The final phase of the book is Hiding. Vargas writes, "I am not hiding from my government. My government is hiding from me." After declaring himself as an undocumented citizen, Vargas expected the government to act. Instead, not even known to ICE, he was stuck in limbo until he attended a vigil in a Texas border town. Vargas admitted to Border Patrol he does not have a visa and is in the United States illegally. Why did Vargas stop hiding? What would you have done in that situation?
