Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments I was sure we had done ELO before but looks like I was mistaken. No problem though, even if we have, there are plenty of songs to go round.

They shouldn't need any introduction, which is just as well as I have no idea what to say apart from pointing out the fact that, like most people here I guess, they always were a part of the soundtrack to our younger days, like it or not.

A stack of albums to choose from, not going to count them all but I am hoping for a good turn out this time.

Noms as ever close at 10pm Sunday evening, and please don't forget your link, and as important, come back to vote after Sunday night.

Off we go.....

Val H. | 22189 comments What a miserable bunch of party poopers you lot are! We hardly ever get any pop music on here. God forbid something should be bright and cheerful and actually have a tune you can hum or whistle. ABBA, The Beach Boys, Macca have all been binned and doubtless The Beatles and the BeeGees can join them. For the record, I loved The Move, still love ELO and anything Jeff Lynne has a part in (Travelling Wilburys anyone?) is always worth a listen in my not so humble opinion. I suppose it'll be back to Phish and Can sound-alikes in the weeks ahead. Rant over.

message 14: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments yes, val, i am a fully paid up pooper, and i do enjoy the bright and breezy, less so the cans of phish. i do not see jeff lynne/elo as the former, much closer to the latter, and the less said about the travelling dangleberries the better! it's mibbe pop, because they sold a lot of singles, and if it is then it's pop with pretentions (for me). i defend my right to poop!

Hey Val. Some of our fellow posters seem to think of themselves as music connoisseurs, slagging off anything that doesn't come up to their 'standards'.

message 16: by Tim (new)

Tim Franklin | 10964 comments I've got a lot of time for E.LO.'s earlier stuff (up to and including Out Of The Blue), but they got a bit patchy after that IMVHO. 😎

What I meant, Val, was that some of these songs formed the soundtrack of a particularly unhappy period in my life.

I don't like ELO, just like I don't like the Alan Parsons Project or Wishbone Ash, but I would usually just stay out of the nominations on that basis. ELO are a different matter, as their New World Record/Out of the Blue/Discovery period stuff, in particular, genuinely does bring back unpleasant memories.

Brass Neck | 3979 comments A power pop chap who records as Bleu did an affectionate pastiche album, Alpacas Orgling, under the monicker L.E.O. (see what he did there? Genius, eh?) to which I'm more partial than the original band. Lend an ear;

I understand completely Gordon. It's amazing the power of music to transport you to a particular time/place. Even if the memories evoked are good ones, it still has to be the right time for you to revisit them. Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends" was a seminal album for me in my late teens and even though it's associated with some good people and times, it took me a long time to be able to play it again. And I only have to hear the Bee Gees' "Massachusetts" to be right back in the middle of the breakdown of my parents' marriage. "New World Record" takes me back to a very happy and hopeful time in my life.

I have the option to go and see Fairport Convention this week. I haven't seen them since about 1995. Question is, the tickets are a bit pricey, are they worth seeing after all this time? I can sort of guess Tech's answer to that one :-)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I saw Fairport Convention in 2008. The Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Chris Leslie, Ric Sanders Gerry Conway line-up. They were superb, especially when Leslie & Sanders doubled up on fiddle (not as indecent as it sounds). I think it's the same line-up now.

Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments 11 voters for the 12 noms this week, not bad at all.

The gold belongs this week to Val, with her nom, Livin' Thing. A couple of pints behind, bagging the silver, Mr Blue Sky himself, Sera 69. And we have a bronze for Tim with 10538 Overture.

I always thought that, as far as pop bands go, ELO have to be one of the better ones, I even picked up two or three of their CDs along the way. Enjoyed that one.
