Trike | 11199 comments Yeah they do.

Guardians of the Galaxy is now the number one movie in the US at $262 million, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier a close second at $260 million.

Worldwide, it's Transformers (one billion), Maleficent (747), X-men (744), Captain America (714), Spider-man (708), Dragon (582), Apes (555), Godzilla (507.9), GotG (507.4), Lego (468).

Personally, a movie's box office doesn't matter much to me, except that it means they'll be able to make more movies in this vein. If only Serenity had made $300 million, we might have had a Serenity 2. Other than that, I don't really care, but it's interesting info anyway.

Warren | 1556 comments Agree. Although it is interesting to note that Maleficent already made $750 million global. Since its a Disney film - I'm betting that the family princess will get her DVD the geek does. Which should bump it up to a billion dollars.

Trike | 11199 comments The one thing that travels really well is spectacle, and no one does it better than Hollywood.

Also, as one foreign distributor put it, "We really like the previous generation of movie stars." So Jolie, Hanks, Bullock, Cruise, Depp... that group commands big box office overseas.

Spectacle is also why Bollywood movies do so well throughout Asia and the Middle East. It's just a different kind of spectacle.

Also, I keep seeing (and loving) these Marvel comic book movies, and I can't help wondering why DC is screwing up so bad. They've got to be green with envy over Marvel's dominance.

Ahhh, there was a time in the not too distant past when Marvel couldn't do much right in the theater, and DC "owned" them.

DC has released an extensive movie plan for the next 8-10 years ... hopefully they can learn from some of their recent mistakes and pull it off. At least they still own the movie rights to all their characters.

You're right. DC does have ambitious plans for their universe. I just hope the movies are worthy of the characters. Fingers crossed.
