paulabits (paulabits) Let me say this is the best challenge I've seen because merging both seasons was such a great idea, it gives you plenty of time to read and truly enjoy.
This is my first time in one, I post my list today (finally!) so just let me know if there is any mistake.

Thanks for the feedback! It's our first time doing it this way..so it's basically an experiment lol. I just feel like college students are very busy people and it might be a stretch to be competitive in a challenge where you only have like 3 months.

That's my goal too! To better than I did in the summer challenge! I sucked it up big time! lol

Michelle (literaryomnoms) Just a quick question- is it okay to take ideas from other people's lists and read some of the same books?

message 107: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Michelle--for sure! I end up taking a few from people because I didn't even think of them for a task or realize they could work! That's why I like posting my list on this thread too for people to get ideas! :)

message 108: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Just as a reminder..with Kelly's task added there is a possible 460 points that can be earned.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Walt Disney was born on the 5th of December, would it be alright to read The Tao of Pooh for 5.2? Since Walt Disney did invent Winnie the Pooh?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Does Shoe Addicts Anonymous work for 5.6?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Would Atonement work for 10.4?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) If I type up a list and post it will someone check it for me?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Also I wanted to read Kite Runner as my historical fiction but that's not going to work is it?

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Sarah:

I will be happy to check a list for you if you type one up. To answer your questions:

-The Tao of Pooh will not work for that task as Pooh was actually created by AA Milne and also it needs to be about the person or a book by that person or pertaining to their expertise.

-For 5.6 it was really intended to be a drug/alcohol addiction as it says in the task that September is Drug/Alcohol Addiction Recovery month..so I'm going to say no to that one. If you need help finding one to work i could help you.

-Atonement will certainly work for 10.4. (I've really wanted to read this because I liked the movie)

- The Disney Encyclopedia is fine for 10.8

- I wasn't sure if The Kite Runner would be historical fiction but it seems to be categorized on a ton of shelves as such and I just did a search on it and it seems that one person says it's not historical fiction in the strictest sense but could be called that..so I'll take it..I'm sure you'll find some pretty interesting non-fiction to go with that considering the time frame of the book and the history in Afghanistan.

Ok, that makes sense. So do we need to get a certain amount of points, or does the person who gets the most win?

message 117: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
If anyone finishes it they win and get to pick a task for next challenge..that is..unless EVERYONE finishes it. lol. OR if nobody finishes..then whoever has the most points wins!

message 118: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments I can't wait until this challenge starts!! I'll bribe you to let it start earlier than the 7th!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) If anyone wants to help, I will be putting TBH on the numbers that I am unsure about. I am talking about the list I will be posting here shortly.

I'm leaving for work soon but I'll be happy to take a look when I get home tonight if Lori hasn't already taken a look through it for you.

message 121: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (literaryomnoms) Two questions:

Are we allowed to change our lists later, if we find a book we are more interested in reading for a particular challenge?

Also, how do you get the strikethrough to appear on a post? I have been copy-pasting my list form Microsoft Word and it doesn't copy the strike through when I try.

Thanks!

message 122: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (literaryomnoms) Does Flowers for Algernon work for 15.3 and The Time Traveler's Wife for 10.6?

message 123: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Michelle, for strike through, check out the link at the top of the comment box that says "some html ok" and it will give you instructions.

message 124: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (literaryomnoms) I looked at "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman. It seems fascinating! I am not sure if it fits better into the scary story category or alternate universe. Help?

message 125: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I'd say alternate universe, definitely. That's actually pretty much the premise of the book, she lands in a parallel universe.

Yes. You are most certainly allowed to change them. I always do! :) And I see that Tahleen helped with the strikethrough question. THanks Tahleen! :)

Michelle: I don't know much about Coraline..but I trust Tahleen's answer..so you can use it! :)

Also, I looked at Flowers for Algernon and I didn't see anything about an alternate universe in the description of the book. (That doesn't mean there isn't)..I'm just not sure. Anyone know?

For the romance category we were looking for more of an actual romance novel..let me ask Lori what she thinks and I'll get back to you on that one.

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Haha Jamie we can do better this time around!!!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Anyone know of a good site for the book mentioned in a song?

message 130: by Jacqueline (last edited Sep 04, 2009 06:18PM) (new)

Jacqueline | 59 comments Sarah, if you look back to page 1 of this thread, Jamie and Emily posted a couple of long lists of books that are mentioned in songs.

I was just wondering, could a dog be considered a farm animal?

message 131: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Thanks Jamie, I'm glad I could help! (And if I'm pushing my way into answering the questions too much let me know, I don't want to tread on any toes since I know I'm not a moderator!)

message 132: by paulabits (new)

paulabits (paulabits) Question about task 25.7: The Birth of Tragedy Out of the Spirit of Music by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche works for English?

message 133: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Paula: That works.

Tahleen: Not at all! You are fine! :)

Jacqueline: You know I thought about that as well. I mean..technically certain dogs are considered farm animals. We were going for more of what the list had (horse, cow, etc.) but since technically dogs and cats are considered farm animals I'll allow it.

Sarah: As Jacqueline said, we did post some lists for that one. I think it was back on the first page..Were you able to find it?

Kayla | 604 comments Now, I don't mean to sound completely ignorant about computers (though, unfortunately I am), but how do you strikethrough the text when you are finished with a book from the list?

message 143: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (kellieag) I think I'm going to start with Water for Elephants for the historical fiction task (I didn't think it was considered historical fiction, but it was categorized that way on bn.com, so I went with it).

message 144: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (literaryomnoms) I'm starting with Shanghai Girls for book one of the library task. I just got out of work (11 pm) and I'm thinking of staying up till midnight just to officially begin the challenge then!

Kayla | 604 comments I think I'll start with either the book w/in a song task, for which I chose Breakfast at Tiffany's, or the library book task, and I'd start with The Book About Blanche and Marie for that one. I don't know yet.

First, I want to finish Choke, which I started a couple days ago, before I begin the challenge.
