This thread is for nominations for THEMED category for February 2019.

THEMED books need to be currently in print on at least one platform, and fit the theme for the month. If there is no spaceship involved, then it must take place on another planet with a technological society. If it is part of a series, it needs to be suitable to being read without having read other books in the series. Frequently books in this category will be those from major publishers that are no longer in print as paperback (or haven't yet made it to paperback), but Kindle Exclusive books are allowed too. It is perfectly fine to nominate a book here that would qualify for one of our other categories.

CURRENT THEME: Pirates (or Organized Crime). At least one key plot point must include the main characters being attacked by pirates or attempting to rescue someone else from pirates. See this thread for ideas:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

RULES:
* you may nominate one book on this thread.
* you may second as many nominations as you like on this thread.
* it is okay to nominate the same book on more than one nomination thread, as long as it meets the criteria
* don't nominate a book we already have on our bookshelf
* If a book you nominate or second is selected, you are expected to post at least one comment about it on the thread about the book.
* In about two weeks I will draw a book randomly, with each second being one raffle ticket for the book. That is, a book with three seconds (so four of us want it) will get three chances in the pool.

It is likely helpful if you know something about a book that has been nominated if you mention it in this thread, whether it is for or against the book.

My nomination is Take the Star Road (The Maxwell Saga, #1) by Peter Grant Take the Star Road by Peter Grant. Most of the story takes place on ships. There’s a great section where they are attacked by pirates, and boarded. I’ve reread this series several times and will be ready to reread it again in February if not sooner. I don’t recall any aliens, just multiple human nations, on lots of planets.

Jemima Pett | 167 comments I'll nominate Star Nomad (Fallen Empire, #1) by Lindsay Buroker Star Nomad by Lindsay Buroker, which I remember fondly (and must read the next in the series)

I'm fairly sure they have a run-in with pirates, and by the end I think they could be classed as pirates themselves... I must reread it!

message 4: by Audrey (new)

Audrey | 519 comments I nominate Neptune's Brood by Charles Stross. It is the second book in the series, but takes place thousands of years after the first book so can be read without the first.

message 5: by Laz (new)

Laz the Sailor (laz7) | 216 comments Hmm, not a lot of selections that involve pirates that aren't also smutty. See my shelves if you're interested in the latter.

I'm not directly nominating this series, but adding it to the list for discussion.

Just a reminder that if no book gets seconded, we just won’t have a Pick for this category next month.

message 9: by TJ (new)

TJ (oporto) | 3 comments Star Nomad is great fun. My pleasure to second it.

This doesn’t count as a second: the ebook edition of Star Nomad is free on Amazon. I tried it quite a while back but it didn’t hold my interest enough to even add it to my gave-up-on shelf. But then I’m picky, and a book that fails to interest me at time T might be fun for me at time T+3.

If there are no further seconds, our pick for this category will be Star Nomad.

Paul Hudson | 6 comments I nominate "The Gap Into Conflict: The Real Story" by Stephen R Donaldson. Dark as it gets for space opera but oh what a series!
