I understand how you feel about this book but I can't encourage you enough to give the series another try. I was confused too with the first book and I admit to not understanding the fuss over the Charlie Parker series. But so many folks told me to at least try the second book before giving up. I did and I'm happy to say I'm up to #11 in the series and loving every minute of them.
If you read the second book and still don't like it throw in the towel but please give it a try. I wouldn't tell you how good this series gets if I didn't really love it. :)

I am addicted to these--I buy them as soon as they're out, and "try" to only let myself read a few a year--I don't want them to end!

That's the same reaction I had to Bentley Little with the book I tried from him even though I have heard people rave about his other stories.

Okay, I will. I typically don't continue a series if I can't get into it after book one but if the second book is better then it's probably worth a shot.

This series gets better and better. The first one is really dark-they do lighten up a bit. Also the surrounding characters become more and more developed over time. Right now, aside from the Robert McCammon Matthew Corbett series? John Connolly's series is my favorite thing going. I believe we're up to 16 or 18 books?

Last night I finished up The Day of The New Gods by Luke Walker. It's a prequel to his novella Mirror of the Nameless. What an imagination! I had a blast with it.

That's my reaction to them too. I so want to just plow through each and every book but then I wouldn't have any to look forward to so I try to pace myself. Connolly is one of the very best writers ever!

Me too. I have the next Corbett book pre-ordered and will devour every page the minute it arrives.
And I have #16 in the Parker series ordered and on the way.

Angel and Louis alone make the series worth reading but all the characters are good. I love the seires so much I'm excited to get others reading it too.

John Connolly's series is absolutely one of my favorites. I really liked the first book, but by book 3 I was absolutely in love with the series. There were one or two in the middle that paled compared to the rest, but otherwise the series has been fantastic. I'm a couple books behind now. Gotta remedy that.
I believe the only non-CP or young adult book he has written is Bad Men, which is good, but not as good as the CP series.

I read one of his YA books, and it was decent. If you like the CP books, you'll probably like Bad Men. But I think his best writing is his established the series.

I think The Book of Lost Things and The Gates might be YA books, it's been a while.

If you enjoyed NOS4A2, you might also enjoy Wraith. It's a graphic novel which tells more about Christmasland, Charlie Manx and the Wraith.

I finished The Wolf and the Watchman and thought it was very good-a super dark, historical fiction novel that was often gruesome. Loved it!

I finished YOU a couple of days ago and really liked it. I felt the way it was written made it very realistic.

I finished Lord of the Dead by Tom Holland the other day. I wish I had read this sooner - I’ve had the pb for awhile and it just fell by the way side. It was difficult to put down. Loved it and I’ll definitely read it again.

A Winter Haunting


I liked it well enough, I guess. I don't know what it is about Dan Simmons. Aside from The Terror and Summer's Night, I have tried several of his other books and I either don't like them or feel sort of indifferent after reading them. I will read book 2 in this series, though.

Just finshed C.J. Tudor's new one The Hiding Place.


I liked it much better than The Chalk Man (which I did enjoy). I think the writing on this one noticeably improved. My only real issues were too many really unlikable characters, and though there wer some shocking twists, in the end a couple of them were a little "ehh". But otherwise this was great anticipation building thriller with a creepy horror element.

I just finished the twelve by Justin Cronin.

I finished Don Winslow's The Border and it was phenomenal.

Started and finished . It was dark but good in some way. Sad too.

I feel the same way about Simmons work. The two books you mentioned are by far the best he's written. I like Ilium and Olympos too but that series is very long winded.

I've only read Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons and I consider them masterpieces.

Those were the books that got me hooked on Simmons.

Ink and Bone


Lisa Unger seems to be in the category where I've tried some of her books but haven't been blown away by any of them (so far). Like Dan Simmons and Ruth Ware, I like her style of writing but the plots just don't grip me. Anyone have any recommendations for her?
