The Labyrinth Challenge

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from March 1st 2019 to March 31st 2019. Results will be announced on April 1st 2019.

To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book.
You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺

Link to descriptions (without pictures etc) - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

How it works:

The idea of this challenge is to read books to complete the descriptions, and in doing so to make your way through the Labyrinth to rescue Toby.

The Labyrinth is split into 7 parts, and each part contains 10 descriptions. Completing all the descriptions in a part will earn your team bonus points. And completing all 7 parts will complete the Labyrinth and also earn your team bonus points.

Once you have completed the Labyrinth, your team may begin the Labyrinth again.

(You can also earn some bonus points while completing descriptions, by following the extra directions on certain descriptions.)

Rules/Guidelines:

* Books must be read between the 1st of March and the 31st of March inclusive.

* Books started before March may only be used to earn points for pages read in March, and cannot be used to complete any descriptions. We will also only give points on a maximum of 3 books started before March per person.

* Books must be over 100 pages long, without illustrations/photographs etc.
-- 150 pages minimum for middle-grade books.
-- 300 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.

* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 150 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, City of Ghosts, and The Secret Garden to name a few.

* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 300 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, books by Roald Dahl, Doll Bones, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and Charlotte's Web to name a few.

* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 300 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.

* If your poetry book or graphic novel does not meet the minimum page count, we will allow you to add together the page counts of 2 or more books to make it to the minimum page count. Books will both have to match the same description though, and must be posted at the same time.

* If you are reading novellas which are less than 100 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 100 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 100 pages. Books will both have to match the same description though, and must be posted at the same time.

* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to either Abbie or myself.

* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to either myself or Abbie via personal message. Please let us know that you will be doing this before you do it though, and please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, and stating 'review sent to Sarah/Abbie by personal message' after 'Review:'.

* Re-reads are allowed as long as it has been at least a year since you last read the book, and you write a new review or updates. We recommend that you post on your review '2019 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.

*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.

*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book.

* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points.

* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.

* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

* Please be aware that we may not give you points for your buddy read if you repeatedly post updates on a buddy read thread, without ever trying to discuss the book with your buddy. We understand if a buddy doesn't show up, but if your buddy is present and you haven't bothered to even reply to one of their updates, then we may disallow your buddy read points.

* There are no set books which need to be read, any book matching the description will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.

* You will only receive points for each book once, even if it fits multiple descriptions.

* You must use your book's original title for this challenge, other titles may not be used. This means that some books cannot be used if their original title is spelt using non-English letters.

* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions, or 'flipback' or dwarsligger editions (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We also request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using, if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.

* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.

* We are happy to move books around for you, within reason. We really can't move books from one run through of Labyrinth to another (that means once you have completed all 70 descriptions those books cannot be moved). We also won't move books if your movement involves moving more than 4 books at once, as this really slows down the scoring process.

* To request a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, include links to the original post for each book being moved, and let us know which description a book is moving from and to. The clearer your request is, the quicker we will be able to help you. Please do not go back and edit posts, and please bear in mind that if you move a book from a completed part and don't replace it with another book, then you will open that part again, and lose your bonus points.

* We will be tracking the number of books that people are reading, to see whether they are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that they are on. If over a period of several months you are consistently reading less than the required number of books, we will ask you to move to a lower level of team, or go solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium team, yet are only reading 2 books a month.

* For descriptions which ask you to read a book with a title starting with a specific letter, the title must start with that specific letter 'A' or 'The' cannot be skipped.

* For descriptions where you are asked for specific letters in a title/author's name , eg: 'N', 'E', 'E', and 'D', letters can be in any order as long as all 4 appear at least once in the books title or author's name.

* For descriptions where you are asked for a specific word in a title eg: 'dark', the letters must appear in the title in the correct order. It is okay to use words which contain the word though, such as 'darkness', or 'darkly'.

* For descriptions where you are asked for a specific word or for specific letters, the word or letters must appear in the title of the book, not including the series name, and not including any subheadings.

* For descriptions where you are asked for words or letters in an author's name, you may use the names of any author of that book, as long as it is an author, and not an editor, illustrator, translator, narrator etc.

* If you are asked to find a book 'shelved' or 'tagged' with a particular word, then the book must have been tagged at least twice to count. (Tags can be found under the 'Genres' heading on the right hand side of your chosen book's Goodreads page. Clicking on 'See top shelves...' will allow you to see all the tags for a particular book.)

