Kate S | 6459 comments Challenges are great because they help introduce me to new genres and authors, but they rarely allow time for developing a deeper relationship with particular authors.

Find an author that you read for the first time in the last year (June 1, 2018 - May 31, 2019). Read an additional book by that author. You may not use this task for combos.

Please post any questions about task 20.8 in this thread.

Bea I read so many books. Is there a way to find authors I have only read once? GR removed the author list last year.

I guess I could sort my READ shelf and look for single authors and then the year read...but that shelf has 1699 books on it!

Kate S | 6459 comments The important part of this task is new-ish author. Someone you first read since June 2018. You can have read more than one book by the author.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14233 comments I sorted my Read shelf by date read with the most recent at the top. If I questioned whether this was a *first* read by an author, I searched my shelves for the author name to be sure.

Bea Thanks, everyone. I guess I just panicked a bit. Figured it out and have an author.

Lynn (lynnsreads) When I looked at my read books I sorted by most recently read and then went by memory. I wrote down a list of new authors in the last year. Then I sorted by authors and checked to make sure there weren't books listed that were too old. I was surprised to find that I had read 29 new authors in that twelve month period.

finally, I cross-checked by my want-to-read shelf and had a quick list of about ten books that I had marked to read by recently read authors.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5279 comments I haven't finished looking for my author(s) yet, but I missed Iris Murdoch by a month. I finished (and loved) my first book of hers in May 2018!

As Charlie Brown used to say "Arrrrrggh!"

At the very least, anything you read by her will fit 20.1.

I had that exact same problem!

LOL....I checked that out too! I read my first Bond a little before that...and was already planning Moonraker for a different task.
I, too, have been surprised at how much I enjoy the books. The films not so much.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14233 comments I started 2 series in the Winter season by authors I had not read before - Cazalet Chronicles and Lanny Budd. I'd like to finish up Cazalet. I'm not sure with all the others I want to get to whether another in the Lanny Budd series will happen or not.

I do have some of her books in my plan, but I was thinking of the amount of combos I could get putting one in this slot if I could;) -- Assuming that we can get combo points for books claimed for the task, just not use it to apply a combo to another task.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14233 comments You can't claim a book for another task and claim this one for a combo. So, yes, your Iris Murdoch's are going to get short-changed a combo by not being able to claim them here.

I love the planning and quest for points, but, in the end, it comes down to the books and I did love my intro to Iris Murdoch, The Sea, The Sea, and want to read more. Needless to say, I'm excited about this season!

My first Iris Murdoch was The Bell...which I read not that long ago either...and I loved it.

Joanna (walker) | 2293 comments This is the perfect place for me to put The Obelisk Gate! I read the first in the trilogy last season and really wanted to find a spot for the second book this season.

I have it penciled in, too!

Coralie | 2757 comments I read a short story by Rebecca Roanhorse earlier this year. Is that enough for me to claim Trail of Lightning for this task?

Yes. The task, as worded, does not say you had to have read a *book* by the author, just that you had read the author for the first time during the stated time period.
