The Crystal Maze Challenge - June 2019

How it works:
For this challenge, the aim is to work your way through The Crystal Maze, collecting crystals as you go.

The Crystal Maze is split into 4 zones - Aztec, Industrial, Futuristic, and Medieval - with the Crystal Dome in the centre.

Within each of these zones, your team will need to read books to complete each of 4 different challenges. These challenges are split into Physical, Mental, Skill and Mystery challenges.
***Please note: -
*To complete one of these descriptions, your book must be at least 200 pages long, and must be classified as 'Young Adult', 'New Adult', or 'Adult'.
*Descriptions cannot be completed using children's books, middle-grade books, poetry, illustrated books, plays, graphic novels, non-fiction books (including autobiographies), books with less than 200 pages, or books started before June.
*Books which don't meet these criteria can still be used for page points and buddy read points as usual, they just can't be used to complete descriptions.
*Re-reads can also only be used to complete "Medieval-Skill" - * Read a book which you have read before.
You cannot complete any other description with a re-read, other than the description which asks you to read a book which you have read before.
*Short books (novellas) of less than 100 pages can be added together to reach the 100-page minimum page count for points, but cannot be added together to reach the 200-page minimum page count for completing descriptions.
* Foreign editions with different titles may be used to complete descriptions as long as they are made up of recognisable English letters. Please link to the edition you are using when posting your review.

Aztec Zone:
Physical -
* Read a book which has an author whose name (first or last) begins with a letter 'S' (for Strength). (We will also accept an author with an initial which is 'S.' such as R.S. Grey.)
* Read a book which has a letter 'B' in the title or author's name (for Balancing).
* Read a book which does not have the letters 'O' and 'B' anywhere in the title, author's name, or series name (for avoiding 'OBstacles').
* Read a book which has the letter 'Y' in the title or authors name (for 'sYmbols')(Eg:You)
Mental -
* Read a book which has an 8 letter word in the title. (Eg: Northern Lights)
* Read a book which has at least 1 human face on the cover. (Must be able to see this clearly, faceless bodies will not count, anything without a forehead will not count.)
* Read a book which has 5 words in the title. (We will accept 'A', 'I', or a number as a word, but any words after a colon ':' will not count.) (Eg: I Want It That Way)
* Read a book which has a title in which no letter is repeated.
(Eg: 'Shiver' - 1*S, 1*H, 1*I, 1*V, 1*E, 1*R - would work as there is one of each letter,
'The Naturals' - 2*T, 1*H, 1*E, 1*N, 2*A, 1*U, 1*R, 1*L, 1*S - would not work as the T and A are both repeated.)
Skill -
* Read a book which has a skull on the cover (must be able to see it, a regular person won't count.)
* Read a book which has something green on the cover. (If you're not sure, try running the cover through TinEye Labs Color Extraction Lab here - https://labs.tineye.com/color/ )
* Read a book which has the letter 'X' in either the title or authors name (for 'deXterity'.)
* Read a book which has a word beginning with the letter 'W' in the title (for 'sWing') (Eg: What I Thought Was True)
Mystery -
* Read a book which is tagged 'Unique' (Please remember that books must be tagged at least twice to count, and that books which are illustrated, such as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will not count, even though it is on the list.)
* Read a book which is part of a trilogy. (Must be a full-length novel in the series, not a novella. Only series where there are 3 primary works will count, so for example The Lone City Series would count as a trilogy even though it has 4 novellas, as it has 3 primary works. If a series currently has 3 books, but more are due to be published, then we will not count it as a trilogy.)
* Read a book which has the letters 'S', 'P', 'I', 'R', 'A', and 'L' in the title or author's name. (Letters can appear in any order, and may be spread over the title and author's name, as long as they all appear at least once.)
* Read a book which has the letters 'R', 'E', 'A', 'C', and 'H' in the title or author's name. (Letters can appear in any order, and may be spread over the title and author's name, as long as they all appear at least once.)