* If you are asked to read a book with a particular character name (such as 'starting with the letter H'), it must be one of the main characters, and ideally the name needs to appear in either the blurb or the 'characters' section of the books Goodreads page (or in at least 2 other people's reviews of that book). We will not accept the book if we feel that the character you have chosen is not a main character.

* Bonus points are available for some descriptions. Please let us know when posting your review if you think you have completed the requirements for bonus points. If for any reason we can't give you the bonus points, we will let you know when we do the scores for your team.

* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to either myself or Abbie.***

* Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score for pages, so a 300 page book + buddy read = 6 points. 600 page book + buddy read = 12 points. (Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)

* 10 bonus points will be awarded each time all 10 descriptions in a part are completed.

* 25 bonus points will be awarded each time you complete all 7 parts and complete the Labyrinth.

(Bonus points for completing all 10 descriptions within a part, and bonus points for completing the Labyrinth, will only be applied to team scores, not individual scores.)

*Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -

Team Name:

__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|_Points|

Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Completion Bonus_________________________________+00

Team______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|___0___|_____0

Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. This is to allow us to see whether you are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that you have requested to be on. You will receive a '1' for every book over 100 pages long, or for every 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry etc, that you have read.

Answered Questions:

* Can each task only be completed once, and each task in each part has to be completed before we are able to move to the next part?

- Each task can only be completed once, unless you complete all 70 and then you can start over.
All 70 descriptions are available to use from the start though , you don't have to complete part 1 to move on to part 2 for example ☺️

*So we have to complete each part in order? Like if the team completes part 1 we can move on to 2? Or not?

- all 70 descriptions are available from the beginning, you don't have to complete one part to move on to the next, so you could complete description 67 first, followed by number 6, followed by 53, and so on ☺

* What is goodreads time?(referring to task 10)"

Goodreads time is Pacific Standard Time. You can check it here - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo...

* Each task can only be completed once unless starting over.
-Does that mean by one person on the team?
-Or does everyone on the team have to complete each task?

- Each description is completed by reading one book which fits that description, so only one person needs to read one book (except for the description where you have to read 3) to complete that description.

* Tasks can be completed out of order?
-Does this include tasks that are in the same part as well as
tasks that are of different parts?

- Tasks can be completed in any order, even within a part, so you could do number 6, then number 47, then 63, then back to number 2, and so on.

* Is there a challenge that was "story Mode" like this before that I can refer back to and maybe see how a team completed it?

Sure, this challenge is similar to our Jumanji Challenge -
June 2015 - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
May 2017 - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

* Do you have to even go with the "story mode" or can you just read books and get points that way?

- You can only earn points in this challenge by completing descriptions, books which don't complete descriptions will not be counted ☹

* I also don't know where to check Goodreads time.

- Goodreads time is Pacific Standard Time, you can check it here - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo...

* I checked the goodreads time compared to mine and I'm 10 hours ahead. Does this mean that only books I start on March 1st goodreads time will count?

- No, you can still start and end on your timezone, it's just that for the one description where you need to have a review posted by 13:00, it needs to be posted by 13:00 Goodreads time. If you are ahead of Goodreads time it just means that you will have extra time to read your book ☺

* When the bonuses say "instead" just confirming that this means we can ignore the prompt and just do the bonus to complete the task?
Such as (+5 bonus points if instead, you read a book in less than 9 hours and 23 minutes, (please remember to update on Goodreads when you start and when you finish, for your book to count).) We can read any book (not 923 pages) and still get full task credit with bonus pts?

- Correct ☺ If it says 'instead' then you can just do what the bonus bit asks you to do. So for your example, as long as you read a book which is over 100 pages long (or more pages for different types of book as rules state), and you read it within the given timeframe, you don't need to read 923 pages ☺

* Sorry if this was answered somewhere and I missed it, but can we use words found after a ":"? For example: Operation Zulu Redemption: Collateral Damage - Part 1 for LATE in title (Collateral)

- I'm afraid that any words after a ':' would be classified as a subheading, so we wouldn't be able to count them.

* For the bonus on Part 1 task 2, does the word Late have to stand on it's own or can it be part of another word, just in order? Such as LATEr, chocoLATE, etc.

- We will count it if the word is in there as part of another word, as long as the word occurs in its entirety ☺

* Would Don't You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane count for 63? The letters are covered in the title and author's name. For the bonus, does it have to be in one or the other?

