We are having another Series Madness Challenge.

We are reading from 1 January 2019 until 31 December 2019.

All books read during this period will count towards the challenge.

There are no tasks to complete but points will be gathered. You gather points by reading books that are a part of a series. For every book that is first in a series you will get one point, for every book that is second you will get two points etc. If a series like Discworld has 40 books you can get 40 points for the last book in the series.

The catch is that you have to read the books in order. If you first read book 3 and then book 6 and then book 1 you will not get full points. For every book read out of order you will get one point.

You don't have to read all the books during the challenge. So if you have already read books 1-5 in a series last year or before and read book 6 in 2015 you will get 6 points as long as you have read them.

Series filler books also count (e.g. Book 1.5 in a series) as long as they are 150 pages or more. Each series filler book gets points that are the same as its position in the series (e.g. Book 3.5 counts for 3.5 points) However, they need to be read in order of the series. Any filler books that are read out of sequence count for only 1 point. Please note: Reading filler books is optional, they will not affect the main sequence of books in a series, so if you read book 4 but move on to book 5 instead of reading book 4.5, you will still get the 5 points.

✨ A ✨ (az_youread) Question: does a book count if the sequel is not yet published but will be later this year or next year?

eg. The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang - It's sequel ( The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War, #2) by R.F. Kuang ) is coming out in May.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer - it's sequel ( A Heart So Fierce and Broken (A Curse So Dark and Lonely, #2) by Brigid Kemmerer ) is releasing next year

Yes, it does. I think as long as Goodreads shows it as part of a series it should work.

Stephen Hayes (hayesstw) I've read The Green Mile. Part1, The Green Mile. Part 2, The Green Mile. Part 3, and The Green Mile. Part 4.

I'm currently reading Part 5, but just realised that the library doesn't have p[art 6, so I won't be able to finish it.

What's the stance on graphic novels? Would the volume number count? I know counting individual issues wouldn't work, but a collected volume is closer to what I'd view as a a book.

So would Saga, Vol. 1, Saga, Vol. 2 and Saga, Vol. 3 count as 6?

Excellent question!
I think they should count - as long as they make the required 150pg count.

...just my two cents :P

Saga does meet the count as far as I can tell. Most others will fall a bit short as the average number of pages for trades is around 144.

Do re-reads count? I read Hogfather and that's book 20 in the Discworld, but it was a re-read. I read the entire Discworld series in 2012.

message 18: by Jax (new)

It counts as 1 point, as you didn't re-read the entire series; so it was read "out of order". (At least, that's how I understand it).

Felt ambiguous to me since I did read all the prior books already.

But I'm fine with that and it makes more sense that way too. Otherwise people could just re-read the last book in a 40 book series to rack up points. Will rectify my score to 1.

We might want to add a clarification note to the challenge though:

Re-reads count as 1 point, unless you are re-reading the entire series in sequence.
