Ed, I saw your post on this book and it looked I could relate. Mees Vicky has the double culture shock of not only Bahrain and that surreal culture of the super wealthy, ultra modern, seething with a very traditional and ancient culture in dress, manners, religion etc.. but also had to adjust to the American school. We had the double culture shock of adjusting to Qatar and putting our kids in a British school, about a year after she left the Middle East. Our expectations weren’t quite like hers. We had been exposed to camels, and elephants and snake charmers and Brahman Bulls up close and personal in our time in India and we even got to ride the first two on several occasions! Also we had taken some R&R in Dubai and Doha when we got a hankering for beef! (Smile). I really enjoyed reading the book and could laugh at so many of her experiences. Fortunately we didn’t have to be personally affected by the tragic results of Arab Spring as Qatar didn’t have the unrest.

ahh...Glad you enjoyed it...it was a fun read. Also check out Stranded in the Seychelles...also English folks...in this case two women friends in their 20s....teaching English in the Seychelles..... some funny stuff....reminded me of Edina and Patsy from Ab Fab.