That one is fine ☺ You can use both the title and the author's name for that one ☺

*Just to check-would Wither by Lauren DeStefano count as a big white ball gown on the cover?"

I looked through the editions, but in most of them it looks like the skirt is green or yellow, and the top always looks darker. I did find one edition with a girl in a white dress, but that didn't look like a ballgown, so I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to count it.

We're looking for something more like this -
The One (The Selection, #3) by Kiera CassGarden Spells (Waverley Family, #1) by Sarah Addison AllenDragonswood (Wilde Island Chronicles, #2) by Janet Lee CareyEnvy (Luxe, #3) by Anna GodbersenViscount Breckenridge to the Rescue (Cynster, #16; The Cynster Sisters Trilogy, #1) by Stephanie Laurens

*Just to clarify the, does "in the title or author's name" include the letters of both the title and the author's name? The 'or' is kinda ambiguous.

You can use both the title and the author's name. The problem is that if I use the word 'and' instead of 'or', people think that the letters have to occur in both title and author's name, so like if the letters were F I X, people would think that all three would have to be in the title, and then all three again in the author's name.

*Would Illuminae be counted as 1 point per 300 pages? Its text density is less than usual because of the formatting but like the pages are really huge.

Illuminae is currently counted as a regular book with 1 point per 100 pages.

* For 13, would a character known only as Six of Hearts count as having a first/last name starting with H? (I know this is reaching a bit but I thought I'd ask just in case)

I'm afraid we wouldn't count that as having a name (first or last) starting with the letter H, no ☹

* If a prompt asked for a word like ‘up’ or ‘stranger’ would words like ‘uprooted’ or ‘strangers’ work?

Yes, it's in the rules on the first page ☺

* For descriptions where you are asked for a specific word in a title eg: 'dark', the letters must appear in the title in the correct order. It is okay to use words which contain the word though, such as 'darkness', or 'darkly'.

*if one person reads a book for a prompt can some else I'm the team read that same book if it also fits the description of another prompt?

It's fine for two members of the same team to read the same book and use it for different descriptions, as long as it fits both descriptions. It's also an opportunity to get some extra buddy read points for your team ☺

* * You must use your book's original title for this challenge, other titles may not be used. This means that some books cannot be used if their original title is spelt using non-English letters.

Is this the normal not being allowed to use like 'כס הזכוכית (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas' or is it also 'Glasstronen (Glasstronen #1) by Sarah J. Maas'

- You have to use the original title, not other titles, like the Wheel of Fortune Challenge. This is partly because it can be darn difficult to work out what letters are non-English letters, and partly so you don't have to go through 2000 editions of Harry Potter to find one with different letters in it. With regards to books which were originally written in something other than English, you have to use the original title, such as Ruby Red, or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, those would also only count for their original titles - Rubinrot, and Män som hatar kvinnor. Thus, if your book was originally written in Chinese, you wouldn't be able to use it due to the non-English letters.

* Manga don't count for categories right? O.o

- Manga can be used to cross of categories as long as they meet the minimum page count.

* I wonder if this effect covers too? Like only original covers?

- You can use any cover ☺

* And can we still use any edition for page count or is that going to be original edition too?

- Page counts can be done as usual ☺

* So for: 33. Sarah finds some little goblins torturing a big beast, and throws rocks to try and get them away from him.
- We must find the right size rocks! 3 books with 200 - 300 pages should do it. (These don't have to all be read by the same person.)

It is three books totaling those pages? And if so I am guessing novella's are okay?

- It's 3 books, which each have 200-300 pages, so you'd be looking at 600-900 pages total ☺

*For bonus tasks can you do either or for them all. So like for #1 can you do amnesia or can't remember. Or do you have to do both?

It depends on the description.

For number 1, it has to be a book in which someone suffers from amnesia, and it has to have 'can't remember' in the blurb to get the bonus points.

But for number 2, if you're going for the bonus points, then you have to have the word 'late' in the title, but you don't also have to have the letters L A T E.

And for number 20, if you're reading a book in less than 9 hours and 23 minutes, it doesn't also need to have 923 pages.

*Do adopted children count for 53. Read a book in which the main character has one or more children?

- Yes, that's fine ☺

*IsLäsarna i Broken Wheel rekommenderar considered English letters? Same with other titles that use Diacritic letters. Not sure if those titles count.

- If it's a letter with accents, which if we wanted to we could easily substitute with an English letter - so like the ä is identifiable as an 'a', or è is identifiable as an 'e' then there shouldn't be a problem. It's when we get letters that we couldn't easily switch, like л, where we wouldn't be able to accept that book.

