Kandice | 4387 comments For anyone thanking of watching the movie on Netflix, I suggest you read the book first. They're both good, but I think reading first will enhance your viewing.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 61 comments Thanks for that Kandice. That's the plan! I have had a copy of the book for well over a year now and Netflix keeps pushing me to watch the movie (must think I like watching horror movies or something :))

Bethany (bethany74) | 2 comments I saw the movie last week but wouldn't mind reading the book. If I'd known about the book I would have read it 1st.

Erin (ems84) | 2661 comments I thought the book was great and the movie just as good. I read the movie supposedly received 45 million views in it's first week of release.

José Carlos (under_me) | 6 comments Wow, 45 million views is impresive. I feel i'll enjoy this book a lot.

Greg (popzeus) Just finished the book and will be watching the movie this weekend. Was really impressed with the book and am interested to see how they have adapted it for the screen.

Nicerottie | 3 comments Am I the only one that didn’t care for this book? I felt like I kept waiting for something to happen that never did. I don’t have Netflix so I didn’t see the movie, was it any better?

Greg (popzeus) Just finished the film and thought it significantly dumbed down the book. What was really interesting in the book (the house, characters, their relationships etc..) was pretty dull on screen. Maybe it wasn’t ideal to watch so soon after finishing the book.

I tend to agree with you. I also didn't care for how they changed quite a bit from the book, but that always seems to happen. 🤷‍♀️

Andre Z (andre94) I watched the movie recently as well, and found out about the book shortly after. Hoping to read it really soon! As for the movie, I found that the people around me didn't really like it, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Lauren | 6 comments I recently watched the movie just to see if it was as bad as a lot of people have reviewed it to be. I wasn't too disappointed with it. Most people's complaints were that it dragged, but I thought since it hopped between timelines it wasn't too draggy. I do want to read the book, though, to get a better sense of the characters.

I agree with you. I didn't care too much for the book, but the movie was even worse in my opinion. I didn't care for any of the characters other than maybe Tom. MAYBE.

I lowkey hated the book and highkey hated the movie, so I'm with you. I felt like on one hand the villain concept was creative and I'd never seen it done before, but then on the other hand it really was a cop-out. I think the only overtly good thing about it was the suspense. He did write suspense very well in my opinion, and I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of the book.

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 107 comments Saw the movie last night, got over 25% through the book last night.

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 107 comments So are the creatures demons or a virus? I thought I read it was a virus but my daughters boyfriend said it was demons. What are your opinions?

message 17: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin (ems84) | 2661 comments Demons might be the best way to describe them. These creatures are definitely some sort of entity, or at least they seem to be. I guess you could argue the virus angle since we technically never see them.

José Carlos (under_me) | 6 comments Well I have to say that I can't believe how annoying Malorie was. I kind of hate her, but other than that the story was very good and totally catchy. Once you get through the first half, is impossible to put down the book. Now I'll watch the movie!

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 107 comments Malorie, annoying? How?

Kandice | 4387 comments I agree that Malorie is irritating, especially in the first half. She is a cold fish and has no personality, but when you get to the second half and see how determined and strong she is, you can set aside your dislike for admiration. At least I could.

I felt the same way. I was really disappointed in how little a role the children played in the movie. The book was fantastic and I loved how crucial the children were to their survival and how well she had them "trained." Honestly I didn't care for the movie and it was a pretty big disappointment.
