Gravity’s Rainbow
question
Do you read Reader's Companion books before, after, or during your reading of the book?

There are a few books I want to read a "Reader's Companion to" (or "Reader's Guide to") along with. The really tough books like Grvity's Rainbow, Ulysses, Infinite Jest, etc.
But I soon plan to read GR. So the companion book I want to read: A Gravity's Rainbow Companion: Sources and Contexts for Pynchon's Novel.
I'm not sure when to read the "Reader's Companion" though. Before, after, or during reading the actual book. I don't want to read any spoilers, but I also want my comprehension of the book enhanced the first time around, if I can help it.
When do you tend to read "Reader's Companion" books?
