Hi William!
Pleased to meet you :-)
I'm a UK vegan who's also a keen reader, and I'm kinda new here too

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello William and Stephanie, I'm also a UK vegan and kinda new here. I have read a lot of books, mainly on animal rights, but too numerous to mention them all here. 🙂

Hi Jessica! Pleased to meet you

I've read two books recently by vegan authors: Look For Me Under The Rainbow by Bernard Jan, a heartbreaking YA novella about a seal pup, and Dale Vince's inspirational memoir, Manifesto.

I look forward to discovering your reading recommendations :-)

Hey William, welcome to VBC! I'm so jealous - I wish my college had had a vegan club!

Hello Jess, welcome! Yes yes yes to Pride and Prejudice, one of my absolute favorites. Really, I love everything by Austen though haha

Kelly PoweredByPlants | 1 comments Happy New Year Everyone

I am New here on goodreads but have been a member of Litsy for a while, I have just celebrated my 4th vegan Christmas in the Uk .

I love to read but Iv not really read any vegan books, in my early vegan days I watched so many animal rights films and documentaries they upset me too much so I stay clear now. I do have a serious vegan cookbook addiction and just get so excited about all the vegan recipes. We’v had a right cook up this Christmas , it’s a shame we can’t add photos 😋
Planning on attempting a vegan brisket today made from vital wheat gluten and a page load of ingredients .... Might take me all day!

Hope you all have a great start to 2021

Hi Kelly!
Pleased to meet you :-)

That brisket sounds a challenge. I love vegan cookery experiments too, but haven't tried anything with wheat gluten. I'm on a Scottish recipe kick at the moment. Lots of warming potato stews!

Hey Kelly - welcome to Vegan Book Club!

How did the brisket go? Vital wheat gluten is one of my essential vegan pantry items. I used it to make fried chicken in the fall, and it was amazing! Unfortunately, I used it all up and forgot to purchase more and didn't realize until a few days before Thanksgiving when I had planned on using it to make a roast. A rookie mistake haha

Brittany Viklund (brittanyviklund) | 1 comments Hello! I’m Brittany, I’ve been fully vegan for almost two years & vegetarian for more than 11 years. I grew up in New Mexico, lived in Oklahoma for 9 years & just moved to Vermont with my husband & 3 young boys— all of whom are also vegan. I love books & vegan food so I love the concept of this book club. Thanks for organizing Tessa! I read We Are The Weather as my first book of 2020 & can’t recommend it to people enough. 🙏 Happy new year!

Hi Brittany! Welcome to Vegan Book Club :) How vegan-friendly is Vermont, out of curiosity?

message 112: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Brittany!
It's great that you're a whole vegan family there. One thing I struggle with is that my partner won't even go vegetarian, let alone vegan. We've been together 17 years and I only went vegan just over 2 years ago, so we have a lot of pre-vegan history I don't want to lose.
Did you all change together or did individual family members convert on different timescales?

message 113: by Pam (new)

Pam Hello! I'm Pamela from Florida. I say I'm a Vegetarian/Pescatarian but sometimes I avoid Dairy as well. Started researching more on nutrition and I want to learn more. I mainly read non-fiction since those are the books I enjoy most!

Su Vida (suvida) | 3 comments Hey guys! I'm not that active here, so I'm not sure if I introduced myself. I'm from Sri Lanka, and I've been a vegan for 7 years now.

I have seen for a while how there's a glaring shortage of vegan characters and themes in fiction, so I took it upon myself to remedy that. After years of development and research, I published my debut novel--a YA sci fi novel called Komoreby, which has a very vegan heroine, and explores vegan themes.

It's currently all free on Wattpad. It has received so much love there that it's a featured novel on the site. I'm hoping this would be adapted to the big screen someday too. So I'd be delighted if you give it a read.

Thanks and I'm super duper glad that this group exists!

