Anna Shumaker (annashu) hahaha well I have a lot of time to spare. Also I think my Kindle helps because then I'm not really restricted to what is sitting on my shelves.

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments Hi! I'm a late newcomer to the challenge - I hope it's okay that I added my list to the other thread and claimed points for what I've read since the challenge began and fits the task and stuff?

Also, my edition of The Great Gatsby doesn't have 150 pages - could I still use it? I'm definitely recompensing that loss with other books...

:D

That's fine!

message 254: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments That's fabulous, thank you!

And another question: Is there any way I could use Hamlet for the hyped-book part (10.3)? I've never wanted to read Shakespeare but now I'm forced to it by a class, under death-threat. Everyone around me is all, "How can you not want to read Shakespeare!?" but I'm just really BAH about it.

I'd say that works. I feel like it's definitely more subjective of a task. Good luck! :)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments Thank you! I'm shutting up now :)

Kaion (kaionvin) Is it too late to join? Gah, I wish I found this earlier. I probably won't have any time to read once classes start again, but until then, I got three weeks. Hoping to tackle down some of my enormous "bought but unread" books, so I can decide whether to keep them or not and clear some space. (My to-be-excised pile of books is currently two feet high.)

I'm not good at coming up with books at the top of my head, so a beginning list (probably add books as I find them/find they fit the premise. Not even sure I can really do more than 2 a week.

5 points:
7. Blood and Chocolate by Annete Curtis Klause
8. Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger

10 points:
3. Twilight by Stephanie Meyers
6. The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks
8. Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver W. Sacks

15 points:
1. The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury
2. Gay-Neck: The Story of a Pigeon by Dhan Gopal Mukerji (India)
?
3. Dune by Frank Herbert
5. Animal Farm by George Orwell
8. “Full” “Badge” “Document” or “Heterosexual”

20 points:
About a Boy by Nicholas Hornby

25 points
1. Harlem Renaissance: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Not without Laughter by Langston Hughes
2. Known classic: ?
New classic: Holes by Louis Sachar
3.
4. The Master and the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
song: “Love and Destroy” by Franz Ferdinand
5. Slaughterhouse-5 by Kurt Vonnegut
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
6. From the land of green ghosts by Pascal Khoo Thwe (Burma/Myanmar)
?
7. Best subject: Science (Biology or Chemistry) - ?
Worst subject: Wood, PE, History - ?

You are still fine to join! Good luck! :)

message 260: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments Hi Kaion! Lovely, another late-comer ;) Some of the books on your list are on mine as well, but I'm probably the most curious about Blood and Chocolate - I watched the film and must admit I rather liked it, though I think the book is supposed to be quite different? At any rate I'd love to hear your thoughts about it - I need to figure out if I should pick it up or not :)

(Also, I think you need to post your list to the Official Record of Points thread...)

message 261: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I thought Blood and Chocolate was very good, especially for its genre.

message 262: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments I found the werewolf concept of the film pretty intriguing and would like to see how it's done on paper, and since you say it's good... I did not want to buy more books, but at the moment I really feel the need for werewolf-themed fiction. GAH. I will resist... for another month or so. I will!

message 263: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I'm fairly sure I read it in middle school and liked it well enough, but apparently not enough to remotely remembered what happened in it or to read it ever again. But yay, rereading is a perk of a porous brain, I suppose. Been meaning to check out the movie sometime.

Finished Mrs. Dalloway mostly while I was restless and couldn't sleep last night. My friend borrowed it from me ages ago and said she liked it. Certainly interesting in the experimental standpoint, but I probably won't ever read it again.

I have been meaning to read it! It's just been sitting on my shelf for a while.

message 265: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) I have a question!
For

3. September 24, 1992: Sci Fi Channel (now called Syfy Channel) is launched. Read a book set in an alternate universe.

, would HG Wells' The Time Machine work? It's about time travelling, and the character ends up in a year in which the world is way different from ours (and impossible to happen). It falls a little short of 150 pages, but I can compensate with other books (thinking of reading War&Peace)!

message 266: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Yeah, that's fine. :)

Just a funny side note: Last week while channel surfing, they were showing Casino Royale (James Bond) on the SciFi channel! :)

message 269: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) For my historical fiction and non-fiction (15.) I was planning to use A Christmas Carol, but then it was too short so I read a collection of Dickens Christmas stories but I just started to wonder if that would still be acceptable for the challenge, or if you would prefer it be all one novel.

message 270: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I couldn't find if this was asked somewhere previously, but in Kelly's contemporary-British-writer task: Would contemporary mean still alive? Or do they have to write about contemporary Britain? (And Britain would mean UK, including England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales?)

message 271: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Annashu--that's fine if the the stories were in the same book.

Kaion--Hmm I'm not exactly sure what she meant. Kelly? Or anyone else that has a better understanding of what contemporary British writer would encompass?

message 272: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I would say a contemporary British writer is someone who has written something in the past decade--someone like Iam McEwan or Mark Haddon, or Phillip Pullman.

message 273: by Anna (last edited Jan 03, 2010 04:45PM) (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I think she included a link that had a list of authors

Link was actually added by Paula it is http://www.contemporarywriters.com/au...

message 274: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen So... my best subject in school was English. Do I need to read a book about literature as a subject, like a critical book, or could I read a classic and count that?

message 275: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Classic is fine. Or you could read about someone who is a writer or something like that.

message 276: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Excellent. Thanks!

I noticed I was moving along quite well until about mid December, then road block!

Has anyone else hit a wall?

message 279: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments Tami, the exact same thing happened to me. As soon as Winter Break started, I stopped reading as much. I've been on the same book for the past 3 weeks. Though, to my credit, the book is The Historian which is pretty long. Still, I should have finished it by now.

message 280: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Mine was because of work. Mostly. AVeraging over 50 hours a week the last 4, and it is only going to get worse, I mean better!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Road block for sure! I haven't really been reading much of anything!

message 282: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) Ok, so, I have a question - I'm currently reading Bonjour Tristesse, which is set in France, for 15.2 (Around the World: Read 2 books set in 2 different countries that are different from where you live and that you have never traveled to before.). Now, I hadn't been to France at the time I designated this book to the challenge - nor have I been there so far, nor did I know I'm going there next week (so excited!). Since I will be finished with the book before I do indeed go to Paris - does it still count? Haha

message 283: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Yep, as long as you finish it before you go there!

message 284: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) I most likely will :) thank you!

message 285: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) I'm a guy. Will Fairest work for Romance Novel? That's about as far as I'll go.

message 290: by David (last edited Feb 10, 2010 09:40AM) (new)

David (canadiandave) Goose Girl and Artemis Fowl. Close enough to be synonyms? How about Sceptor of the Ancients and Eternity Code or Titan's Curse and Ella Enchanted (which was essentially a curse)?

David (canadiandave) Sorry, I misread her post and upon re-reading, I realized I didn't know what I was talking about. LOL

Oh...Titans and Monsters could be synonyms too, eh?

message 295: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just read The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection for 10.8
the thing that I found most interesting was each chef's personal take on their restaurant, especially Thomas Keller's philosophy of cooking respectfully and logically with as little waste as possible.

The subject was cooking which I do know some about, but it focused on high-end restaurant work which I don't really have any experience with. Let me know if you think it is acceptable.
