Grotesk
question
What is Mitsuru's role in Grotesque?

I've read the book and wonder why Mitsuru was there.. her role did not seem to create much value for the whole story line and also her very weird development after school seems placed weird to me. Was she just a "helper" for the auhtor, e.g. to provide the diaries later?
Of course she also made her way "down", still I am wondering for other views.

I'm pretty sure Mitsuru formed the comparative trio along with Kazue and Yuriko (plus the narrator, if you think about it too).
Each girl arms themselves with their own "weapon" to survive in modern-day Japan: Kazue with her double-identity, Yuriko with her monstrous beauty, the narrator with her spite for everyone else, and then Mitsuru with her sharp wit and intelligence. I do agree that her development after Q High was weird though; couldn't make any sense of it there.
