Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Welcome Space Opera Romance Lovers!

Okay ... one of my goals here is to stop ghettoizing the various sub-sub-genres of Sci-Fi Space Opera with a snooty 'that's not REAL science fiction' and create ways for readers to find exactly the kinds of great Space Opera books they like. If Fantasy, Mystery, and Literary Fiction get their own Amazon sub-sub-categories, than why not us? NO MORE GHETTOS!!!

I am in the process of setting up the following Listopias. As I do, I'll post the links here. What I need help from YOU guys doing is to read the criteria very carefully and then, if you know of a book that is an exact fit, add it. These Listopias are highly searchable by Google, and maybe if we make things really, really easy for Papa Bezos to add new sub-categories of Sci-Fi and Space Opera, maybe we'll be able to get them to do it.

[*Either that or they'll send me a nasty email telling me to stop making lists*]

Okay ... here's what I've created:

Space Opera With Female Protagonists and a Bit of Romance - This is for an otherwise 'normal' Space Opera tale which has a bit of a romantic element. The focus of the story is the space element and the romance is a side-dish. In other words, it doesn't have so many 'icky girl cooties' that men will refuse to read it. List is HERE: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

Space Opera Romance - this is a romance story with a hefty side-order of Space Opera. The focus is on the HEA. I don't maintain this list, so be careful to follow the Listopia owner's criteria. List is HERE: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

Here are the list manager's criteria: "Please remember when adding books to this list, we are looking for SPACE OPERA, not general Science Fiction Romance - there is a difference. Space Opera usually has larger themes going on than the love story. While the love story can be central, there are often explorations of human nature. The hero's journey should be in play, and there are more often than not metaphysical explorations as well. (I.E. what is our place in the universe? existential questions, the force, destiny, etc). On the flip-side, we are not looking for general or military Space Opera - we are looking for Space Opera books with a central focus on Romance and character development."

Space Opera Erotic Romance - this is an erotic romance story with a hefty side-order of Space Opera. Can include M/F, M/M, F/F, BDSM, alien/human, polyamory, etc so long as the focus still remains on the HEA. The list is HERE: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

Okay everybody ... I need YOUR HELP ... let's go fill out those lists so we can all help each other find the exact kinds of stories that we like to read! And if you've read these stories and enjoyed them, give them an upvote!

Ever read the Space Captain Smith books? That pretty much sums up the romance the titular captain has with his beloved.

Steph Bennion (stephbennion) | 303 comments I recently read Faring Soul by Tracy Cooper-Posey (disclaimer: it's in the ebook bundle Sci-fi July Fever Fun: An 11 novels box set, which also includes one of my own) - and it was a cracking read. I haven't written up my review as yet, but it reminded me of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - though I thought Cooper-Posey's book was far better - it also brought back strong memories of Iain M. Banks' Against a Dark Background. I hope to read the other books in the series.
