The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

I'm getting disgusted with some of the new writers so I decided to go back to a classic. I saw the movie many years ago with Ray Milland and as I was clearing out some of my old books, I came across this one which I have never read!

Oh, that's too bad. Of course, I'm about to start #6, I think. But I like the series.

Heartbroken] by Lisa Unger Okay of a book could be better. Her books are hit and miss with me

The 17th Suspect by James Patterson Maxine Paetro was okay but this series is dying up fast

Trick or Treat Murder by Leslie Meier Okay of a book but the first 2 in the series is better

I love the series as a whole. Absolutely love it. But I started noticing some time ago that as the series went on, it just wasn't the same and that Camilleri's energy seemed to be fading.

Oh Gretchen that stinks that the book had to go back to the library but at least your reading another book and i’m sorry I confused you and Shannon I want to read that book called The 17th Suspect

Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz

In this addition to the 'Orphan X' series, Evan Smoak plans to kill the President of the United States. The book can be read as a standalone but familiarity with the series is a bonus. Good thriller. 3.5 stars

I just finished an Anna Pigeon mystery, set in Rocky Mountain National Park, Hard Truth by Nevada Barr and after that gritty mystery, I'm going to move across the pond to Venice an sample an Inspector Brunetti mystery, Blood from a Stone by Donna Leon.

Some series go too long.

I just finished Flights and Falls I enjoyed it and recommend it. My review 4/5

Sir Robert Carey is as dashing and daring as ever in A Surfeit of Guns, the third in P.F. Chisholm's fun series about the English and Scots battling and thieving in the border country in Elizabethan England. Love it!

I finished my 14th book

Just started a Michael Bennett, detective story. Interesting as it is a little bit Blue Bloods: family life, police work, etc. Bennett is thrown into a new situation which he must take over and improve as his chief is an old friend with "chip on his shoulder". All this makes for an refreshing look at a written mystery book

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith

This is the 4th book in Robert Galbraith's (aka J.K. Rowling) series about grizzled private detective Cormoran Strike - a veteran of the war in Afghanistan who lost his leg during the hostilities, and his former secretary, now partner - pretty, strawberry blonde Robin Ellacott. In this book the duo tackle blackmail and murder. The book can be read as a standalone.

Good mystery. 3.5 stars

Anyway finished The Ivory Grin by Ross Macdonald, another nice noir from one of the best in the business. Rating - 4/5

Thanks Nancy, I just checked your bookshelves seems like you like Chandler a lot too. Excellent taste, he is the best crime writer I have ever read.

Still on Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli & Isles series, I've finished (bad start, better ending), (which was the best of the series so far), which was short but efficient and I'm now beginning to read .

Amos Decker is a private detective with hyperthymesia - a 'photographic memory.' In this story Decker is involved in two cases: the murder of his family a while ago and a recent school shooting. Good mystery. 3.5 stars

Just finished Head Wounds by Chris Knopf
This is, I believe, the 3rd entry in the Sam Acquillo series. It can easily be read as a stand-alone book. This is a very good series about Sam, a (sort-of) working class hero with some real demons. This is not a cozy. I like this series a lot.

Just finished The Murder on the Links. There is some crazysauce in this book.

I'm just getting in to Ross Macdonald, Aditya. I love his work so far. I kind of came to him through his wife, Margaret Millar, who is one of my favorite mystery writers.