*for page requirement books (like the one I asked earlier), do we based those requirements off pages counts off the original edition, the edition we read or the highest edition we are claiming for points?

- For page counts, we are doing page counts as usual, so you are welcome to post the highest page count, with regard to the usual rules regarding that.

For descriptions where books have to be a certain length, then if you want to post a lower page count than the max (thus sacrificing points in order to complete a description), then that is up to you. Just be sure to post the link to the page count you want to use when you post your review ☺

*Sarah, for the prompt with the object you can throw on the cover would What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli work?

-If you want to throw a box, or a bag, or a shoe, that's fine ☺

*For: 25. Read a book that a teammate has given up. (Solo players can ask another solo player for ideas, or read something tagged 'Given-up'.)

If a teammate gave up on book one in a series, could someone else read a later book in that series or does it have to be the same book??

- You can read a later book in the series, just be sure to let us know which teammate gave up which book when you post your review ☺

*Does it have to be the same person reading the 923 pages (if split into more than one book) ??

- If you want to split it between more than 1 person that's fine ☺

* How will number 10 work on round 2?

- You just have to read a book with 13 letters in the title as there is no way for you to complete the bonus task, it's basically a 13 hour bonus opportunity only.

Answered Questions -

* Hypothetically speaking your group has decided to random.org the description numbers and are now each assigned their numbers... Well Persons A, B, and C have finished "their" numbers and Persons D, E, and F aren't quite there but have everything planned and are on track to complete theirs...

Can we move to round 2 and start doing round 2 tasks before round 1 is all completed? That way D, E, and F aren't stressing about trying to cram theirs in and keep up so others can move forward. I just don't want anyone to feel rushed if they don't want to be.

- in that situation people A, B, and C could start reading for round 2, but wouldn't be able to post any reviews on the team review thread until people D, E, and F have posted their reviews to complete the first run through.

*Does Invisibly Breathing by Eileen Merriman count as a couple facing each other on the cover?

- I'm afraid we'd need to see their faces for it to count as face-to-face ☹

*are we able to bank books?

- You can read book say for round 2 before you've finished round 1, but you wouldn't be able to post them to your team's review thread until round 1 was complete.

* would a book by C.C. Hunter work for

32. Read a book with the word 'cat' in either the title or author's name.

- I'm afraid that one wouldn't work, we're looking for the letters 'cat' as part of the title or author's name, so something like 'Catching Fire', or 'White 'Cat', or something by authors like 'Georgia Cates', or 'Catherine Fisher', or 'Cat Patrick'.

* Skulduggery Pleasant (Skulduggery Pleasant, #1) by Derek Landy Is that one okay for "38. Read a book which is not tagged 'romance' (at all)."? It's tagged as "no-romance" 5 times, but apparently one lone person tagged it as romance ._.

- as long as it's not tagged 'romance' on the first 10 pages of tags, we will count it ☺

* I have a question about the categories with the "tagged" category. Where exactly do you find out where or what a book is tagged? I've never gone off tags before.

- They're on the right-hand side of the screen, under the bit that says "genres".

So for example, I'm reading The Will of the Empress (The Circle Reforged, #1) by Tamora Pierce right now and it's tagged as Fantasy, Young Adult, Fiction, and Fantasy > Magic under genres, and you can also click the link just under that that says "See top shelves..." to view more things that it has been tagged as.

* For this one here:

67. Read a book which has a word starting with the letter 'P' in the title.
(+5 bonus points if your chosen book has the word 'power' in the title.)

Can we skip "A" or "The" at the beginning of the title?

- it's just a word starting with 'P' for this one, not a title starting with P ☺

* Are we allowed to use other editions for the bonus??

- I'm afraid that you have to use the original title for all books, including books that you are using to earn bonus points.

* would a crown count as jewelry?

- Yes, you can use a crown for jewellery ☺

* what was decided on description #1? Is “unable to remember” ok? Or just can’t remember?

- It does have to be 'can't remember' if you want the bonus points. It can't be anything else.

* Can this series count for #3. Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton ? She has a stepmother and her mom is dead.

- I'm afraid I'm going to have to say no, the bonus asks for a book which 'features a step-mother', and Anita's step-mother doesn't actually seem to feature in the books at all. She's not in the blurbs or other people's reviews, and when I searched in the book she's only mentioned once in the first book (when Anita complains about something she's said), and twice in the second book (again when Anita mentions something she's said), so she doesn't actually even appear in either of those books, she's just mentioned, which isn't really being featured.

