I am slow reader, especially when it comes to those verbose writers. I make it a point to not gloss over terminology so I keep an online dictionary handy. Based on what others have been saying, this seems like a fast-moving read. As long as this doesn't read like a Henry James novel, sign me up for a buddy read.

I spent my Memorial Day afternoon picking up a brand new Scribner paperback edition, and I'm ready to go! I don't usually buy books, but I didn't want to worry about the pesky library fines. Looking forward to my buddy.

message 10: by Rawan (new)

Rawan Let's buddy up!

message 11: by Sadie (new)

Sadie (sadiethelady) | 12 comments This is so awesome! I like the idea of reading with someone, sharing thoughts and ideas. I am excited about getting started!

message 12: by Arshad (new)

Lorna (rogue_librarian) | 4 comments I'd like a buddy! This book has been on my list for a long time; I'm excited to finally get to it.

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna (anna444) No idea what a buddy read is really but willing to try. I've read the book a few times but not recently - maybe 10 years ago.

message 15: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn (jocgtz) | 2 comments Is this buddy read thing an alternative to everyone just reading and chatting along as a big group? I'm new so I'm a bit confused, I thought it was a group read.

If the buddy system is how you guys commonly operate, I'm down for that. If age is a factor for partnering up I'm 27 but don't feel any preference with age or gender for pairing up.

message 16: by Juzie Quinn (new)

Juzie Quinn Moore (juziepoo) | 3 comments yes, im wondering about the buddy-ing up proposal

message 17: by Juzie Quinn (new)

Juzie Quinn Moore (juziepoo) | 3 comments i also think that we should try to read the girl with a pearl earring, i know that it's a small book and a little newer but...idk i just think it would be fun to read and buddy up with, i read it and i wish i had someone to discuss it with. open to reading it again.

message 18: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Ward (sward7) | 114 comments The group offers random Buddy Reads, but this particular one is to read Gone With the Wind with a randomly assigned buddy. You two figure out and decide exactly what works for the two of you: texts, IMs, FB, or any other form of communication. You can create a schedule (ck in once a week, daily messages, scheduled chats- whatever the two of you want.) And then individually contributing to the whole group discussion here.

I’ll assign buddies on Friday evening.

Hunter | 6 comments I'd like to join. Sounds like fun.

message 20: by Sadie (new)

Sylvia Ward (sward7) | 114 comments Here are the 'Buddies' for the June/July BOTM - Gone with the Wind:
Anna and Jenny
Arshad and Jocelyn
Hunter and Jackie
Tom and Marsha
Sadie and Talib
Rawan and Jamila
Avie and La Tonya
Kathleen and Annette
Vicki and Lorna
Debbie and Daphne
Kirsten and Julianna
Katie and Sylvia
Kris and Autumn
Daniel, Vera, and Nikita (students in exams)

You can message your buddy directly by clicking on his/her name in this comment thread and sending a message. It is 100% up to the two (three) of you to determine how you will 'discuss' the reading of this 1,000 page classic.

Here are some thoughts:
1. Decide on the best way to communicate (GR message, facebook, text, Instant Message, email, Instagram, or other). Trade contact info.
2. Decide on how often you would like to connect: one specific day a week, after reaching a specific page number, whenever you have something to share.
3. Introduce yourselves and get to know each other. Life long friends are made by random pairings like this.
4. Enjoy! No pressure - just share the experience of venturing into a part of American history along with another 'buddy.'
5. Super important! (I saved the best for last...) Don't forget to share comments with the entire group using the Discussion threads on Goodreads 'Old Books, New Readers.'

(I will send messages to each buddy pair to make sure you are able to connect.)

Enjoy! And happy reading! I'm super excited to crack open my book and start reading tomorrow!

Connie, if we get a new person, I'll buddy you with him/her. If not, I'll add you to make a group of 3. Look for a message.

Hi Autumn,
I am new to this format of book club reading. I do read a lot and a fair amount of suggestions come from Goodreads but I just do not usually use this sort of reading group.
Sylvia asked if I would be interested in buddying up with you I would love to if you wish let me know how you prefer to contact for discussion.
I read Gone with the Wind before but decades ago. I enjoy reading about 100 pages a day although I’m currently having some neck and back issues so may depend on how things are feeling.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
