Nico Chan | 2 comments I read it a few years back, possibly 2010 - 2015? The illustrations were quite realistic and the tone was serious overall. I remember there being bear & tiger chapters. The main character is mostly concerned with why he can't change into an animal & feels there's something wrong with him.

(spoiler)

the boy turns into a whale at the end of the book on a cliff or something while cornered by the bad guys

Edit: I found it!! It was driving me insane so I went digging and found a photocopy of an illustration I made from the library book years back, reverse image-searched that on 3 different sites before I got a match. Bless up 2 the one random hungarian site who posted pics of the book, im off to re-read it now

Bonnie | 291 comments I know Kit and Nita change into Whales in Diane Duane's Young Wizards series. I don't remember much else since it's been so long since I read it.

Nico Chan | 2 comments Thanks, but the main character was definitely male, and wasn't part of a series + had a more mature tone (the drawings were all black & white).

I remember vaguely that each chapter started with a drawing of an animal that corresponded to an animal/human that appeared in the chapter, but I can't remember the main plot details, arrrrgh

That's a pretty amazing way to find a book.
