Sandra (sanlema) | 11266 comments It is January 1st morning here and I was thinking about my reading plans for this year, and thought it would be interesting to know what all of you are planning or challenging yourself to read in 2019.
Maybe you have a number of books or pages in mind? or you would like to read more books by female authors / classics / non-fiction, or anything else you are interested in? Finish some series? Get our of your comfort zone in a specific way? Many options come to mind!

Lilisa | 2770 comments Reading as many of the books I shelved in 2013 from around the world. Maybe reading one science fiction book - lol!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11266 comments *Last year I decided on a page goal instead of number of books and it worked fine for me, so in 2019 I am setting again a page goal. I would like to read 15,000 pages, which sounds like a reasonable number at this moment of my life.

*I'd like to read 20% of those pages in Spanish, 10% in Portuguese, and another 10% in French.

*This year I also accomplished my goal of reading more non-fiction (about a 10% of my readings), but I noticed that most of them where biographies/memoirs. Nothing wrong about it but next year I would like to increase the number of non-fiction other than biographies/memoirs I read.

*I want to keep pushing myself to read more books out of my comfort zone. I can easily get lost in the mysteries and historical fiction worlds for ever if I am not careful. In 2018 I read more horror, science fiction, and short stories. I plan to keep that in 2019 and maybe try to read also more fantasy and at least 1 play and 1 poems collection.

*Of course I also expect to get at least 1 badge for the Movie Mania Challenge, and joining as many monthly reads, monthly challenges, topplers and buddy reads is an on going challenge for me. I am not always lucky about this, but I will keep on trying. :)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments My reading targets/plans are:

- Hit my Goodreads target of 40 books for the year.

- Get at least 1 badge for the Movie Mania Challenge.

- Finish the Sevenwaters series.

- Continue on with (and possibly complete) the Realm of the Elderlings.

- Read some of the chunksters on my TBR.

- Reread my favourite book, As Meat Loves Salt, at least once 😉

Agnetta My goals this year will be linked to increasing my knowledge of Italian, German and Buddhism ! so I will be searching out authors I can't read in their original language and read the italian (>6 books) or german (6 books) translation.
The topper would be if on top they write about buddhism (>6 books) !
And will keep focusing on japanese literature too (>12 books) .
All that culminating in 36 minimum books for the whole year ! bring on 2019 !!

message 6: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @ Sandra - 15,000 pages would be 50, 300 page books. That sounds doable. :0)

I have no planned genre goals except to read as many of the books that I already own, for the yearly challenge as I can. I believe three badges worth are doable. I set the number of books that I want to read in 2019 at the same count as I had last year at 130. I went over it by about 60 books, due largely to the number of audiobooks I listened to, mainly for series reads. I have many more chunksters coming up and less series choices in audiobook format.

message 7: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11641 comments I don't have much of a plan for this year. I'm going to read what I fancy, hit as much of the annual challenge as I can and enjoy!

The challenge this year is such that most of the books will fit in one way or another.

I am looking forward to some of the planned buddy reads like i.e. The Farseer Trilogy, The Fifth Season (broken earth series) and some more of China Miéville work.

The new release I am most looking forward to, like many, is Once Upon a River.

Big bookish resolution is BUY LESS BOOKS!

Exactly. I think it is doable. I read around 15,000 along 54 books last year.

Margo | 11641 comments I am very impressed that so many members plan to read in multiple languages!

Cherie, you reading for last year was remarkable! Congrats 😄

message 10: by Peggy (last edited Jan 01, 2019 04:53AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I want to read at least 50 books. I did 53 this year, so that should be doable. Of these 50, 36 should be for the year long challenge, as I aim to go for badge 2.

Other than that, I don't have much planned. Last year I planned to read 4 super-chunksters, of which I read only 1, so I'm not making any big plans this year.

I do want to read more books that were originally written in Dutch, as I hardly ever read Dutch books. I sort of wanted to do that last year too and think I read one, but I have 3 Dutch paperbacks now and want to try to get them all done this year.

Kristie | 19177 comments I call these your New Year's book resolutions. :)

I want to catch up my review books. I started in December and did well, so hopefully over the next couple of months I'll be there.

