Hello all,

March 25 is Pecan Day, and since the largest producer of Pecans is Georgia, followed by Texas I decided that the challenge this time should be a setting challenge. For your March challenge you must read a book that take place at least partially in the South.

You could read a historical romance novel like An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole, or a contemporary novel like By Invitation Only by Dorothea Benton Frank. You can also read non-fiction book about something or someone that has strong ties to the South like The Magnolia Story by Chip Gaines.

Good luck!

Greg (danceyeah) | 289 comments I read American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road by Nick Bilton. The "mastermind" who built the Silk Road website lived in Austin Texas when he created it.

Excellent book. Intriguing, masterfully written. 5 stars.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I have a goal to read as many Pulitzer Prize winners for Drama as I can. This topic is perfect for A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, the 1948 winner. It is set in New Orleans.

Carolyn | 182 comments When I saw what the challenge was I decided it was time for a re-read of To Kill a Mockingbird. About a third of the way through right now, partially audiobook and partially regular physical book.

message 8: by Tanya (new)

Tanya | 36 comments I've been kicking around the idea of reading The Siren, and it looks like it spends some time in South Carolina. That sounds like my pick this month.

I’m sure any time period is fine.

I think I’ll re-read To Kill a Mockingbird. Huckleberry Finn is also one of my favorites.

message 22: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I have finished A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams -- 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, set in New Orleans. It was very good and I enjoyed it tremendously!

message 23: by Em (new)

Em | 70 comments Ideas if you are still looking for something to qualify...
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, in my top 5 books ever read.
The Southern Sisters Mystery series by Anne George, very funny, especially if you happen to know anyone from the South.
Lucky Strikes by Louis Bayard, a YA book, but this old gal still enjoyed it.
Those are my top three recommendations. Enjoy whatever you check out.

message 24: by Linda (new)

Linda Nielson | 280 comments I read Persuasion: A Latter-day Tale for another group. It takes place in Virginia. Is Virginia considered a Southern State? If not, I have another book I can read.

Most definitely! West Virginia split off to fight for the Union, but Virginia itself was firmly in the Confederate camp, which means it automatically counts.

message 26: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri are also Southern states.