Industrial Zone:
Physical -
* Read a book which has an author whose name (first or last) begins with a letter 'A' (for Agility). (We will also accept an author with an initial which is A. such as Justin A. Reynolds.)
* Read a book which has the letters 'P', 'I', 'P', and 'E' in the title or author's name. (Letters can appear in any order, and may be spread over the title and author's name. Your chosen book should have all 4 letters though, including 2 P's.)
* Read a book tagged 'Physical' (Please remember that books must still meet the guidelines for this challenge in order to count. If a play, or an illustrated book, or a children's book is on this list, it will not count. Books must also be tagged at least twice to count.)
* Read a book which you have a physical copy of (i.e.: paperback, hardback, not ebook or audio.)
Mental -
* Read a book which has a number in the title (Eg: can be the number, or spelled out such as - The 5th Wave, or I Am Number Four)
* Read a book which has the name of a shape in the title (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, star, or heart) (Eg: Circle of Shadows)
* Read a book which has a four-letter word in the title. (Eg: Dividing Eden)
* Read a book which has 'AM' or 'PM' in the title or author's name. (Letters must be together as 'am' or 'pm', not separated.) (Hint, the name Amy contains 'am', and the name Chapman contains 'pm'.)
Skill -
* Read a book with a title starting with the letter 'T' (for Turn) (Titles starting with 'The' are fine for this description.)
* Read a book which has a number repeated twice in its page count (eg: 339, 772, 144, 282 etc.) (It is fine to use one page count for this description, and a second page count to claim page points.)
* Read a book, which is written by an author, who you have already read a book by. (Eg: if you have read a book by Sarah J. Maas previously, then any books you read by her this month will fit this description. Please note that books must still be 200 pages long etc. If you do not have a book written by your chosen author, marked as 'read' on your profile, then your book will not count for this description.)
* Read a book digitally, ie: an ebook or audiobook. (Not a paperback or hardback.)
Mystery -
* Read a book with the word 'dark' in the title or author's name. (Letters must appear next to each other in order as 'dark', but can be part of another word such as 'darkly' or 'darkness' etc.)
* Read a book which has a similar page count to the last book you posted (page count must be within 15 pages of the page count for the last book you posted - this means you personally, not a teammate). (You may still use one page count to complete this description, and another to claim page points.)
* Read a book which has a telephone/mobile phone/cell phone on the cover. (Please check with us first if you are not sure if your book counts.)
* Read a book which has the word 'air' in the title or author's name. (Letters must appear next to each other in order as 'air', but can be part of another word such as 'fairy' or 'billionaire' etc.)

Futuristic Zone:
Physical -
* Read a book which has the letters 'ST' in either the title or author's name (for Stamina). (The S and T must be next to each other as 'st', but can be part of another word or name, such as 'strange' or 'Stephen').
* Read a book tagged 'Sci-fi'. (The Sci-fi tag must appear in the top twenty tags for your chosen book.)
* Read a book which has the letters 'M', 'A', 'Z', and 'E' in the title or author's name. (Letters can appear in any order as long as all 4 appear across the title and author's name.)
* Read a book which has the name of a planet in the title or author's name (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.)
Mental -
* Read a book which has the word 'Crystal' as part of the title or author's name.
* Read a book which has a colour in the title or author's name - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, scarlet, white, black, pink, grey - please check with us before reading if you would like to use a colour other than those listed. (Colours can be part of another word, for example, such as 'Redemption', or 'Meredith'.)
* Read a book which has exactly 384 pages. (Eg: Ruined, Changes in Latitudes, This is How it Happened, Everless) (You may use one page count to complete the description, and another to claim page points.)
* Read a book which has the letters 'G', 'R', 'I', and 'D' in the title or author's name. (Letters can appear in any order, and may be spread over the title and author's name, as long as all 4 appear at least once.)
Skill -
* Read a book which is part of a series, but isn't the first or last book. (We will only count books in a series which are a whole number in the series, ie - #3, #4 etc. We will not count books which are 0.5, 2.5 etc. So Pretty Little Liars would count as the first book in the series, even though there is a prequel labelled 0.5 - Ali's Pretty Little Lies)
* Read a book with at least 500 pages.
* Read a book which has the letters 'L', 'A', 'S', 'E', and 'R' in the title or authors name. (Letters can appear in any order, and may be spread over the title and author's name, as long as all 5 letters appear at least once.)
* Read a book which does not have the number 3 in its average rating. (3 must not be in the average rating when we check your review. If you think that the average rating may change so that 3 does appear, then please ask me to check the average rating and make a note of it, before you read the book.)
Mystery -
* Read a book which has the word 'gate' as part of the title or author's name (for 'naviGATE'). (Letters must appear next to each other as 'gate', but can be part of another word such as 'surrogate', or 'gatekeeper'.)
* Read a book which has a musical instrument on the cover. (Please check with us before reading if you are not sure if your book counts.)
* Read a book which has an author whose name (first or last) which starts with the letter 'D' (for Dial). (We will also accept an author with an initial which is 'D.' such as Natalie D. Richards.)
* Read a book which has the number '2' as part of its average rating (eg: 3.32, 4.21). (2 must be in the average rating when we check your review. If you think that the average rating may change so that 2 does not appear, then please ask me to check the average rating and make a note of it, before you read the book.)

