Hello!

Thank you to everyone who commented or read along this month. I hope you enjoyed the discussion.

Do you have any final thoughts on Educated?

Why do you think books of this "type" (people reflecting on their childhood in a damaged/difficult home) are so popular?

Would you recommend this book to others?

What will you take away from this book, if anything?

Personally, Westover's distinction between school and education is the aspect of the book that will stay with me the most. I am a big believer in lifelong learning and know that my education continues beyond the four walls of any academic institution. Tara takes it one step further in encouraging people that they are capable of learning and educating themselves. People may not realize their full potential because they don't feel qualified to learn something.

A perfect example is Westover writing this book! How much courage and confidence is must take to write a book. I've watched interviews where she stated she read a lot of memoirs to get a sense of the writing styles and how to structure a memoir. She is by no means an "expert" but she didn't have to be - she was determined to learn and she dedicated the time to do so. I found this very inspiring.

Please feel free to share any of your thoughts about Educated. :)

Next month we will be discussing a gruesome true crime book - I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara. We look forward to continuing the conversation.

Thanks!

~Nicole~