* For the purpose of No. 3, would Cinder count as a main character of Cress (The Lunar Chronicles)? It's my understanding that all 3 of Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress are the main characters and share pretty equal screentime, but since I haven't actually read the book yet I can't be sure.

- Cinder would count as a main character in Cress, and her stepmother does feature in the book, so that would be fine for number 3 ☺

* For the category "63. Read a book which has the letters 'N', 'E', 'A', and 'R' in the title/author's name, or the letters 'F', 'A', and 'R' in the title/author's name.
(+5 bonus points if your chosen book has all the letters 'N', 'E', 'A', 'R', 'F', 'A', and 'R' in the title/author's name.)" does the title/author need to have 2 A's and R's or is one of each enough?

- It has to have 2 A's and 2 R's, so you have to find all 7 letters ☺

* I have a quick question. If all of our team read for the time bonus could be bank those book and get the bonus or is it just one time we can count it?

- That bonus is only available once, within the first 13 hours (Goodreads time), and can't be earned again, even if another team member reads a book within the same time period.

* Just wanted to check whether Hilary McKay's Fairy Tales by Hilary McKay would count for 'fair' (think it's no21)

- Yes, that's fine ☺
- You will only get 1 point for it though, just so you know, as it's illustrated.

* Do you need to start with Part 1 or doesn't that matter?

- You can start anywhere and you can do the descriptions in any order you choose. All 70 are available to be used from the start ☺

* what if I start the book based on my time (Philippine Time)? It's March 1st later. Will the book I'll be reading still counts?

- As long as you are starting and finishing on the same timezone, it will count. If you are ahead of Goodreads time, you just have to remember that the challenge will end for you slightly earlier than it ends for people who are using Goodreads time ☺

* For No.51 tagged 'junk', does it need to be tagged at least 2 times as 'junk', or does it need to be in the first 10 pages of tags?

- unless it says otherwise, your book needs to be tagged at least twice for it to count. This applies to numbers 19, 22, 25 (solo), 28, 51, and 65. It isn't stated on all the individual descriptions because it's in the rules in message 6 on the main page -

* If you are asked to find a book 'shelved' or 'tagged' with a particular word, then the book must have been tagged at least twice to count.

* think in the UK I'm a bit ahead of Goodreads time (going off the fact that if I start a book before 8am it often comes up as starting the month before). Can you confirm what time I'll need to have posted a review for the bonus of post before 13.00.

- we're 8 hours ahead of Goodreads time in the UK, so when we hit 13:00 Goodreads time, it will be 21:00 in the UK ☺

* For number 14: 'Read a book from a series with at least 8 books.'
Does it have to have 8 primairy works or just any? For example: The red queen series has 8 works, but only four are primary works. Would that work? :)

- they have to be full-length primary works, we wouldn't be able to count the Red Queen series as having 8 books in it.

* three people have not checked into Team Junk Lady (F). Not sure what the deadline for checkins is considering we start tomorrow.

- I'm afraid we don't chase people in fun teams as it's just-for-fun. We quite often get up to 50% of people in fun teams who don't show up, or if they do never post a review. Unfortuntely that's just the way it is. The only thing I can do is to add more people to your team if more people sign up, there isn't really anything else I can do.

* One Dark Throne (Three Dark Crowns, #2) by Kendare Blake Would this count for a chair... and flowers on the throne can be thrown...

The Jewel (The Lone City, #1) by Amy Ewing The GBR - could her dress count as a "white ballgown" ... or do her jeweled hairpins count for #26 "item of jewelry"?

- One Dark Throne is fine for chair, and you don't need to have anything else on the cover because you can throw the chair ☺

I'm afraid the dress looks more silver than white to me, but on this edition جواهر by Amy Ewing the girl is wearing earrings and a necklace, so that would count for jewellery ☺

* This has probably been explained before so I apologize, but for number 10’s bonus, “review must be posted by 13:00 Goodreads time”, what does that mean exactly, time wise?

- Goodreads runs on Pacific Standard Time. I'm not sure which timezone you are in, but we'll be hitting March 1st 12am Goodreads time in about 17 minutes, so you need to have your review posted within roughly 13 hours of this message ☺

* I have a cover with a key hole and wood but not the whole door. Dreams of Gods & Monsters (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #3) by Laini Taylor Does it count as a door?