Medieval Zone:
Physical -
* Read a book which has an author whose name (first or last) begins with a letter 'P' (for Physical). (We will also accept an author with an initial which is 'P.' such as Stephen P. Kiernan.)
* Read a book which has a word or name starting with the letter 'E' in the title or author's name (for Escape). (Eg: Everything, Everything)
* Read a book which has a word beginning with the letter 'T' in the title (for 'Tool'). (Eg: A Thousand Pieces of You)
* Read a book which has one or more keys on the cover (as in door keys), or has the word 'key' as part of the title or author's name. ( This list may help - https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7... ) (or another example would be Marian Keyes)
Mental -
* Read a book which has two different words in the title which both start with the same letter (eg: Rich People Problems 'P', 'P' - 'P'eople 'P'roblems, or We Were Liars 'W', 'W' - 'W'e 'W'ere.)

Skill -
* Read a book which has an apple on the cover, or in the title. (This list might help - https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7... )
* Read a book which has 50% or more 5 star ratings (click on rating details to see percentages.) (Again, this must be 50% when we check your review. If you think this may change, then please ask me to check and make a note of the percentage before you start reading.)
* Read a book which has at least one hand, and at least one eye on the cover (for hand-eye coordination)(these must be visible on the cover, if the hands or eyes are obscured by something - like sunglasses for example, then it will not count.)
* Read a book which you have read before (it must have been at least a year since you last read it). **Please note that this is the only description that can be completed with a re-read.**
Mystery -
* Read a book which has the letter 'C' in the title or author's name (for Clues). (Eg: Carry On.)

* Read a book which is number 1 on a listopia list which has at least 100 books on it (please link to the list when posting your review.) (Again, if you think this may change, please ask me to check and make a note of the books position, before reading the book.)
* Read a book which has an 'M' in either the title or author's name (for 'M'ystery.)(Eg: 13 Minutes.)

Basically, your team earns points by reading books which fit the above descriptions.
- You may use each of these descriptions as many times as you wish.
- You may use these descriptions in any order you wish.
- You do not have to read books from all the categories.
- Your book must meet the criteria explained in message 2 above to complete descriptions.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
But if you would like to earn some bonus points...

* Each time your team completes one of each type of challenge within a zone (1 Physical, 1 Mental, 1 Skill, and 1 Mystery), your team will win a Crystal!
* Each Crystal that your team earns, is worth 10 bonus points!

But wait, there's more!
* Each time your team wins 1 Crystal from each of the 4 zones, you will earn a trip to The Crystal Dome!
(This means reading books which match the descriptions for 1 Physical, 1 Mental, 1 Skill, and 1 Mystery in each of the 4 zones (Aztec, Industrial, Futuristic, and Medieval) = a total of 16 books).

*Each time your team earns a trip to The Crystal Dome, us mods will use Random.org to award you between 10 and 40 bonus points! The more trips to The Crystal Dome you make, the more points you can win ☺
So, for example, if Team Tom read books which completed 1 Physical, 1 Mental, 1 Skill, and 1 Mystery in the Medieval Zone, they would earn -
* Page points (+/- buddy read points) for all 4 books read.
* 10 bonus points for completing one of each challenge within one zone.
* 1/4 towards a trip to The Crystal Dome to earn more points.
This would show on their team review thread like this -

