Alysa H. | 3840 comments It's only "right side up" in the northern hemisphere though. By your logic, we would not have been allowed to use "July" for a summer word last month, for example, because the mod in charge of the challenge was Australian.

And the About post does say "we invite you to get a bit topsy turvy, right side up, and jumbled up"! Maybe Mods can chime in :)

I have other "spring word" books... but I really REALLY REALLY want to read my "October in title book" :D

yeah the December was because it was an upside down where December is summer.
So Spring needs to be right side up - March/April/May

This has been happening to me, too! I have resorted to going to Google Books now to search within books for specific words.

[[ Frankie ]] (freedbyfiction) | 536 comments Would “tree” be considered a spring word in the title? Since trees start getting their leaves in spring? ;p

Google Books is a lifesaver for that purpose!

It really is! I used to rely on the Amazon “Look Inside” option, but for some reason, it just isn’t letting me search past the sample anymore.

message 209: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Some books don't allow searches on either. But that through me for a loop with a couple of books. One book it showed ruby mentioned a couple of times. So I go to search my actual Kindle copy so I can quote the line on my spreadsheet and nope not in there. Luckily it did have another task it fit.

The problem I've had with Google books is that it only shows me 5 mentions. Which is fine if you only need it in the book once, but not helpful when you're looking for a scenario with certain words (like someone who won't cut their hair!)

Tati | 1350 comments So, I just got a very advanced copy of a book that will be published in 2020. No ARCs of it are available.

Is there any chance I could use it for a word in text task? Or no, as it wouldn't be possible to verify it?

message 213: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Can I ask for clarification on task #18 "Read a book where the page numbers add to 21 (i.e. 345 pages = 3+4+5 = 12)" is it 21 and 12 is just the example? I ask because I am stalking someone's page and they used a book where it adds up to 12. So I'm wondering how many others are confused by this.

I was wondering this myself. I was just going to use 21, since that’s what the task states. But I was still curious whether it is actually supposed to be 21 or 12.

Yes it is 21. If you look at the goal FAQ spreadsheet all of those tasks use that same example. If you’ve seen someone get confused perhaps shoot them a message; or send one to our mod account and we can let them know 😉

Hello Jenn,
Signups closed on March 21; unfortunately we aren't taking late additions but on the bright side more individual and team challenges are in the near future! Keep an eye on the monthly newsletter and any PM's from the moderator account.

Thanks!

@ Mary
Psst: the master spreadsheet has your points, but says 0 books read. I think there are added lines on your indiv. spreadsheet that are messing up the counts.

message 229: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok I will play with it this weekend. My spreadsheet is registering books read. I rearranged some could that be the problem? I decided I wanted all my read books on top.

message 230: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I don't really know how to fix my spreadsheet. I moved some rows around and deleted some. I'm wondering if that broke my connecting to the main spreadsheet? I just assumed the formulas would carry over. Sorry about that. It never occurred to me that we couldn't move stuff around. Didn't mean to create work for the mods. I don't mind starting my spreadsheet over again if it's easier for you guys to connect a new one than my broken one.

I don't remember exactly which ones are lines I added and which aren't.

No problems, I have fixed it. Feel free to cut and paste text, but if you delete/add rows it will break things as there are hidden formulas on your sheet ; plus the formulas on the main sheet that refer to it :)

It looks like the All Players tab on the master sheet is now correctly totalling Mary’s books & points, but the Leaf tab isn’t.

Only if they have actually lost one of the five senses as a result of the dementia

re-reads are allowed if it's been more than 6 months since you last read it.

I'm only re-reading one this month, and it's been about 30 years!!

Sorry for the miss in answering your question. Neither of those words pop to mind when I think "spring" even with your reasoning. Its a 250 pt question so its meant to be a little bit difficult; not every book will work for this task. Some of the "approved " spring words are in the FAQ or you can view other players to get ideas of what they read.

You obviously don't live in the UK. There isn't a word that describes a British spring better than "rain" LOL!

The problem is there isn't a word that describes a British Summer / Autumn or Winter better than "rain" :-D

....and I am a Brit!

I'm reading Kindred right now, and wondered if I could use it for "has lost one of their senses"

evidence 1: right at the start we learn that Dana has an arm amputated - loss of touch (or large part of touch)?

evidence 2: Carrie can't speak - not one of the classic 5, I grant, but inability to speak is limiting on a person's ability to interact and influence the world without additional effort

Thoughts?

Hmm it’s a bit of a stretch imo 😉 sorry! I think it’s kind of like the Dementia question. If the task gets a bit off track then it kind of starts to delve into general disability

Yeah, I thought it might be! The difficulties of having to read books for RL and then having to shoe horn them into GR challenges! #firstworldreadersproblems