Next, I want to join less challenges and read more 'just for fun' books. I tend to join too many challenges and book clubs, then I never read books just because I want to, but because I need it for something. Of course, all the books look good, but I always feel like I'm behind. I do still want to try for two badges in the yearly challenge though. :)

I think I'll try to add in a couple of nonfiction books this year as well, probably from the Goodreads choice awards or new releases. I have a few in mind.

Lanelle | 4023 comments Happy 2019 Public Domain Day!

In honor of all the books that are out of copyright as of today, I plan on reading a lot more book on gutenberg.org. Hopefully that wonderful website will have those stories available as soon as possible.

40 of the books I've gophered for the year-long challenge are public domain.

That's impressive! I don't speak any other languages. English and French are Canada's national languages, and although I took French in school, I never learned enough to be fluent.

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59936 comments I put down 100 books for my 2019 Goodreads Challenge. In 2017, I read 131 out of 130. I aimed for 125 in 2018 and didn't make it. I finished 115. Knowing that I have a bunch of chunksters coming up, I thought it best to reduce to 100 in 2019.

I want to read 36 books (badge 1 & 2) for the Movie Mania challenge.

I have 30 books leftover from the Zany Zodiac challenge that will find their way to the leftover stew challenge.

I aim to read 12 new releases in 2019.

As for series, I have 9 that I want to focus on and kill off.

Those are my main goals for 2019.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have set myself the target of 40 books like last year but i'd like to read more as my reading has definitely decreased in recent years.

I want to read more non fiction books, in particular related to my work. I started reading more last year but i want to increase that significantly this year and hope to be able to fit as many as possible in to the yearly challenge. I'm going to buy some notebooks to make notes in about the books i read for a number of reasons. Firstly, i tend to highlight stuff in the books but do nothing with it after and often forget stuff. Writing things down consolidates the information and i'm more likely to remember it. It's all then in one place if i want to refer to it. Making notes has always helped with the fiction books i've read for group and buddy reads so why not for non fiction! But maybe wait until the end to sum it up and makes notes. I also plan to read certain chapters in some of my work related reference books about specific topics of interest although that won't count towards my book count unfortunately.

I would like to try to finish off some of the series I've got on the go, always something i plan to do each year. Doesn't always go according to plan. I've not thought too much on which ones to focus on. I'll be working on the Broken Earth series with the buddy read for a start and i'd like to read The Republic of Thieves to finish off that series (for now). I'll leave it there for now.

I am going to plan my reading less this year i think so i don't feel under pressure. Just slotting things in where i can. I want to aim for one fiction, one non fiction audio, and one non fiction print for starters and then fit in others if i have the time.

I think that's me done for book resolutions.

message 16: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59936 comments Sarah, I really like the idea of getting a notebook and making notes on the books you've read. I jot things down when I'm in a buddy read, but I don't formalize them. I end up with disembodied sentences that mean nothing to anyone (least of all me). I'll find notes and wonder what book I was reading.

I really wish the 4th book in the Gentlemen Bastards series had a publication date. I think Scott Lynch had gone through some medical issues and it's up in the air as to when it will be published. I may have to reread the series (oh the hardship) if it ever gets published.

Good news, though, Robert McCammom will be publishing the next in the Matthew Corbett series this year! Yeah!

message 17: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes that is what I heard Janice. It's a great series and I hope he will continue to write and publish books. And I need to start the Matthew Corbett series. Maybe this year!

Kristie | 19177 comments I forgot to add that I’d also like to finish up a few series. I finished a few in 2018, but they will have orphans published this year, so I hope to read those as well.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11266 comments And then I write "our" instead of "hours"... Jeez... I'm hopeless. :D

message 22: by Dorottya (new)

Dorottya (dorottya_b) | 35 comments Physical TBR takedown. The situation was getting out of hand - 100+ unread physical books. I had to change my reading habits / challenge tendencies (I tend to overburden myself with the nr.s. and then read shorter ebooks or listen to audiobooks to reach the nr.s... now I set a lower nr., but told myself that 75% of the books I read this year have to come from my physical TBR).

message 23: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19177 comments Good plan, Dorottya. I need to do that at some point too.