Christiona (christiona_darris) | 2 comments Hi! I'm from Missouri. I became a vegetarian in 2007 and have been vegan for about 4.5 years. I have always loved reading and am excited to know that there are books out there with vegan main characters. I can't wait to read them all!

message 118: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Thornton | 9 comments Hi everyone. My name is Rachel and I'm a Brit, but for the past 18+ years, my husband and I have been living in France. I'm a writer and my husband is a glassblower. Our two offspring have sprung off and left the nest, returning to the UK for their university studies. In 2019 I published my first book The Panopticon Experiment, and someone from this group saw it on Twitter and invited me to join in here. I've been horrendously busy recently and haven't managed to contribute any comments or thoughts, so I do apologize. I hope sometime you'll get around to reading it, and hopefully discussing it. Feedback would be brilliant for me as a new(ish) writer. In the meantime, I hope I have more time to read some of the books you've been discussing here. This is a great group, by the way. Well done!

message 121: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 19 comments Hello fellow vegans! I'm Tui and I live in New Zealand which is a small country at the southern edge of the South Pacific. I've been a vegan for over five years and was vegetarian for about 6 years before that.
Keen to find stories with vegan themes. In fact this group has put me onto one straight away. it is the Oryx and Crake book which I just bought and will read. Looking forward to discussing it with you.
I love kayaking and hanging out with the marine wildlife who live near my home. I paddle around the local islands meeting up with them. I make videos of them and write stories about them. I have had some fantastic adventures with the local dolphins and orca and the beautiful rays who are special friends of mine. Dolphins are definitely mind-readers.
My home is in the Bay of Islands in Northland, NZ and is smack bang in the middle of a brand-new Marine Mammal Sanctuary which our government have just opened here a few days ago. It's like a miracle.
I'm an author and will post info about my work in the appropriate folder.

Katie! Hi All! I’m Katie, a first-year uni student in the UK, and I’ve been vegetarian for over 5 years now (since I was 13) and now feel like I’m now stable enough - emotionally and financially - to move towards being vegan! A massive fan of oat milk haha! Excited to be part of this group :)

message 126: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 19 comments Hi, I'm Tui. I live in Jacks Bay in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. It's a fairly remote location, far from shops. I'm vegan of course, for three reasons in this order:
* the environment
* animal ethics
* my own health
I've been vegan for about 7 years and vegetarian before that. The reason environment is top of my list is because the most important thing you can do for any animal is to protect its habitat.
Where I live its all about marine animals. I live among dolphins, whales, rays, sharks and all kinds of fish. I paddle my kayak among them regularly and can sometimes watch dolphins play from my house overlooking the bay. I film them and write about them. I believe dolphins are telepathic and can sometimes read my mind. Here's one example of this that I filmed:

message 128: by Barry (new)

Barry (bobsywoo) | 2 comments Hi there

Not sure how active this group is these days but would like to say hello. I'm Barry, I'm based in the UK and I have been vegan for nearly 28 years with three years veggie before then.

I am a bit of a sucker for vegan cook books (I have bookshelves creaking under the weight!) and like to explore the ethics of veganism. If I am being honest I haven't explored veganism in fiction to much but I did enjoy The Animals in That Country a few years ago.

My favourite non-fiction books about veganism are From Dusk 'Til Dawn: An Insider's View of the Growth of the Animal Liberation Movement and Animal Liberation - when I first read the latter it really helped me with me getting to grips with the ethics.

message 129: by Isabella (new)

Isabella La Rocca González | 2 comments Hi Barry,

Welcome. i'm new here, too. i've been vegan 16 years and veggie many years before that.

my favorite animal liberation books are Igniting a Revolution and various books about vegan ecofeminism.

My book of photographs, research, and creative nonfiction regarding the hidden reality of farming animals, Censored Landscapes is due to be published in the fall of 2024.

i'm hoping this forum becomes more active!

message 130: by Barry (new)

Barry (bobsywoo) | 2 comments Hi Isabella, I think I would appreciate that 'Igniting a Revolution' book and also your own work about the plight of farmed animals.

Nice to say hello to you!

I think our relationship to animals often mirrors our human relationships to gender and race and in my mind I can't separate my awareness of humans dominion over animals and how humans do that to each other.

message 131: by Isabella (new)

Isabella La Rocca González | 2 comments totally agree, Barry. that is why i pursued this project. my aim was to illustrate the connections all those issues: animals, environment (climate change, etc), workers, workers, gender, race, and other hierarchies, human health.

great to make your acquaintance!

message 132: by walkabout (new)

walkabout | 1 comments Hello, fervent reader and long time vegan activist here based in Europe. i enjoy essays (The sexual politics of meat) and novels (Cadáver exquisito). I try to read in the original language as much as possible (if that language is available to me).

Never stop learning, never stop fighting.
