linzie | 35 comments I have so many books on my tbr and I don’t know which ones to read first. I need help!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Out of the ones I have read, I would suggest That was Then, This is Now or One of us is Lying for a stand alone. Unless you want to go all in and read Harry Potter.

Katie.dorny (katiedorny) | 35 comments I would suggest either the hate you give or the gentleman’s guide, both amazing books! X

Julia | 117 comments I suggest finishing the Harry Potter series, but if you like them, maybe skip Cursed Child. As a die-hard fan myself, I personally did not enjoy it as an addition to the series. But that's just me!

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I really like Lord of the Flies. It's a really dark take on humanity, but the symbolism is very well done.

It isn't on your list, but I always recommend The Princess Bride. It's funny, bizarre, quirky, dramatic, and memorable. :)

linzie | 35 comments I read the first two Harry Potter books, but they honestly weren’t my favorite. Do they get better as the series goes on?

message 6: by Rae (new)

Rae | 6 comments i think they do, tbh. at least, they get darker and more morally complex. but the later books are also really long, so they drag on a little,

hope that helps! :)

Cendaquenta Absolutely Circe, I loved it so much!
The Hate U Give is a modern classic, must-read.

message 9: by dolly (new)

'Tis not just you.

Karin From your want to read shelf I recommend the following:

The Apology, Phaedo and Crito of Plato; The Golden Sayings of Epictetus; The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius

A Man Called Ove

The Sun Is Also a Star

I ditched Harry Potter after about 3 or 4 books.

Much. I know people who gave up after the first book or two, and it saddens me to hear. Finish the series. I think you'll be very happy you did.

LOL you didn't enjoy Cursed Child either, huh?

Agreed. The Harry Potter books get so much more complex past the first few. For instance, currently my favourite is book five (where we meet one of my favourite characters!). One aspect that I really enjoyed was the multiple layers of conflict; we have man vs. man in a few cases, with Harry facing his enemies. We have man vs. society because the government opposes Harry. We have man vs. fate as well, and it is packed with man vs. self conflict.

The Final Empire and The Amulet of Samarkand are among my most favorite books.

The Broken Girls and The Casual Vacancy were quite good, though many don’t like Casual Vacancy. It’s definitely not YA.

I agree The Final Empire is amazing. I also loved Cinder and The Book Thief

message 23: by linzie (new)

linzie | 35 comments We Were Liars and The Book Thief. WWL wasn’t my favorite book, but the writing style was really unique and cool. Hope that helps! :)

I looked at much of your list but not all. In this order, I recommend

GONE GIRL
YOU
THE LOVELY BONES

ETA: I noticed you have some duplicates. Click "check for duplicates" under "settings" when you're looking at your list to delete these in one go.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 19 comments I did a compare and the books that you haven't read on your own shelf that I have gave 5 stars to are :

Mistborn
The Graveyard Book &
Paper Towns

message 26: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (manka23) | 21 comments It's funny that a lot of you recommend Mistborn or the Final Empire because that was my last 5 star read! I have been having a hard time having anything come anywhere close after finishing it!!

I have actually read The Broken Girls and We Were Liars was a recent read of mine.

So this is the list of books that I own that you guys have recommended so far:
The Amulet of Samarkand
Cinder
The Book Thief
You
The Lovely Bones
The Graveyard Book
Paper Towns
(I don't actually have a copy of Gone Girl, I can't find it unfortunately.)

As for the advice on duplicates, THANK YOU SO MUCH! It drives me insane.