Rules/Guidelines:
* Books must be read between the 1st of June and the 30th of June inclusive. Books started before June may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in June, and will not be able to cross off any descriptions using them. Please let us know how many pages you have read in June when posting your review. There is also a maximum of 3 books per person that can be submitted, when books have been started before June.
* Books must be over 100 pages long, without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 150 pages minimum for middle-grade and children's books.
-- 300 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.
(This minimum is for points, not for completing descriptions.)
* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 150 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, and The Secret Garden to name a few.
(Middle-grade, and children's books cannot be used to complete descriptions in this challenge.)
* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 300 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category. This includes books such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, books by Roald Dahl, Doll Bones, Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children Series, A Monster Calls, The Little Prince, and Charlotte's Web to name a few.
* Please note that even if a book is shelved as 'Unique', it must still meet the other criteria for completing that description. For example, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is shelved as 'Unique', but cannot be used to complete the Aztec Mystery description, as it has photographs and is therefore classified as illustrated.
* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 300 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.
* If your poetry book or graphic novel does not meet the minimum page count, we will allow you to add together the page counts of 2 or more books to make it to the minimum page count. Books must be posted at the same time, and must be less than 300 pages each.
* If you are reading novellas which are less than 100 pages long, you may also add together the page counts of one or more novellas of less than 100 pages, to get to the minimum page count of 100 pages. Books must be posted at the same time.
* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to either Abbie or myself.
* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to either myself or Abbie via personal message. Please let us know that you will be doing this before you do it though, and please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, and stating 'review sent to Sarah/Abbie by personal message' after 'Review:'.
* Re-reads are allowed as long as it has been at least a year since you last read the book, and you write a new review or updates. We recommend that you post on your review '2019 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.
* Please note that re-reads can only be used to complete "Medieval-Skill" - * Read a book which you have read before. You can't complete any other description with a re-read.
*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.
*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave.
* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.
* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for June 2019 will count.
* If you are using a 'series' buddy read thread, it is still expected that you will be reading the same book in the series as your buddy, at roughly the same time. If a buddy read thread is reset for book 4 in a series, then it is expected that people will be reading from book 4, and if updates are posted for books 1, 2, or 3 they will not be counted as you do not have a buddy reading those books with you.
* If you are joining a series buddy read thread, and it is more than 14 days since anybody else on the thread finished the book that you're reading, then the buddy read will not count.
* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. It is important that buddy reads are posted on the planned buddy reads list so that everyone is given the opportunity to join.
* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.
* Bonus points will be given as detailed in the 'points' section below.
* Please note - bonus points for crystals and trips to The Crystal Dome will be awarded to team totals only, not to individuals scores. This means that Solo participants will not receive bonus points for completing descriptions, and will not earn trips to the Crystal Dome.
* For descriptions where you are asked to find specific letters in a title, 'And' may be substituted for '&' if it occurs in a title, and any words which occur after a colon ':' in a title will not count. We will accept words which occur after a comma ',', hyphen '-', or full stop '.' on a case by case basis.
* For books which have more than one author, all authors may be used when looking for specific letters for example, but only as long as they are authors. Translators, editors, narrators, illustrators etc. will not count.
* We will accept foreign editions of a book which have a different title when looking for letters or words, as long as the title is made up of recognisable English letters. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure as to whether your book counts.
* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions, or 'flipback' or dwarsligger editions (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)
* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.
* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.
* We will be tracking the number of books that people are reading, to see whether they are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that they are on. If over a period of several months you are consistently reading less than the required number of books, we will ask you to move to a lower level of team, or go solo. This is because it is unfair to other team members if you continue to sign up for a medium/serious team, yet are only reading 2 books a month.
* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to either myself or Abbie.***

Points :
* Points will be awarded based on pages read:
*100 - 199 pages = 1 point
*200 - 299 pages = 2 points
*300 - 399 pages = 3 points
*400 - 499 pages = 4 points
*500 - 599 pages = 5 points
*600+ pages = 6 points
(maximum of 6 points per book)
* Books must be at least 200 pages long to complete descriptions.
* Buddy reads DOUBLE your points score for pages, so a 300 page book + buddy read = 6 points. 600 page book + buddy read = 12 points. (Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in our group.)
* Your team will earn 10 bonus points each time all four types of challenge within a single zone are completed. (1 Physical, 1 Mental, 1 Skill, and 1 Mystery).
* Your team will also earn bonus points each time all four types of challenge are completed in all 4 zones. (1 Physical, 1 Mental, 1 Skill, and 1 Mystery in each of the 4 zones ( Aztec, Industrial, Futuristic, and Medieval) = a total of 16 books). The number of bonus points at this stage is determined by Random.org, as you never know how many points you will earn in The Crystal Dome. Random.org may award you anywhere between 10 and 40 bonus points per visit.
* Please note - bonus points for crystals and trips to The Crystal Dome will be awarded to team totals only, not to individuals scores. Solo players will not earn these bonus points.
*Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -
Team Name:
__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page____|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points__|
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0____|_____0

Please note - we will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column. This is to allow us to see whether you are reading the minimum number of books required for the level of team that you have requested to be on. You will receive a '1' for every book over 100 pages long, or for every 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry etc, that you have read. If you consistently ask to be on a Serious or Medium team without reading the minimum number of books, you may be asked to drop down to a lower level team.

