Veronica (veraj121) ALL ABOUT UNO

◈ This is a 3 month team challenge starting 1 February 2019

◈ At the end of the challenge 30 April 2019 the team with the most points wins!

◈ At the start of each month each team is given a minimum 13 hands of 7 "UNO" cards

◈ The idea is to "play" each hand for points. It is up to the team how many "hands" they can get through in the month, but they must play one hand completely before being able to get points for the next

Camilla | 1251 comments I took a quick look at our first hands. Four reverses, which is not too bad. We got two blues, one green and four yucky yellows. So if any of you want to start planning, finding a yellow cover would be great.

message 23: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) Welcome everyone. This seems like a very lively and enthusiastic group. I love a lot of interaction. We a few more days before the challenge start. I am anxious to start LOL

I love, love, love to read. Also it is frigid in NYC, 24 degrees but feels like 10 degrees. And I have to make a trek to Westchester. Wish me luck..

Poongothai, I notice we are in couple groups together.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 24 comments Well it's not much warmer in Southern Illinois...supposedly due to warm up some today with rain in the forecast & by Monday due to be in the high 40s oh but wait the bottom falls out & we are back in the single digits with wind chill - have no idea because my brain does not compute negative numbers....I HATE WINTER!!! im ready for my 80-90 degree days soon!!!!

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 24 comments just looking over my books - I have one that will fit YELLOW cover & Im making a library run later today so I will scour the shelves to see what I may find....

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 24 comments I just finished Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens ...I do not hand out 5 stars to very many books - it really has to wow me to get me there & this book was amazing. I loved it. I hope that I will find a copy of the book at a library sale or as close to a discount I can find without having to pay full price but it is definitely worth the time to read.

Sha | 324 comments A 6 Yellow book would have to qualify for both Yellow Cover and a 6 Card, yes?

... also, how yellow does a cover have to be for it to be yellow?

message 29: by Sha (new)

Sha | 324 comments Okay; genres might be a problem (a lot of my shelf is SFF or Romance) but here are a few recs for the yellows;

1. The Cloud Roads (Books of the Raksura, #1) by Martha Wells . One of the main characters is named Stone. So 6 Yellow.
2. Castle in the Air (Howl's Moving Castle, #2) by Diana Wynne Jones . 2nd book in a series (It still can be read as a standalone). 2-Yellow?
3. The Governess Game (Girl Meets Duke, #2) by Tessa Dare . Same as the last one. 2-Yellow?
4. The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra (Baby Ganesh Agency Investigation #1) by Vaseem Khan . Possibly a 7-yellow? Future references?
5. Anyone But You by Jennifer Crusie . 0-Yellow? Standalone.
6. The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James . 6-Yellow (Authors Name starts with S). 0-Yellow (Standalone).

message 30: by Sha (new)

Sha | 324 comments Also, are the hands supposed to be completed in order? Hand 1 first and then hand 2 and so on?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm still trying to find my uno legs.

message 31: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments Sha wrote: "A 6 Yellow book would have to qualify for both Yellow Cover and a 6 Card, yes?"

Correct.

... also, how yellow does a cover have to be for it to be yellow?"

Well, it's not actually mentioned - or at least I couldn't find it - in the current rules, but if I remember correctly, >50%. Veronica, can you confirm this?

Does everybody know how to use TinEye?

message 32: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments Sha wrote: "Also, are the hands supposed to be completed in order? Hand 1 first and then hand 2 and so on?

We don't need to read exactly in order, but we will get points only for completed hands plus the books in the next uncompleted hand. I.e. we must play one hand completely before being able to get points for the next.

No need to apologise, this may seem a bit chaotic at first, but once we get going, it will be much clearer.

message 33: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments Sha wrote: "Okay; genres might be a problem (a lot of my shelf is SFF or Romance) but here are a few recs for the yellows;"

I checked the books you recommended and the covers have yellow:
1. Only 21.7% yellow, will not work
2. 23.9%, will not work
3. No yellow at all, will not work
4. Only 0.4% yellow, will not work
5. 68.2%, this one works
6. 57.4% yellow, this one works as well

message 34: by Komal (new)

Komal (komalm) | 163 comments Camilla wrote: "Sha wrote: "A 6 Yellow book would have to qualify for both Yellow Cover and a 6 Card, yes?"

Looks like Camilla was able to figure out how Tineye works. Well, for the benefits of others, here is the link : https://labs.tineye.com/color/

This is what I do : On a book page on GR, I click "Enlarge Cover", then right click the image and click "Copy image address". Then on Tineye page, paste that URL on the "Enter Image URL" textfield and press "Extract color" button. Bingo! This gets me the color extracts of the book cover with highest percentages on top.

This way I decide if a book cover is yellow-heavy or not and read it for Yellow card.

message 35: by Sha (new)

Sha | 324 comments Thanks for the updates. :) I'll use tineye before I give any more recs.

Camilla | 1251 comments Komal wrote: "Looks like Camilla was able to figure out how Tineye works."

LOL, I've been using it for ages, so I didn't exactly figure it out now.

One addition to the instructions Komal posted: remember to removed the tag from "Exclude background color from extracted colors", otherwise the result will be erroneous, i.e. not take into account the background color.