- I'm afraid we'd need to see a bit more of the door to count it, as it could be something else, like a lock on a wooden box, especially as you can't see a door handle ☹

* just to make sure, series buddy reads count as buddy reads right? It doesn't have to be a buddy read specifically for that one book?

- It will count as long as your buddies are planning to read the same book. If it's a buddy read thread for books 1 and 2 in a series, and you're reading book 4, then we wouldn't count it. Similarly, if you're reading book 1 and your buddies are reading from book 3, then we wouldn't count it.

* Would a tag of DNF count towards the "given up" challenge? or does the tag or shelf specifically have to say given up?

- It needs to be 'given-up' because that's what is said in the movie. It might be worth asking on the solo chat thread to see if any of the other solo players have a DNF shelf you could use?

* Hi! I was wondering if The Forgetting (The Forgetting, #1) by Sharon Cameron would count for Part 1 #1: read a book where someone forgets a period of time?

- It sounds like most of the city are suffering from amnesia, so that's fine ☺

* Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix (Rise of the Empress, #2) by Julie C. Dao I want to make sure this is okay for #3’s bonus of there being a featured stepmother. The entire book is about the main character (who’s mother died in the first book) trying to gain her kingdom back from her stepmother, the Empress. It does have the word stepmother in the blurb.

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* Does it have to specifically say ‘given up’ or can DNF or some variant work? Sorry if you’ve already covered this.

- If you mean tags, then it has to be 'given-up', if you're going by books that a fellow solo player hasn't finished, then it doesn't matter what their shelf is called, if that makes sense?

* For the 100-200 page bridge book, it fits the category (there’s a short paperback version of 120 pages), but has a bridge so 5 points bonus, plus page points 4, doubled for buddy so 8, so 13 points for bonus and pages.
Are we able to do that, use different editions? As if the book is 120 pages but then we're also saying it's more, are we able?
Like for the page count tasks, can we use two different ones (one that fits the task and one that has more page for more points)?

-For the descriptions where you're asked for books with a specific page count, so the bridge one and the one with rocks to throw, you can only use one page count, you can't say the book is 120 pages long for the description, but then claim points for 400 pages, it's one or the other. That means that if you have a longer book which also has a shorter page count, you have to decide whether to use it and sacrifice the points to complete the description or not.

* Would Our Dark Duet (Monsters of Verity, #2) by Victoria Schwab work for 70. Read a book which is the final full-length novel in a series?

- Yes, I think there are only 2 books in that series ☺

About a 7th done. I might ask Natalie to help me make it fancy. But she's been busy lately so I'm not sure if she will have time. :(

Answered Questions:

* For no 45 I thought The Roar would work for the bonus, but I’m reading it again and now I’m not sure. For the bonus does the book have to be called just Roar, or can the word be part of the title?

- For number 45, the title needs to be 'roar', like this - Roar (Stormheart, #1) by Cora Carmack or this - Roar by Aria Cage, there can't be any other words in the title.

* Does A fiú (The Giver, #4) by Lois Lowry count as a ship on cover? It's a boat that goes on the water :p

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* Sarah, would Stealing Snow (Stealing Snow, #1) by Danielle Paige work for #1

- it looks like the main character is unable to remember a period of time, so that's fine ☺

* For 20. How do you guys check the times? I updated the book as currently reading when I started and then finished and rated when I finished, but I don’t see any time stamps other than on my profile for the review.

- for number 20 you have to do status updates when you start and finish. If once you've marked your book as 'currently reading' you then do a status update at 0 pages/% and again at 99% or however many pages there are minus 1. When you do status updates Goodreads logs the time, and we can click on your status update to see when you started and finished. They show up underneath your review, so when you link to your review we can easily check ☺

* For solo does each person have to do tasks separately or as a team like thing?

- solo means on your own. Each solo player has their own set of 70 descriptions each, and they complete them how they want to in their own time. Only the people who are on teams work together to complete the descriptions ☺

* Do we need to use description for the book you've started last month? Or page count is enough?

- any books that you've started before March can just be posted for page points, they don't have to fit a description ☺

* for a series BR what if Reader A wants to read books #1-5, Reader B wants to read books #1-2, and Reader C wants to read books #4-5? Who gets bonus points?
Can Reader C read book #4 when Reader A is still at book #1?

