I forget whether I've gotten FR from these accounts with the suspicious links, but I do get likes from them. Are the accounts old, like from 2011? I've noticed that too--almost always 2011. Hacked accounts?

I have no idea. Well, at least it taught me not to accept random friend requests without checking their shelves and bio first.

Julia | 117 comments I look at the new reviews weekly for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two, and I reported several of them. There were about 20 spam reviews: all IDENTICAL but each under a different name. It is very concerning, that's for sure.

That's really strange.

Iris Schechter this is crazy. Maybe on Fb they expect to rip off money from gulible people, but here... what do they expect to obtain from a bunch of book neards who exchange reading recommandations ?

I just deleted anyone I didn’t know in person from my friends, am I still safe?? I have a group I am a moderator for one and it’s only got like 30 members but still...

To also scam people out of money. If it can happen on FB, it can happen here. They look for vulnerable people.

I'd say you're safer. The only way to be 100% safe is to delete your account. Check out the 30 members when you can, especially the ones with no avatar. Delete and block them if they have a spam link in their profile.

I've received numerous requests from "users" like this as well. I check out their profile page, and there is very little if any info at all, and always with a very questionable link to a dating site or other such thing. I reject the request and report them as well. This is a great website for finding your next great read, as well as connecting with other people with similar interests. We as members can't be bothered with wasting our time sifting through ridiculous fake profiles and trolls bent on ruining an otherwise pleasurable experience on this site! Let's not let this happen to a respectful site like Goodreads! Report these profiles immediately!

I don't understand why this happens anyway. I find it odd that this stuff happens in Goodreads but I haven't heard this happening in Facebook. What is their motives anyway?

message 63: by lyria (new)

lyria soso (lefpol) | 117 comments They have sent me a handful of friend requests saying only "hi (and then my user ID)"

I think it's the same thing, because they all have no pfp and suspicious web links in their bio.

Be careful guys! Always ignore request, flag and blog these bots/people!

If you didn't click any links within that person's profile, you're fine. Simply friending a suspicious account accidentally is not enough to compromise your own account.

Minnette Tafoya | 4 comments Like someone else mentioned, I only accept friend requests from people I know in real life and we discuss goodreads. This is why we can't have nice things! I am glad the original message was past on. I am a member of a small group and will share!

~☆~Autumn | 1 comments Thanks for this warning. I had a suspicious guy bugging me to chat with him off goodreads recently. It was kinda creepy. I just blocked him. He had hardly read anything and seemed to think that goodreads is a dating site. I try never to follow links off goodreads. What is the point? It is just boring how many try to do this.

Thanks again!

Amanda (has no self-control re: books) (ajosephine) | 71 comments I just had a rando with 1 book and no pic try and friend me, I just don’t understand?? I’m not into tech - like being friends on Goodreads is even that sneaky or the first step to stealing all my information?? It just seems so weird…I don’t like it because I don’t know their end game