This challenge will be a team challenge. When signing up please let us know if you want to join a 'Serious' team (reading 12 books or more each), a 'Medium' team (reading 8-12 books each) or a 'Just for fun' team (reading any number of books each).
***Please only sign up for 'Serious' or 'Medium' if you are able to read the minimum number of books for that level of team, so 3 books a week for Serious, and 2 books a week for Medium.
This means that so far this year someone in Serious would have read at least 56 books, and someone in Medium would have read between 36 and 56 books.***
You may also sign up as a solo participant, and will compete against your other solo competitors, as well as those people in teams. An individual leaderboard will be published at the end of the challenge.
Teams should be posted by May 25th at the latest. If you wish to join a 'Serious' or 'Medium' team, please sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You may join as a solo player, or join a fun team (where possible) at any time.
Thank you! ☺

Answered Questions:
Q - I have a question (sorry if I missed it somewhere), can a book count for more than one challenge?
A - You can only use one book to complete one description, even if it fits more than one. So to complete 16 descriptions, you need to read 16 books ☺
Q - So you can't read a book for say, Aztec, and count it as Mental and Skill? You'd have to read a book for Mental and then another for Skill?
A - That's correct, you can only complete one description with one book ☺
Q - A question regarding the 'it must have been at least a year since you last read it'.
Eg. I started reading Vicious on June 11th 2018 and finished it on June 14th 2018, so if I wanted to use this books to complete the reread challenge, I would have to start reading it no earlier than June 14th 2019, is that correct?
A - That's correct, it has to have been a year, so if you finished June 14th 2018, you can't start 'til June 14th 2019 ☺
Q - Also, the same book can be used to complete different challenges IF read by different people right? Eg. Me and a teammate both read 'If We Were Villains' to complete both 'Read a book with an 8 letter word in the title' and 'Read a book with a skull on the cover'.
A - yes, it's fine to read the same book as a teammate but count if for a different description ☺
Q - I have a question! My audio is slowing me down this month so I don't know if I'll be able to finish all of the books I start before June. If I end up reading a book while the May challenge ends, can I still post it for the June challenge as page points? Or does it need to fit in one of the descriptions to count?
A - you can still earn page points and buddy read points for the amount of pages/% of the book you read in June, you just can't use the book to complete a description ☺
Oh, and the book doesn't need to fit a description either ☺
Q - I'm probably just overthinking things, but for the read a book which has something green on the cover challenge, does it have to be an actual item that is green? Like a tree, shirt, etc? Or as long as the color is there, like a green background, does that count?
A - there basically has to be something green on the cover, so if the title is written in green, or there is a green background, then that will count the same as if there is an object like a leaf or a cup or something which is green ☺
Q - @ sarah
for book with 8 letter word in title
suppose if iam reading The Evolution of Mara Dyer
does the word maradyer count??
A - Hi Shan, I'm afraid 'Mara Dyer' wouldn't count as an 8 letter word because it's actually two 4 letter words. You might be able to find a foreign edition version which has a 8 letter word in the title though, it might be worth having a look at the other editions ☺
Q - Does

* Read a book which has a telephone/mobile phone/cell phone on the cover. (Please check with us first if you are not sure if your book counts.)
A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - Do books with the word "the" in the title count for the physical challenge in the medieval zone?
A - You mean '* Read a book which has a word beginning with the letter 'T' in the title (for 'Tool').'? 'The' would count for that one ☺
Q - for the description book title with colour..
is it possible to read snow like ashes??
ash is nt there in the mentioned colours.
A - I'm afraid we wouldn't classify 'ash' as a colour, so unless there is another edition with a different title which does have a colour in the title, then we wouldn't be able to count that book for that description ☹
Q - Can anyone tell me how to see what a book is "tagged" or what "lists" its on?
A - Hi, if you go to a book's page on Goodreads and look on the right hand side of the page, you'll see that there is a heading 'Genres'. Under the heading there are a number of tags, and then a link to 'See top shelves...'. Click on 'See top shelves' and it will take you to another page which should look like this -