- for series buddy reads the same as regular buddy reads, the idea is to read the book together and discuss the book. For your example above, there should be some sort of schedule as to which book will be being read when. If reader A and reader B are reading book 1 on the first of the month, and aren't planning to read book 4 until the 22nd, then the earliest reader C should be starting is the 15th - 7 days before book 4 is planned.

If a fourth reader turns up and wants to read book 7, then they shouldn't be reading that on the thread because none of the other readers are planning to read that book.

* if a book is tagged at least two times with fae or something containing fae, would it work for . Read a book featuring one or more fae.? Even if searching the book it doesn't contain faes...

- that description requires there to be at least 1 fae in the story, so if it's tagged fae, but there aren't actually any fae in the book then it wouldn't count. We'd be looking at the blurb or other people's reviews to verify that there are actually fae in the book.

* would The Kiss Thief by L.J. Shen work for 26. piece of jewelry on cover?

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* For the ones that require letters, is it the author only, title only, or both together? For example, NEARFAR, does it have to be in title only or author only, or can it be combined?

- for near/far you can use both the title and the author's name, so if there is an N and an E in the title and then an A and an R in the author's name that would be fine ☺
If you're doing the bonus, you do need to find all 7 letters though, including 2xA, and 2xR ☺

* is this okay for "16. Read a book which has at least 2 eyes on the cover (they must be open and visible on the cover)."? The Faceless Ones (Skulduggery Pleasant, #3) by Derek Landy

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* Maybe this one! Love Bites (Darkness & Light Duology, #1) by T.L. Clark !! It says witches and faeries in the blurb!

- That would work ☺

* I was wondering if The Black Key (The Lone City, #3) by Amy Ewing would work for the bonus of a white dress on the cover? It's kind of like a greyish-white so I wasn't sure if it would count.

- it looks white enough to me, so it's fine ☺

* Can Hold Me Close (Bridgewater County #4) by Vanessa Vale count as a couple on cover?

- Hold me Close is fine as there are 2 people on the cover

* would Lucky Suit by Lauren Blakely count as a couple face to face?

- I wouldn't be able to count Lucky suit as you can't see their faces to know if they're face-to-face ☹

* So the scandal by Fredrick Blackman’s original title would be beartown?

- I assume you mean this one - Beartown (Beartown, #1) by Fredrik Backman? It looks like it was published in Sweden first, which is where the author is from, and the original title was Björnstad

* I was wondering if short childrens books like the Heartland series by Lauren Brooke counts towards this challenge.

- I had a look and the first 8 books (I didn't check the whole series) are tagged 'young adult' more than 'childrens', so as long as the number of pages is higher than 100 pages, you'll get 1 point per 100 pages, and they will count towards descriptions ☺

(If it's a later book in the series, just check the 'genres' bit on the right side of the book's page to make sure it's tagged 'young adult' more than 'childrens'.)

* Does The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air, #2) by Holly Black work for main characters mother dead and step mother bonus? I know that in cruel prince that both are true, and the step mother was definitely a prominent character, but don’t want to read reviews and be spoiled before reading, to find the mention of step mother (I feel like her name would be mentioned as opposed to those words anyway).

- I just checked and that one would count for the 'stepmother' bonus ☺

* regarding Wicked King, it is listed on this Junk list, but I cannot find it tagged by junk by 2+ people. Does this still count?
It's on the top of page 18 on the Popular Junk Books List.

- It's only been tagged once so I'm afraid it wouldn't count. I think it's only the first 3 and a bit pages where the books are tagged twice or more.

* So how many times does a book need to be tagged for it to count? (referring to #51)

- Twice ☺ You can find it in the rules on page one -

* If you are asked to find a book 'shelved' or 'tagged' with a particular word, then the book must have been tagged at least twice to count. (Tags can be found under the 'Genres' heading on the right hand side of your chosen book's Goodreads page. Clicking on 'See top shelves...' will allow you to see all the tags for a particular book.)

* Will These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) by Amie Kaufman work for couple face to face?

- if you use the Portuguese edition - Quando as Estrelas Caem by Amie Kaufman, then it will be fine for face-to-face ☺

* If a book is tagged “junk-food” would that count for junk, or it has to be on its own?

- I'm afraid it has to be junk ☹

* Would Beware the Bell Witch by Thomas Kingsley Troupe be consider YA? Its not showing up where the tags usually are.

