2019 March Pick-It-For-Me Challenge

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a friendly push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.

✱ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.

A few hints to help with book selection:
✱ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✱ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✱ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✱ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✱ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf). This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

RULES
(view spoiler)[Beware the Ides of March! – or so the saying goes. While modern day might completely miss this interesting date, anyone familiar with William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar will undoubtedly recognize it as the phrase uttered by the fortune teller to Julius Caesar… right before Caesar was murdered, in the play – and reality – on the Ides of March. The Romans considered the Ides of March as a deadline for settling debts and many a superstition has derived from Caesar’s unlucky date of demise. The fact that an aura of doom stuck to a date is not surprising. People tend to give special significance to certain dates. This tendency is similar to numerology, which interprets cosmic significance in numbers and dates, seeing them as good or bad, lucky or unlucky.
Of course there is no objective reality to lucky or unlucky dates, nothing proven anyway! What can sometimes happen is that people will come to believe a date is “bad” or unlucky and will focus on anything that goes wrong on that day. This is called confirmation bias - more on that later. So, while the Ides of March is a relatively unknown superstition, let’s spend this month’s PIFM delving into some of the more commonly heard superstitions.

“It’s Beginners Luck!” - Usually grumbled about by an expert who just lost a game to a beginner, “beginners luck” is an idea that the newbie is more likely to win at something they are trying for the first time. It’s possible beginners might come out ahead in some cases because the novice is less stressed out about winning than those with experience. Or, more likely, this superstition is based in confirmation bias, a psychological phenomenon in which people are more likely to remember events that fit their worldview. (If you believe you’re going to win because you’re a beginner, you’re more likely to remember all the times you did – and forget the times you ended up in last place!) I’m going to play the lottery for the first time now… :D
Pick a book that is a 1st in its series or is a standalone book. Or pick a book with one person on the cover.

“Find a penny, pick it up…” - And all day long, you’ll have good luck! That ditty is stuck in my head now. Finding money is considered lucky in and of itself, but again, that could be a superstition based in confirmation bias. “Last time I found a lucky penny, I got called for that job I wanted!” And so goes the superstition!
Pick a book with a wealthy character in it or with brown or money on the cover. Or pick a book with a title that rhymes or is a parody of an idiom, a common metaphorical phrase. (Ex: Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (rhyme) or Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover (idiom of 'never judge a book by it's cover'))

“Don’t let a black cat cross your path!” - Cats have been companion animals throughout history and they play all sorts of mythical roles. In ancient Egypt, cats were revered and today, more than 81 million cats are considered pets in the USA alone. This superstition arises from old beliefs that witches kept animal familiars, in many cases taking the form of domestic cats. So, since I’ve had black cats all my life, does that make me an unlucky witch?
Pick a book with an animal in the story or on the cover, or with mostly black on the cover. Or pick a book with a Paranormal MP tag.

“Bad luck always comes in threes” - Remember that confirmation bias psychological phenomenon? The belief that bad luck comes in threes is a classic, superstitious example. A couple of things go wrong, and believers may start to look for the next bit of bad luck. All I know is I lost my shoe today and then my earring and I’m now waiting for the third bit of bad luck!
Pick a book that is part of a trilogy or has three things on the cover that form a triangle (your interpretation). Or pick a book that includes a love triangle.

“If you break a mirror, that’s seven years of bad luck” - Like the number three, seven is often associated with luck. According to folklore, breaking a mirror is a surefire way to bring doom on yourself for seven years. This superstition seems to arise from the belief that mirrors don’t just reflect your image; they hold bits of your soul. This belief led to people in the old days of the American South covering mirrors in a house when someone died, lest their souls become trapped inside. Seven years is a long time, which may be why people have come up with counter-measures to free themselves after breaking a mirror. This includes touching a piece of the broken mirror to a gravestone or grinding the mirror shards into powder. Also a surefire way to cut your hand, which seems like a pretty obvious first step in that seven years of bad luck!
Pick a book with a mirror on the cover or with a silver or gray on the cover. Or pick a book with the numbers 3 and 7 in the page count or publication date.

“666” - Three sixes in a row gives some many people chills. A superstition that harks back to the Bible. In the Book of Revelation, 666 is given as the number of the “beast,” and is often interpreted as the mark of Satan and a sign of the end of times. Well I just got the chills...
Pick a book with red on the cover or with a mystery, suspense, horror or fantasy theme/subtag. Or pick a book with a number in the title or in the series name (the series number doesn’t count!).

“Cross your fingers!” - The “fingers crossed” phrase is one I use all the time and might be the most common superstition on this list. Those wishing for luck will often cross one finger over the other, a gesture that’s said to date back to early Christianity. The story goes that two people used to cross index fingers when making a wish, a symbol of support from a friend to the person making the wish. Typically, anything associated with the shape of the Christian cross was thought to be good luck. The tradition eventually became something people could do on their own and these days, just saying “fingers crossed” is enough to get the message… well, across!
Pick a book that features friends, has a historical tag or has a hand or hands on the cover.

“Friday the 13th” - Did you know, if you’re scared of Friday the 13th, the word used to describe you is friggatriskaidekaphobic? Try saying that five times fast! Another word for the fear is paraskevidekatriaphobia. This superstition seems relatively new, although individually the superstition around the number 13 and Friday dates back to the late 1800s. Friday has long been considered an unlucky day (what?!) – according to Christian tradition, Jesus died on a Friday. The number thirteen has an equally long history as an unlucky number. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in North Carolina, about 17 million people fear Friday the 13th. Many may just fall prey to the human mind’s desire to associate thoughts and symbols with events, a la confirmation bias! Frankly, I’m more afraid of mispronouncing those phobias!
Pick a book with the numbers 1 and 3 in the title, series, page count or publication date. Or pick a book from a series of at least 13 books in it. Or pick a book with a symbol - or any item from the previous 7 superstitions - on the cover.

“Bad luck always comes in threes”: Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder is amazing as the heroine is given the choice to be put to death or become the new poison tester. Brownies and Broomsticks by Bailey Cates starts a magical cozy mystery series that has a love triangle.



“If you break a mirror, that’s seven years of bad luck”: From your TBR there is Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson. One of my favorite friends to lovers romance set in college with a cocky, but fun hero in The Deal by Elle Kennedy.



“666”: Great suspenseful romance by Linda Howard - Dying to Please. Or an interesting plot where there is a city where people go to "disappear" from the normal world in City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong.



“Cross your fingers!”: Check out Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Or check out Hollywood stars in the 30s in The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Amanda Quick.



“Friday the 13th”: I think since you enjoyed Women of the Otherworld series, you'd also really like Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. Or there is a warrior who learns to about love when she joins a "paranormal" TV show in To Woo A Warrior.