For descriptions which ask you for a specific tag, you may find it easier to find a book by looking at the shelf for that particular tag (these are linked in the main post), as a book can have many, many tags. (Tags are basically what shelves a book has been placed on. So if I made a shelf in 'my books' and called it 'pink snot', and then added the hunger games to that shelf, the hunger games would then be tagged 'pink snot'.)
For lists, if you go to a books goodreads page, scroll down the page (or search using 'ctrl+f' on a PC) and look for 'LISTS WITH THIS BOOK', click this, and it will take you to another page, where all the listopia lists that that book has been added to can be found (and there may be a lot of them), it should look something like this -

It should also tell you what number the book is on the list ☺
I hope that helps, let me know if you need anything else ☺
Q - This book wouldn't count for this challange because it's "non-fiction" correct?

A - Correct, you'd get page points +/- buddy read points, but it wouldn't count for completing a description x
Q - Does The Language of Thorns Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic (Grishaverse, #0.5 & 2.5 & 2.6) by Leigh Bardugo count as an illustrated book? It has some images, but they all seem to be along the borders.
Here are two images of the pages I found online, if it helps: https://i.imgur.com/4XgRuYa.jpg https://i.imgur.com/B91OxJw.jpg
A - Hi Marie, I will have a look at the book tomorrow as I have a kindle copy I think, but in general if a book has an illustrator listed, then we count it as illustrated, so in all likelihood that one wouldn't count for completing descriptions, just for page points ☹
A - I've tried to look at this one but my kindle app keeps crashing, and it won't load on the kindle cloud reader either. I did look at some pictures on amazon, but there were some full page pictures, and the blurb mentions that there are full page pictures too -
"This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, all of them lavishly illustrated with art that changes with each turn of the page, culminating in six stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves. "
so we would have to count this one as illustrated unfortunately, so you wouldn't be able to complete a description using it ☹
Q - For the physical copy, do we have to own it? and can we use one book for multiple zones, Aztec, industrial ect.. or multiple categories or requirements within one zone, physical mental ect. requirements within those parts.
A - *It doesn't matter if you own it, as long as it's a physical copy, so if you've borrowed a copy from the library or something, that's fine.
*You can only use one book to complete one description, no matter how many descriptions it might fit. So to complete 16 descriptions, you/your team would need to read 16 books.
Q - also for the industrial zone, mystery for the air part what of it's backwards since it's still together?
A - For descriptions where you're asked for a certain word, like 'air', letters must appear next to each other in order as 'air', if they are in any other order, such as backwards as 'ria', then they will not count.
Q - For the trilogy can it be any book in the trilogy or does it have to be the 2nd book, I've saw people say both.
A - For 'Aztec Zone - Mystery - * Read a book which is part of a trilogy.'
It can be any book, as long as it is one of the three main books in the trilogy,
(there is another description though, for 'Futuristic Zone - Skill - * Read a book which is part of a series, but isn't the first or last book.' which is possibly the one where people are talking about not being able to read the first book though, so that might be why people are saying both ☺)
Q - So for each zone there are 16 descriptions and the team will get a point for each description completed right? So does that mean if two people in the team complete the same description in the same zone but with different books, would the team get both the points for the description or only one point for it being completed? More simply can more then one person complete the same description as long as it's different books? also for the Buddy reading, does that mean we have to use the book to for different descriptions?
A - Basically, if a description is completed, then it will be marked off on the team's scoreboard, so if your team completes 4 Aztec Mystery descriptions, then it will show up like this -
Zone_____|__AZTEC____||_INDUSTRIAL||_FUTURISTIC||__MEDIEVAL__|
Task_____|Ph|Me|Sk|My||Ph|Me|Sk|My||Ph|Me|Sk|My||Ph|Me|Sk|My||
Complete:|_0|_0|_0|_4||_0|_0|_0|_0||_0|_0|_0|_0||_0|_0|_0|_0|
There is nothing to stop you or your team from completing the same description multiple times, you'll just increase the number on your scoreboard, you will obviously get more bonus points if you spread them out though ☺
There is nothing against using the same book for the same description either, as long as it's a different member of the team reading it each time. So 5 of you could read the same book, and count it for the same description if you wanted to ☺
You can also use the same book for the same description if you are buddy reading, it's up to the team which description to use for which book ☺
You will only earn bonus points for completing 4 descriptions from the 4 different areas of each zone though, so for instance 1 Physical, 1 Mental, 1 Skill, and 1 Mystery from the Aztec zone, so it's best to try and spread the books out if they count for more than one description x
Q - Would

A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - Can the topic stating having a planet in the title or author's name be within the word?

