D.L. | 16 comments I haven't had the chance to participate in a group discussion in ages & ages, but I'm ready now. I just got the book from my library's ebook page.

This is my first time reading Sherlock Holmes though I've seen a ton of movies (it seems there's so many) about the guy. I like Robert Downey Jr. in the role although it's, I take it, a far less traditional interpretation of the stoic character. I also like Basil Rathbone in the role.

Annelies I'm excited to read this for the first time. After watching the BBC show of Sherlock Holmes, the movies with Robert Downey Jr. and the alternative version Elementary, i'm ready to read the original.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) I have an audio version narrated by Stephen Fry, so I am super excited to try it out.

I bet it will be amazing with Stephen Fry - he as the perfect voice for it!!

I've never read any of the original stories before but really enjoy the different adaptations. So, I'm looking forward to getting stuck in. Hopefully I will enjoy it - not sure what to expect!

Betsy | 930 comments Glad to hear you're able to join in the discussion, Daph, after some time!

It's the type of story where there are adaptions galore, and yet the original I'm not too clear about. I'm looking forward to seeing how Sherlock is actually presented, and how prevalent certain characteristic traits are...

And hearing that Stephen Fry narrates the audiobook makes me even more excited!

Thanks. I am really excited to start it, hopefully tonight.

Shelley This will be a reread for me. I first read this, and a few other Sherlock Holmes stories, several years ago. This was after watching the various Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. It cracked me up at times as I could just hear some of Holmes' comments in Downey's voice or see Downing acting out Holmes' antics.

Since then, my daughter hooked our entire family on the Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Sadly, this may have spoiled Doyle's works for me. I'm about half way through A Study in Scarlett. While I have no real complaints, I'm not enjoying it as much as I did the first time.

Mary-Faith | 85 comments This is my first time reading A Study in Scarlet. I’ve read some of the Sherlock Holmes short stories before (or perhaps they were condensed versions of the novels...?) for school and enjoyed them, so I’m looking forward to reading this! I think the only Holmes adaptation I’ve seen is the one with RDJ, and I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of it, but I know it was very different from the books. Anyways, very excited about this!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) | 689 comments Although I read this several times as a kid, I never have as an adult. Plus, I have the Stephen Fry audiobook! I'm so excited to begin!

Brandi | 115 comments Like many of you, I’ve seen the BBC Sherlock, watched the Robert Downey Jr movies, and seen other adaptations. I’ve never read the original. Having loved the BBC show and the RDJ movies though, I’m rather excited to get this one started. I was talking to my boyfriend about how I was going to start it, and ever the pessimist, he told me to be prepared to be disappointed. He said that in the era of so much true crime and modern murder mysteries, Arthur Conan Doyle can be disappointing.

Regardless, I’m still excited. Can’t wait to see how it unfolds and lives up to the modern interpretations.

Your boyfriend may be right. The people in the spoiler thread who had previously watched TV adaptations mostly reported feeling disappointed. The people who had not been previously exposed to the story had no such feelings. The less expectations you have, the better your experience will be!

Regarding the movie versions: I recently read the complete set of Sherlock Holmes stories for the first time (yes, that was a 9-month endeavor). It has been a while since I saw the Downey Jr film versions, and I'm wondering if there were a lot of Easter Eggs or references to the books in those films that I might not have noticed when I first watched them.
