Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Woohoo! Great job! Don't think I'll be finishing mine today... 930 pages in one day is not in the cards for me with offspring at home because exams are about over, lol.

Indeed. Sometimes it's even nice not to have pairs everywhere. It's a shame when it becomes forced with zero chemistry just for the sake of having a love interest. Oh well, the main thing is that you enjoyed the book, the story etc :-)

That's a shame, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. I quite liked their last trilogy

Judy | 4065 comments The thing with everyone being paired up was basically the one thing I didn't much like about the book either - especially cause this is book 1 of who knows how many! And also because during like the first half, I kept thinking how fun it was that you could ship everyone with bascially everyone else and then suddenly the couples were set...

message 205: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments I got 130 pages into Fingersmith yesterday and as expected, it's a pretty slow read. I'm enjoying it though! Very curious to see where it's going to head.

I think I'm also going to pick up The Names They Gave Us to motivate myself cause that'll be much quicker to get through.

Sounds good, Judy! Eventually, I am going to read Fingersmith haha.

And I love how half the team is now in on that smutty BOM ;-))

I just hope that there will be another character somewhere in there that gives us something other than C! Because that's the only letter we get from the main characters/title/author.

Eta: that is, for this week's word anyway. Depends on what the next word will be and when people finish the book.

I really liked Illuminae trilogy too. The way it was structured made it an interesting reading experience. And the audiobooks especially were something I had never experienced before:)

I had the same thought that all of the love drama felt very rushed in the first book and presumably there at least a few more books to go. So, it's not like they had to move that fast😅. Thankfully, overall the characters are all interesting and the love thing is truly a minor gripe for me. There wasn't much of it in there, so it was easy to ignore.

Finished
A Tangle of Gold (The Colours of Madeleine, #3) by Jaclyn Moriarty
which was a great conclusion to the series. Doesn't count for wheelathon though.!

Starting Evil Under the Sun for my suspense book instead (tagged 30 people ; second column of top shelves). It works for E (title), C (Author), O (c: Odell).

I will still read Naked in Death but I may not finish it in the first week which is why I thought I'd do a quick Poirot instead :)

message 222: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments I'm halfway through The Endless Beach already, couldn't sleep on the plane back home, so managed a hefty portion. Unfortunately, it's now 1.47 am here, I can't sleep after sleeping only four hours. The older I get, the worse jet lag seems to hit me.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Tell me about it, Camilla. I absolutely agree about the jet lag. And for me it always hits much worse on the way back, probably because the excitement of the holiday is over.. (very sad face)

Nearly finished my first book for the challenge, which fits a C and an E. City of the Lost (Casey Duncan, #1) by Kelley Armstrong

message 224: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments How are you liking City of the Lost, Lisa? I didn't know Kelley Armstrong writes mysteries as well, I've only read her fantasy series.

I certainly do admire anybody who tackles a jet lag coming from or going to Australia. I've only got 7 hours to manage when going between Finland and the east coast of US.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Camilla wrote: "How are you liking City of the Lost, Lisa? I didn't know Kelley Armstrong writes mysteries as well, I've only read her fantasy series."

Camilla, this is my first Kelley Armstrong. Even though I have been a big paranormal/Urban Fantasy reader in the past for some reason I've not read her before. I'm really enjoying this one, it' s easy to read with fairly concise chapters and the characters aren't too predictable.

message 227: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jun 15, 2019 05:01PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments And yep, pretty much 24 hours minimum in a plane to Europe or East Coast USA from Sydney. We get very good at it, I put my brain into suspended animation and just try to sleep and read for most of it.

message 228: by Emma (M) (new)

Emma (M) | 1777 comments I tend to binge watch movies on the long haul flights, I find reading on the plane difficult for some reason.

We have a flight to Europe coming up next year with our 3 year old, which I’m not looking forward to. We’ve planned an 18 hour stopover in Singapore to break the flight up better for him. Thankfully Singapore has fabulous transit hotels in the airport where you don’t need to pass through customs. We’ll take him to the hotel pool and I believe the airport has a cinema as well. Fingers crossed it will make the flight a bit easier to manage for our son with the big layover

It's all relative, I guess. To us 7 hours is a pretty short flight. We can get to Perth, NZ and some Pacific Islands in that time! That is basically the extent of my travel at the moment with kids. Even to Singapore or Asia is 9 hours+. I think my longest ever flight was 33 hours from start to finish. It was a cheap flight to the East coast of Canada. Russia was also pretty long in total time - close to 30 I think.
It is a special kind of hell. One day we will get the whole "beam me up Scotty" thing down pat!!

Yikes, good luck! At least at 3 they have their own seat and hopefully he will be able to watch some movies and sleep.

Kristel | 287 comments The first questions for the The Upside of Unrequited BOM are up!

So, go and participate! Parcitipation is worth 20 points:) Discussion thread

What counts as participation:
Q: What does it mean "Participating in a BOM" ? Answering a set or comment? Or do we need to answer all days to get the 20 points? Or is a 20 points per set of questions?
A:Provided you add to the discussion at some stage through the book. It doesn't need to be answering a set of questions if that doesn't appeal to you. You may just pop over and give some thoughts at different stages. It is just one set of points per book. However you do need to interact with others in the BOM thread for it to be considered “participation”.

Reading about your flight times just makes my skin crawl haha. I don't mind flying, actually enjoy it, but I've only ever done short flights around Europe and just the thought of sitting in a plane for 6-7 hours is making me very twitchy.

6-7 hours (especially if I could fly on my own) is a dream. haha
That is why we go to Fiji so much. It is only 5 hours (and closer to 4 to get home) which is about as long as I can do with kids right now.
I guess it is all about what you are used to. It just isn't an option for us to get on a train or take a one hour flight to another country

Actually what I meant was a time difference of 7 hours. A direct flight from Helsinki to NYC is about 8 hours. This time we had a chance of planes in Iceland, so it took a bit longer.

A couple of years ago we flew from Helsinki to Singapore via Hongkong (because it was considerably cheaper than a direct flight). I still start sweating when I remember it. Anything under 8 hours is okay.
