Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) This discussion is for the March 2019 Classics group read of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

*SPOILERS NOT ALLOWED* Please see the Spoilers thread for the spoiler discussion.

Who plans to join this read? Will it be your first time or a reread?

Elvira Dobis | 10 comments I'm starting it today! Never read it or any Vonnegut.

Renee (elenarenee) I hope to start this week

Kerri | 711 comments I read this book a few years ago and liked it! One of my brothers also likes it so my oldest brother read it and absolutely HATED it. He sent us both texts saying “why in the world do you guys like this book??” It sparked a discussion that led to almost my entire family now doing a book group every few months. So it has an even more special place in my heart bc of that.

I probably won’t reread as I have a lot to read for my private goals but I will probably follow along with the comments. But I may jump in again, just to see if I feel the same :)

Ildiko Nagypal (inagypal) | 17 comments This was the first book I read by Kurt Vonnegut a few years ago and he has become one of my few favourite authors.

I've read several books by him since then and I liked The Sirens of Titan, the Breakfast of Champions and Player Piano a lot. I'm currently reading Fates Worse Than Death from among his books.

Kimberly Peterson | 201 comments I'll be reading this one probably towards the second half of this month!

Laura (lfergu11) | 106 comments I read this book back in high school, and it was also my first Kurt Vonnegut book. He is one of my favorite authors now and I only have a few books of his left to read. I really enjoy his books, so I will definitely have to reread this one with the group!

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I read this in the last couple years. I really enjoyed it although it's far from conventional. If you have trouble with it, just take a deep breath and tell yourself: "so it goes."

Tracy Challis (tracychallis) | 5 comments I just read this book in two days and I loved it. I am looking forward to hating what people have to say about it.

Tracy Challis (tracychallis) | 5 comments I don’t know how to fix my last post. I meant I am looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks...stupid auto correct.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) Tracy, if you’re on the app, you cannot edit your post, but in a browser there’s “edit” just below your comment on the right hand side, between “reply” and “delete”.

Caitlan | 1 comments I will hopefully be starting this week!! I’m excited. It’s always been on my list to read, but I just never got around to it.

Korina | 22 comments I will be starting this soon! It is my first book by Kurt Vonnegut and also my first book with this book club! I’m excited!

Betsy | 930 comments So, guys, this has been on my to read list for ages, and I started it... and dropped it! Now I'm going to head over to spoilers hahaha!

message 15: by Nora (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nora Briggs (abriggman) | 433 comments Just started reading this book and so far......see you in the spoiler room,

Kathy I started listening to the audiobook yesterday. I really like the narrator and I was surprised to find out the narrator is Ethan Hawke! I like his narration so much I can’t imagine reading the book now....ok no spoilers just had to share. 🙂

Shelley This has been on my To Read List for a while, although I really do not know anything about the book. I have not read anything by this author, but my sister and a friend have both read it and liked it a lot. I'm hoping to get to it by mid-March.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) I just got the audio off hold. Same with Lord of the Flies, so will have to decide which first.

message 19: by Emily (new)

Emily | 2 comments I am starting the book tonight. I have not read any of Kurt Vonnegut books. I am looking forward to experiencing him as an author so I can form my own opinions on his writing style.

Melinda I really enjoyed Vonnegut's other book Cat's Cradle, but read this one a few years ago and wasn't really into it. I can hardly remember it actually. I'm looking forward to reading it again and getting more engaged via the discussions.

This begins our 2nd group discussion of this catch-up book. Here you can comment, without spoilers, on any aspects of the book, either before, during, or after reading it.

Gil-or (readingbooksinisrael) (meirathefirst) | 125 comments I added to this to my tbr back in 8th grade when I was more cynical and hopeless than I am now (or at least now I'm more upbeat about it), but I only read one book by Kurt Vonnegut then and none since. It was Galapagos, which I really enjoyed, but I think that if I reread it now it would be less interesting to me as I've read more developed books on the same topic.

Slaughterhouse-Five seems very different, though the back of the book is very vague (but I do like the blurb, "a funny book at which you are not permitted to laugh, a sad book without tears".)

Sandra Dias (sangdias) | 239 comments I bought this book for a different book club, a few months back, but it took so long to arrive that it did not make it on time for that and then it just sat on the shelf. This is the impulse I needed to read it,

Alyssa | 19 comments I have not read this book, but it is on my list. I am excited to read it. I am interested to see how this book compares to other science fiction I've read. I know that this book is not supposed to be as light hearted as some I've read.

Gil-or (readingbooksinisrael) (meirathefirst) | 125 comments I'm around 30 pages in. So far, I'm really enjoying the writing style (except for the sexism).