- I checked on Amazon and it said that the age range was 8-12, which would be middle-grade, and the book is also illustrated so because of that and the page count of 136 pages I'm afraid it wouldn't count for this challenge ☹

* Would Postcards for a Songbird by Rebekah Crane work for the BONUS POINTS : 63. Read a book which has the letters 'N', 'E', 'A', and 'R' in the title/author's name, or the letters 'F', 'A', and 'R' in the title/author's name.
(+5 bonus points if your chosen book has all the letters 'N', 'E', 'A', 'R', 'F', 'A', and 'R' in the title/author's name.)?

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* Just want to clarify if Edge of Eon (Eon Warriors, #1) by Anna Hackett qualifies as face to face for #64. Thanks

- Yes that's fine ☺

* Hungry Hearts 13 Tales of Food & Love by Elsie Chapman

Lists the following for authors:
by Elsie Chapman (Editor), Caroline Tung Richmond (Goodreads Author) (Editor), Sara Farizan, Sandhya Menon (Goodreads Author), Sangu Mandanna (Goodreads Author), Rebecca Roanhorse (Goodreads Author), Adi Alsaid (Goodreads Author), Phoebe North (Goodreads Author) , Anna-Marie McLemore (Goodreads Author), Jay Coles (Goodreads Author), Rin Chupeco (Goodreads Author), S.K. Ali (Goodreads Author), Karuna Riazi

For something like:
Read a book which has the letters 'B', 'F', 'F', in the title/author's name.

which authors would count? Obviously there aren't two f's there so the point is a bit moot, but I'm trying to figure out where to slot it, so I just need to know which (if any) of the people you would count as the author.

- it is in the rules on the first page -

* For descriptions where you are asked for words or letters in an author's name, you may use the names of any author of that book, as long as it is an author, and not an editor, illustrator, translator, narrator etc.

So for 'Hungry Hearts: 13 Tales of Food & Love', Elsie Chapman and Caroline Tung Richmond wouldn't count as they are editors, but the other authors - Sara Farizan, Sandhya Menon, Sangu Mandanna, Rebecca Roanhorse, Adi Alsaid, Phoebe North, Anna-Marie McLemore, Jay Coles, Rin Chupeco, S.K. Ali, Karuna Riazi would all count ☺

* Would "cannot remember" work for 5 bonus points if the phrase 'can't remember' appears in the blurb of your chosen book.

or does it need to be "can't"?

It has to be 'can't remember' I'm afraid ☹

* Would a car door work for Read a book which has a door on the cover or the word 'door' in the title? :) Lost Then Found (New Beginnings, #1) by Christina Freeburn

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan Would this work for prompt number 56:)

- Yes, that one's fine as it has 'sea' in the title, and you'd also get the bonus points for the ship ☺

* Heartstopper Volume One (Heartstopper, #1) by Alice Oseman So, quick question. This is a comic, 288 pages, so no page points, right? But can I use it for one of the challenges? This one, for example (the letters fit, as the author is Alice Oseman)
"31. Read a book with the letters 'H', 'E', 'L', and 'P' in the title.
(+5 bonus points if your chosen book actually has the word 'Help' in the title.)"

- I'm afraid that as it doesn't reach the minimum page count you wouldn't be able to use it on its own to cross off a description. The only way you could use it would be to find another comic or short story that matched the same description, and add the page counts together.

* For the task 42. Read a book with the letters 'P', 'A', 'S', and 'S' in the title/author's name.

Can you use both title and authors name? Or is it just one of the other?

- You can use both, so if there's a P and an A in the title, and 2 S's in the author's name, that's fine ☺

* How do we know what the first one published was if there are a couple that just say 2008? This one for example: The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

- We would go by the original title posted on the books page (unless we had evidence that it was incorrect), so we would go with 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard' ☺

* Sarah, would you accept the castle in the background of this cover as a building? Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1) by Morgan Rhodes

- Yes, that's fine ☺

* Sarah, will you accept this for door on the cover? Gypsy Moon (All The Pretty Monsters, #4) by Kristy Cunning It's dark and the handle is behind all the words.

- Yes, that's fine ☺

Answered Questions:

* Sarah or Abbie, would you consider this a white ballgown? Die Auswahl (Cassia & Ky, #1) by Ally Condie

- I did manage to find a cover with a bigger picture, but I can't quite decide what colour it is, from some angles it could be white, but from other angles it looks pale green. I'll have to see what Abbie thinks and get back to you ☺
- I just wanted to let you know that Abbie had a look and she thought that the dress was pale green as well, so I'm afraid we won't be able to give you the bonus points for that one ☹
