Ruth | 1779 comments Just started the audiobook of this today and as is usual for me I was listening while out and about doing chores.
Except... oh boy that opening does not pull any punches, does it?
Several times I had to turn it off before I started ugly crying in the bank. Or Boots*. Or on the bus.
I think MRK’s audio performance makes it feel even more real because it’s easy to imagine that it’s actually Elma herself telling you the story. The part where she talks about going to the synagogue to start the mourning process... just rip my heart out why don’t you it’d hurt less.
I finished my day’s listening with the end of chapter 7, when Elma says she thinks (view spoiler). This didn’t make me feel like the rest of the book is gonna be a whole lot more cheerful.
Anyway I don’t have much to add to this except that I’m glad y’all are here to SHARE MY PAIN

Mark (markmtz) | 2822 comments The emotional moments of TCS hit pretty hard when reading. I can image that they are amplified when listening to a good audio performance. Nevertheless, when I got to the end of the book, I felt hopeful. Let us now how you feel when you finish.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Huh, I liked the opening, but I didn't feel that emotionally involved...until I saw Elma's anxiety kick in.

That said, for me, The Fated Sky has made me ugly cry a few times (I think I'm about halfway through?).

Elizabeth Morgan (elzbethmrgn) | 303 comments Yeah, I started reading it at bedtime and immediately made the comment that this is not a book to start reading at bedtime!

Scott | 312 comments The opening didn’t really get to me as much as all the aftermath. Elma having to buy clothes and breaking down, and the scenes of her having to tend to the other refugees.

Man, not sure I can keep up with the series then...

Good thing it is so well written

Ruth | 1779 comments Got a bit further into the audio book now and I’m not ugly crying quite so much...

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments The beginning certainly had an emotional impact, but I'm weird and only spilled tears during the happier parts. I sobbed on the bus this morning. I love this book.

Yeah, I now find myself tearing up whenever she mentions how she's inspiring little girls to form 'lady astronaut' clubs and wear home-made astronaut helmets.
excuse me I have something in my eye...

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Oh my goodness, but now I'm reading the second book, and... Does someone know how to get in touch with Elma because I'd really like to give that lady a hug?
