Araych | 677 comments Bloody Genius Bloody Genius (Virgil Flowers, #12) by John Sandford by John Sandford

Virgil Flowers #12, OK as a stand-alone. Sandford writes wonderful page-turners, about both Flowers and Lucas Davenport, and I'm a big fan of both series. This one's a little different--Flowers has settled down with his pregnant girlfriend, but the plot hums right alone and the cop-talk still entertains. I really liked this one.

I also really enjoyed this one. I found the previous John Sandford ,Neon Prey, flat and boring.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami by Haruki Murakami

Tsukuru Tazaki is a Japanese man who suffered a psychological blow as a young adult. Later, he goes on a quest to understand his life and find happiness.

I found Tsukuru too passive but Murakami fans would probably love this book. 3 stars

I don’t get emails, but this afternoon there was a three hour gap where there no notifications and I started to panic that all my friends were leaving the platform. They shouldn’t do these things. My heart is 58 years old now. Be kind.

I heard from GR support this morning. It was all just the boilerplate stuff under "if you're not getting emails." Like I wouldn't have read that to begin with!

all systems are nominal today, so that's a good thing.

Araych | 677 comments The Fear Artist The Fear Artist by Timothy Hallinan bt Timothy Hallinan

Poke Rafferty #5, OK as a stand-alone. In this one Rose and Miaow (wife and daughter) are out of town and Poke gets caught up in a struggle with the scariest sadist he's ever encountered. The first half of the book gets 4 stars and then Ming Li gets to town and the action takes off like a rocket. These Raffety thrillers are just great--Hallinan is a very talented writer and knows Thailand very well--he lives there part of the time and has a Thai wife. One small caveat--there's a very graphic torture scene about half-way through the book. Recommend you not read that part while having lunch--I learned this the hard way. Highly recommended-- 5 stars.

On February 28, 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was assassinated in Stockholm. In this book Jan Stocklassa uses the archives of famous journalist and novelist Stieg Larsson (author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) to try to resolve this crime....which has gone unsolved for over thirty years. 🤨

Very good book. 4.5 stars

Thomas (tom471) | 2006 comments I read and enjoyed The Secret Guests by Benjamin Black
The premise of this book is that, at the start of the German bombing blitz of England, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are whisked off to Ireland for their safety. Actually according to her Wikipedia biography, they spent this time at Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle is a formidable Castle. I took a visitor tour in 2016.
I recommend it to historical fiction fans.
Benjamin Black is the pen name of John Banville, who won the Man Booker prize for 1 of his books. My review, 4 stars,

My Lovely Wife is very interesting and well-written.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments The Long Drop The Long Drop by Denise Mina by Denise Mina

"The Long Drop" is a fictionalized story about a real multiple murderer named Peter Manuel - who's known as 'Scotland's First Serial Killer.' He's thought to have murdered 15 people.

It's a good story, but there's a bit too much drunken carousing. 3 stars
