Book: The Captain's Bluestocking Mistress by Erica Ridley

Read: 6/4
Rating: 3 ★'s
Review: I liked it well enough. It wasn't spectacular. I found it lacked the humour that the first book had. I did like the heroine better than the hero. War Hero returned and couldn't cope with the horrors and the heroine was a bluestocking who was past her shelf-life. It's an easy read. Would definitely recommend it.

Review: An easy read. Though I preferred the Hot FBI partner for the heroine than who she chose....lol... The murder wasn't even a murder so needless to say I'm disappointed. The heroine is an FBI agent who is in hiding but the author couldn't convince me of it. Can't complain too much as this was a freebie.

Book Read: Things My Son Needs to Know about the World | Fredrik Bachman
Pages: 208
Date Read: 04-Jun-2019
Rating: ★★★★
How it Fits the Shelf: Library Loan
Review:
Fredrik Bachman very rarely disappoints - and when he writes non-fiction while he is talking to his infant baby boy, a riot ensues! His penmanship is so smooth, his dialogue so tongue-in-cheek, that you'd find it hard-pressed to not regale in the narrative. Boy, if Fredrik is half the father as he portrays himself, I worry for the baby! LOL! Certain compliments to the translator as well - because if this book is THIS funny in English, I can only imagine what madness it'd be in its original Swedish form!

Review: This series is a bit of an odd ball for me. Usually if I'm going to read a long series, I need to love the main character. I'm actually not very excited by Maisie Dobbs. What I enjoy are the stories of the people she's investigating, the remnants and fall out of the war that is still recent history at the time of the story. This installment in the series deals with the difficulty between two parents, one who believes his son is dead, the other convinced he survived the war, and the promise she imposes on her husband on her death bed to solve the mystery once and for all. The history of the family which Maisie digs up mirrors LGBT issues still relevant today. It was an emotional ride, but not overly so, and kept you guessing. For me, that's the perfect combination for a mystery novel.

Wow, this wasn't a fun book to read because of the events our main character goes through, but it is a good book to read as we watch her go through horrible tragedies and keep her iron spine in spite of it. I also love seeing such an unapologetic, strong, proud woman deal with the hard headed men of the army and showing them she doesn't back down. I also love her relationships with the women around her. As she realizes even those traditional women she originally thought of as weak have a heart of gold and a core of steel!

Book Read: The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue | Mackenzi Lee
Pages: 513
Date Read: 07-Jun-2019
Rating: ★★★.5
How it Fits the Shelf: MPG - Historical (2,999 users)
Review:
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue takes place before the French revolution, with Henry Montague leading the story for us. I liked a lot of things about this novel. Mackenzi Lee paces the plot super well, such that I always wanted to know what would happen next. Amidst a literary landscape filled with insta-love and/or unhealthy relationships, I found Monty and Percy's connection adorable, sexy, and believable. Lee shows enough of their backstory and their current chemistry to make readers root for them. I also appreciated how she addressed issues of white privilege, sexism, abuse, and stigma surrounding illness within this book. I sense that I would give this book five stars instead of four if Lee had gone a little deeper, either with Monty's character or some of the social justice topics. Monty is pretty awful throughout the book, in that he makes ignorant comments and lacks the ability to communicate his emotions. This latter fault drives a lot of the conflict in his relationship with Percy. Thus, I wish we could have seen more of Monty's process in working through his privileges, his past ignorant remarks, his issues with communication, etc. I get that Lee may have spent that time more on the adventure-based aspects of the plot, though. Overall, a quick and enjoyable read.

Review
Elizabeth's just returned home after being abroad in Europe to her younger Diana and mother. Together the girls adventure out into society among the other New York Elites enjoying parties dancing till dawn. With the loss of their father, it's up to Elizabeth to find a husband with some money so that her sister and mother are taken care of. She's no the only one on a mission this season Penelope is determined to have her crush as her future husband. Henry is hoping to enjoy his time with the Elite but his father has decided it's time to settle down and marry.
As the first party rolls to an end, it becomes clear that Henry's father has a plan which will solve both Elizabeth's problems and ensure he won't be any more trouble for his father. The only drawback is that Elizabeth isn't in love with Henry but with the carriage boy who she's grown up with. Will, they just follow what their parents and the rest of the elite deem a perfect match or will they follow their hearts.
First off I really liked Elizabeth I found her easy to connect she's clearly willing to do what it takes to protect her family even if it means not getting the happy ever after she wants. Her sister may be my favorite, after all, she is a bookworm. I honestly wasn't sure about Henry but I think he has his own redeeming qualities as the book progresses.
I've had this one on my kindle for years but never seemed to get around to it. I haven't been reading much in the historical genre recently but the story captured my attention right from the start. It reminds me a lot of a historical gossip girl, they all have their own secrets that they carry with their own agendas they are intent on getting. As the book progressed the story just kept getting better and I wanted to know how it was going to play out. I had characters that I loved as well as characters I couldn't wait to fall into the river. I'm curious to see how the series will end. Highly recommend for fans of Gossip girl looking for a historical twist.

Book: Rayne & Delilah's Midnite Matinee
Pages: 400
Date read: 6/8/19
Rating ★★★★★
How it fits: checked out from the library
This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019! The summary sounded great, the title was cool, the title was intriguing! Just, everything about it. Yes!
I loved Delia so much. Josie was cool and Lawson was adorable and good and wholesome but I just totally associated with Delia. I also grew up in a trailer park with a manic depressive mom (who later left when I was 7/8 years old) and now I struggle with my own issues with depression and abandonment issues. So all of her feelings and anxiety and churned up feelings were not only written accurately but also so relatable! I was crying by the end and I loved this so much!
