Ashleigh | 735 comments Would you accept a book with 'sax' in the title for wind instrument in title/on cover? It's referring to a saxophone, which according to Wikipedia is a wind instrument.

Book in question? Might be easier to decide if we saw the book cover.

Scribd, you say? and it's yellow..... seems made for use as an uno card next month!

message 109: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Yeah I found it on Scribd. I'll save it until the beginning of next month for uno. My team didn't get any yellow cards this month unfortunately so here's hoping we get some in April.

SHUT UP! "unfortunately"! You were dancing in joy at no yellow cards, and you know it!

We were yellow-tastic this month :( but got them all covered in the end. I am braced for more next month, as E has warned us that the randomiser went heavy on yellow this year!

Ashleigh | 735 comments I would have been dancing with joy at no yellow cards if that didn't mean we had 5 reds and 4 WD4s. Honestly, I'm sick of looking at red books -.-

message 112: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10098 comments Mod
Yeah, a randomiser that spreads the colours out evenly is what we all want.

I was grateful just to have 3 WD4s this round. and even more so that 2 were paired with colour cards & Draw 2s in the hand, so I only actually needed 1 WD4.
Unlike Feb, when we had 6 WD4 (and only 7 colours, don't forget). That was some tense times!

Fingers crossed that April is better :)

message 118: by Alysa (last edited Mar 21, 2019 09:56AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Two questions:

1) I know that we still get Right-Side-Up-Spring task credit for volunteering to write DQ's, even if we don't get picked.
But technically, the task says "Read a book that is a NBRC April 2019 BOM and volunteer to write discussion questions"; it doesn't say anything about actively participating in the discussion once you've volunteered.
So I'm confused as to whether I would still get task credit for only reading the book but not participating, now that I have volunteered. (I do plan to participate in the discussion either way, I'm just looking for clarity ;D)

2) Not specifically about Right-Side-Up, but:
If one volunteers to write DQs but doesn't get picked, does one still get a Ruby Coin? Or is the Coin limited to the chosen people who actually end up writing questions....
I assume it's the latter, but I'm new to the Coin thing. It seems like if one gets credit for volunteering in one case, it might also apply to the other case.

message 119: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments There are 3 ways to get a coin:
-half participation
-writing discussion questions
-completing all discussion questions from each day within the month

so if you volunteer to write dq's and don't get picked you can still get a coin for participation but not for writing dq's because you didn't write any. Does that make sense?

I'll leave the first part for Karen to answer as that was her original task and I'm not sure her intention.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Does this work for wolf? (the book caught my eye while at the library today and it looks really good. But it's long-so may not get to it anyway)

Black Leopard, Red Wolf (The Dark Star Trilogy, #1) by Marlon James

If you look close you can see the wolf. Plus the word wolf is written but not sure if that counts as being on the cover for the Canadian animal thing.

eta: just looked at cast of characters and there's a cat shifter listed.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments On the spreadsheet. I found a book for "beaver". For some odd reason it's filling the background of the reason cell in green as soon as I put my data in there. No idea why. I even deleted the row and tried again. And it would not let me go back and undo anything. Hopefully I didn't mess anything up. (eta-it just let me back up so the row is no longer deleted-but the cell is still green and it won't let me change it)

Also, we aren't supposed to list the tasks in # order are we? I haven't done that. I just put in all my minimal requirements first-so I'd make those a priority.

No, you don't need to do them in order.
The cell isn't green when I open your sheet. Did you have the "find" box open? If you do, the word that you are looking for in the box will highlight the cell in green as long as that box is open

Yes the idea is that you read it, volunteer for DQs (and if picked write them). But it isn't mandatory that you engage in the discussion

Even if you have no further participation beyond volunteering? So, like, volunteering in itself would constitute half-participation, for a total of 1 coin?

Although it is a wolf, a wolf in and of it self isn't necessarily a Canadian animal. Better to use for the cat shifter task perhaps

Laura said yesterday that wolves work for Task #9 (even though not strictly Canadian).
But FYI also said that we cannot use shifter animals at all for Task #9, (See comments 69 and 77), so I think a lot of other people are punting their shifter books to Task #15 too :)

Sweet! Now — assuming I’m not going for extra Gem Coins — I don’t have to worry about discussion in the case of some real-life emergency gets in the way or something. Good to know :)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Karen ⊰✿ wrote: "Oh she is very nice to let wolves in for that task :)"

Indeed! I started out assuming wolves weren’t allowed unless proven to be “Gray Wolves” specifically, but other people were assuming any wolf will do.
So while on the one it helps that pretty much any wolf will do, not being able to use shifters really narrows the field.
I bet a lot of people will use shifter books and not realize this has been nixed...

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I don’t think it is a wolf shifter but I will double check.

Well Laura also said no “green” wolves for example, so I think we’ll need her to clarify whether it makes any difference if it’s a stylized drawing of a wolf as opposed to a photo or a realistic drawing.... :/

Would dew, eggs, or blossom count as spring words?
Can I use Daughter of Smoke & Bone for the 3 O's?
Where do i find a list or a link to all the players so I can compare books?

I'm not sure about dew (maybe others can chime in), bug eggs and blossom are close enough

I'm not sure what I'm missing with Daughter of Smoke & Bone why do you think it may not work? I can see 3 O's (it must be exactly 3)

The link to all the players is in the main tracking sheet. The link is posted in the 'all about" thread here (and spreadsheet is here

The goodreads app sucks. The one for the Kindle fire is even worse than the phone app.

I always assume books can't be started ahead of time in a points based challenge like this one.

Yes, correct. That 's what Karen said above. The countdown clock was posted so players would know when to start in their time zones . It was posted in this thread (scroll back ) and the wine bar.

FYI, it looks like the Minimum Length (100 pages?) is also missing from the Rules post. (It only mentions the word count verification requirement for Childrens.)
