Sassyquatch | 3 comments I'm searching for books that are set in isolated wilderness areas. Or places that have been abandoned! I really enjoy exploration, uncovering mysteries, characters getting lost/in way over their head, etc.

Examples:
Annihilation
The Ritual
The Terror
The Ruins
Dark Matter
Ararat
Bone White
The Deep

^I've already read the above books. Just mentioning them to avoid being rec'd them again! :-)

Thank you!

Randy Money | 432 comments Are you interested in short stories in such settings?

"The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood
"At the Mountains of Madness" by H. P. Lovecraft
"Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr.
"The Autopsy" by Michael Shea (isolated, but otherwise may not fit your criteria)
"White" by Tim Lebbon
"On Skua Island" by John Langan
"Valentia" by Caitlin Kiernan

Kiernan's The Red Tree would also mostly fit, just ignore the misleading book cover.

One of my favorite topics!

I really enjoyed Blood Games by Richard Laymon, might do a re-read of it soon.

Blood Games A gruesome horror novel for a terrifying Halloween by Richard Laymon

Laymon's restored version of his 1992 horror novel that tells of a group of former college friends who hold a reunion at a deserted resort lodge only to find they're sharing it with a maniac. — They meet for one week every year, five young women, best friends since college, in search of fun and thrills. Each year they choose a different place for their reunion. This year it's Helen's choice, and she chose the Totem Pole Lodge. Bad choice. The Totem Pole Lodge is a deserted resort hotel deep in the woods with a gory, shocking past Helen has a macabre streak and she can't wait to tell her friends all about what happened at the lodge and why it's now abandoned. But Helen and the others are in for a nasty surprise. The resort isn't quite as deserted as they think. And not all the gruesome events at the Totem Pole Lodge are in its past. The worst are still to come....

Jeff (gentlemanjeff) | 19 comments I have to second The Hunger by Alma Katsu and "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood. Anything by Blackwood will probably involve being lost in the woods, especially "The Wendigo."

This is my favorite genre! Highest recommendation is probably for Roosevelt's Beast by Louis Bayard. Tied for second would be Near the Bone by Christina Henry and Devolution by Max Brooks.

Also, try: The Descent by Jeff Long, The Night Will Find Us by Matthew Lyons,
The Chill by Scott Carson, Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand, The Forest by Michaelbrent Collings, The Cavern by Alister Hodge, and The Deep by Michaelbrent Collings.