A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - 1. For tasks relating to page counts does it have to be the page count of the edition you read or can it be any edition?
2. For tasks that say or rather than and do all of the letters for the task have to be in either the title, author or series name?
(For tasks like this Read a book which has the letters 'G', 'R', 'I', and 'D' in the title or author's name do ALL of the letters have to be in the title name or the authors name not split between both areas?)
A - * For page counts, it is fine to use one page count to complete the challenge, and another page count to earn page points, just be sure to link to which editions you are using when you post ☺
* For descriptions where you have to find specific letters, you can use the title and the author's name, (Letters can appear in any order, and may be spread over the title and author's name, as long as all 4 appear at least once.). So for 'G', 'R', 'I', and 'D', you could have the R and the D in the title, and the I and the G in the author's name, and that would be fine ☺
Q - Hey Sarah, I just wanna make sure I understand a rule correctly:
I have a couple non-fiction books I was planning to read for research this month. If I read the rules correctly, as long as they're over 200pgs they can count for page points, but not descriptions, correct?
A - Hi, non-fiction books over 100 pages long can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, but you can't complete descriptions using them ☺

Answered Questions #2:
Q - sarah, what are the rules regarding books that we started reading less than a year ago, but put down? can we start that book over and use it for the challenge?
A - if it's a book that you started reading, but didn't finish reading, then you have two options -
1st option - carry on reading from where you got up to, and claim points for the number of pages read in June only,
2nd option - restart the book again from the beginning, and earn page points +/- buddy read points, and complete a description using the book,
Just let us know which option you're choosing when you post your review ☺
Q - Hi Sarah, just a question:
Would In the Darkness count for "read a book which has the word Dark in the title" ?
A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - Can I use
for any category? I was mostly concerned if I'd come under illustrated books or something.
A - I checked the book just to make sure, and the copyright page says this -
'Names: Kaufman, Amie, author. | Kristoff, Jay, author. | Lu, Marie, illustrator.'
There are also several other copyrights for blueprints and insignias and things, so we would have to classify this book as illustrated. I will add the series to the list of books we classify as illustrated on the main rules thread.
If you still want to read this one you'll get +2 page points +/-2 buddy read points x
Q - Can
Be used for
Read a book which has the letter 'C' in the title or author's name (for Clues). (Eg: Carry On.)
It doesn’t say that c has to be at the start of the word, but the examples show it at the start. So thought I would check first.
A - Hi, the 'C' can be anywhere in the title or author's name, so Hitched: Volume Three would be fine ☺
Q - And do alternate titles count for
Read a book which has 5 words in the title. (We will accept 'A', 'I', or a number as a word, but any words after a colon ':' will not count.) (Eg: I Want It That Way)
So for example
A - * Foreign editions with different titles may be used to complete descriptions as long as they are made up of recognisable English letters. Please link to the edition you are using when posting your review.
So Al final mueren los dos would count as a title with 5 words in it ☺
Q - Hey Sarah! I got an arc of
at BEA and it has waaay more pages than any of the editions reported. When checking my physical copy, it says it has around 650 pages when the highest reported on goodreads so far is in the 400s. What can I do?
A - Hi Meaghan, we wouldn't usually take a page count from an ARC edition of a book when the page count for the soon-to-be-published edition is available, as ARCs can have larger fonts, smaller pages, bits repeated, extra material from the publisher etc. So really we'd just go with the page count on Goodreads or Amazon x
Q - Hey, Sarah! For Medieval Physical, would The Muse count for a title that begins with the letter 't'?
A - Do you mean Industrial skill -
* Read a book with a title starting with the letter 'T' (for Turn) (Titles starting with 'The' are fine for this description.)
Or Medieval Physical -
* Read a book which has a word beginning with the letter 'T' in the title (for 'Tool')
Although it doesn't really matter, either way, 'The' is fine for title starting with T, or word starting with T ☺
Q -
Just want to verify if this works for a skull on the cover?
A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - Hey Sarah, would you accept Coldhearted Boss for book with shape in the title (heart)?
A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - Sarah, can I count the last two stories in
? I read the other stories as they came out and, since these last two came out this month, I read them now. Combined they have around 120 pages.
