1696 Iceland: religion and Icelandic sagas/witchcraft are central in this book that covers four months in the life of a young woman who follows her newly married husband to his isolated croft. Secrets, isolation, bumps-in-the-night, and a locked loft.
I gave it five-stars. Read it in one day because I couldn’t put it down.

In 1966 Baltimore, a Jewish housewife named Maddie leaves her husband to pursue a career as a journalist. To kickstart her career, Maddie wants to investigate the mysterious death of a young black woman....a story that most newspapers of the time wouldn't publish.
Good literary mystery/historical novel. 4 stars

Slough House #3. Another home run from Mick Herron about the slow horses of Slough House who turn into real tigers. Kidnapping, killings, spies, and lots of underhanded double and triple crosses. 5 stars, highly recommended.

Taking the Fifth by JA Jance: very enjoyable
Maisie Dobbs by J. Winspear: The first of a series, a lot of character explanation, not much mystery.
Cutting Edge by John Harvey: #3. I think I should have read the first two. Choppy writing style.

It is an easier and more enjoyable read than the first three books in this series.

It's being published next month.
Here's my four star review:

it has only just been published Christine. I am looking forward to reading it. S E Lynes is a good author.

Mma Makutski plans her long-awaited wedding to Phuti Radiphuti while Mma Ramotswe handles a difficult case. The book can be read as a standalone, but familiarity with the series is a plus.

oops -- I'm reading The Honjin Murders first, and then The Inugami Clan. Got the series order reversed.

I'm starting a Benny Cooperman mystery next for what might be my last book of 2019... The Cooperman Variations by Howard Engel

It is a depressing tale of a Florida state McCarthy style committee. It is historical fiction, based on a real life committee. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

When a deadly disease breaks out on a damaged American submarine marooned on the Arctic ice, Lieutenant Colonel Joe Rush is sent to deal with the situation before a Chinese sub can reach the scene.
Very good thriller. 3.5 stars

In this medical thriller, hospital patients are being murdered and a surgical resident is being set up to take the blame.

The movie was pretty good too.

I've just finished The Honjin Murders, which turned out to be a pretty good read as far as locked-room/impossible crime mysteries go, with a most ingenious plot. I am going to read it one more time, then move on to The Inugami Clan by the same author.
Locked-room mysteries generally have some pretty outlandish solutions, and this one is no exception.

The movie was better than the book, mostly due to Poitier's performance. But the book was very worthwhile.

I'm just curious Nancy, why are you jumping from #1 in the series to #6?

I don't think the others are translated yet, and I have Inugami Clan here. If I'm still interested, I'll want until spring when I'm in Seattle to find some of the others in Japanese.

Lu, I just finished this book too.
I liked it and thought the ending was bittersweet."
It was, wasn't it? Very emotional and touching story. I really liked it too and was such a quick read.