A - Yes, that's fine, just let me know how many pages you've read when you post your review ☺
Q - Do the Just For Fun teams not get to take trips to the dome or get crystals?
A - Sarah hasn't added the crystal or dome sections until a team has gotten a crystal :)
A - Amanda's right, fun teams are able to earn crystals and trips to the crystal dome, but I haven't been adding the scores for that part until at least one of the teams has earned a crystal. It just seemed a bit pointless when nobody had earned a crystal yet x
Q - Would The
count as one eye and one hand on the cover?
A - I'm afraid that wouldn't count because you can't really see his hand properly ☹
Q - This one would
work for one eye and one hand on the cover right?
A - Yes, that's fine ☺
Q - Would
count for one hand and one eye on the cover?
A - It will using one of these editions -
☺
Q - Is
an illustrated book? I didn't see any mention of it, but I know the authors' previous series is so I want to make sure.
A - We don't count that one as illustrated, no ☺
Q - What happenes if I joined a BR but my buddy didn't join? Will it count me the br points and if not, can I use the comments in the thread as status updates or should I write a separate review?
A - your buddy read will still count if you had a buddy when the buddy read was planned. Your comments on the thread must be different to your status updates though, if they're the same then we won't be able to give you the buddy read points x
Q - So people can put comments in the buddy read thread and not have a buddy? Am I reading that right?
A - This only applies when a buddy hasn't turned up. If we believe someone is starting threads and claiming buddy read points when they never had a buddy to begin with, then it's one warning, and then they're banned from taking part in the challenges for 6 months x
Q - For the tasks involving something on the cover, am I right in thinking that you can use another edition than the one you're reading, and then you can use another edition for page points?
A - you can use a different edition to complete the description, just link to the edition you're using for the cover (unless it's the main edition), and then link an edition for pages as normal ☺
Q - Quick Question: I'm starting Bright Lights, Dark Nights by Stephen Emond, and it has pictures in it. I can only count it for page points, right?
A - you're right, you'll only be able to claim page points, you won't be able to complete a description using it. You'll also only get 1 point per 300 pages x
Q - sarah, would
count for the Industrial Mystery prompt: "Read a book which has a telephone/mobile phone/cell phone on the cover"?. there are cell phones on the side but they're very small.
A - they could be cell phones, but it's not really clear as they could be notepads, or cameras, or microphones, so I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to count it as cell phones on the cover ☹
Q - Would this count for skull on cover? There appears to be small skulls in the decorative pattern above the title.
A - they do look like skulls, so that's fine ☺
Q -
is classified as both YA and middle school. It has YA as the first tag. Would this be able to be used for a description?
A - Yes, it's tagged Young Adult more times than it's tagged Middle-Grade, so we would count it as Young Adult ☺
Q -
is this book tagged sci-fi?..i am nt sure hw to do it.
A - it is tagged 'Sci-Fi', but it needs to be tagged 'Sci-Fi' within the top twenty tags, which it isn't unfortunately.
To look for the tags, go to the books page on Goodreads and look on the right side of the page where it says 'Genres'. If you look down the list under 'Genres', you should see a link which says 'See top shelves...'. If you click that it will bring up the full list of tags for that book ☺

Marie wrote: "Medium, please! And I have a question (sorry if I missed it somewhere), can a book count for more than one challenge?"
You can only use one book to complete one description, even if it fits more than one. So to complete 16 descriptions, you need to read 16 books ☺
You can only use one book to complete one description, even if it fits more than one. So to complete 16 descriptions, you need to read 16 books ☺

And I have lots of vacation next month and my beach reads ready, so I'm gonna shoot for Medium.

Eg. I started reading Vicious on June 11th 2018 and finished it on June 14th 2018, so if I wanted to use this books to complete the reread challenge, I would have to start reading it no earlier than June 14th 2019, is that correct?
Also, the same book can be used to complete different challenges IF read by different people right? Eg. Me and a teammate both read 'If We Were Villains' to complete both 'Read a book with an 8 letter word in the title' and 'Read a book with a skull on the cover'.

All added ☺
For those people who have asked to be on teams with specific people, I will do my best ☺

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from June 1st 2019 to June 30th 2019. Results will be announced on July 1st 2019.
To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by earning crystals in The Crystal Maze.
You may also choose to take on The Crystal Maze as a solo participant ☺
