Riding the Highways: Natchez Trace Parkway

This road trip is a doozy and takes us through 3 states.

The Natchez Trace Parkway is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the US. It’s been designated as a National Scenic Byway and is one of 31 byways to be named an All American Road. Join us as we travel more than 500 miles through Mississippi, a small portion of Alabama to Tennessee. This road follows the 8,000 year old Natchez Trace that has been walked by Native Americans, soldiers, and pioneers.

Here's how it work:
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

1. Natchez Trace Parkway Starting Point: Natchez
Our trip begins in Mississippi in the lovely historic city of Natchez. We visit the National Historical Visitor Center to explore the city's complex history which includes local Native Americans, European settlement, African enslavement, the American cotton economy, and the Civil Rights movement.
We then take a tour of three beautiful mansions from the 1850’s that hold a wealth of history of their own: Longwood, Rosalie Mansion and Stanton Hall.

2. Drive 10 Miles from Natchez to the Emerald Mound
We jump on the NTP (Natchez Trace Parkway) and head northeast through rolling hills to Emerald Mound, the second largest Native American ceremonial mound in the US. Built over 700 years ago, this 35 ft mound covers 8 acres and measures 770 ft by 435 ft at its base. Archeologists believe the mounds were the setting for civic processions, ceremonial dances, and solemn religious rituals. They provide a glimpse into the story of the people who lived along the Natchez Trace.

3. Drive 5 Miles from Emerald Mound to Mount Locust
Mount Locust Inn & Plantation is our next stop and one of the most significant historic sites in the South. Constructed in 1780, this home is one of the oldest structures in Mississippi. It functioned as both a working plantation and inn where travelers could rest for the night. It is the only surviving inn
of more than 50 that existed on the Old Natchez Trace. Today, visitors can take walking paths to view the house and grounds, which include a brick kiln and both family and slave cemeteries.

4. Drive 25 Miles from Mount Locust to Windsor Ruins
We take a quiet country back road to Windsor Ruins,
the haunting skeleton of what was once the most impressive antebellum home in Mississippi. Built in 1861 at the then staggering cost of $175K, it served as an observation post and later as a hospital during the Civil War, thus sparing it from destruction. Ironically, having survived the war, it burned to the ground in 1890, when
a guest left a lighted cigar on the upper balcony. Everything was destroyed except 23 of the columns, balustrades and iron stairs.

5. Drive 29 Miles from Windsor Ruins to Sunken Trace
Sunken Trace gives you an iconic picture from the Natchez Trace. Just a short five minute walk sends you back in time over 200 years allowing you to walk where thousands have gone before you. All these travelers on the path eroded the soil making it appear sunken.

6. Drive 13 Miles from Sunken Trace to Rocky Springs
A half mile trail takes you to the abandoned ghost town of Rocky Springs. Once a thriving community settled in the late 1790’s, it was a popular watering place for travelers and took its name from the nearby natural spring. Yellow Fever, destructive crop insects and poor land management brought an end to this once prosperous rural community. Today, the church and cemetery is all
that is left, leaving evidence of some of the residents of the town.

7. Drive 23 Miles from Rocky Springs to the Battle of Raymond
This is the historic site where the Battle of Raymond was fought in 1863. Union General Ulysses Grant's mission, the Vicksburg Campaign hoped to take hold of one of the last Confederate strongholds on the Mississippi River. The small yet bitter battle had a huge impact on the outcome of the war, giving the Union complete control of the Mississippi River, hastening the Confederate surrender.

8. Drive 11 Miles from Battle of Raymond to Clinton
Designated as a Mississippi Main Street City, Clinton is full of history and charm. Begin your visit at the Clinton Historic District Museum for a wonderful display showing the history of the Natchez Trace in the Clinton area. Then take the historic walking tour of Old Town which takes you down some of its historic brick covered streets past historic churches, old homes and Mississippi’s first college.

9. Drive 15 Miles from Clinton to the Jackson
Our next stop is Jackson, the state’s capital and largest city. The rich heritage of the city makes it a top destination for history lovers. The statewide Freedom Trail runs through the city, encompassing a number of historic sites that were significant in the civil rights movement. Visit the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum to hear the powerful stories that help you understand this crucial time in history. And don’t miss the Sports Hall of Fame, one of the best baseball museums in the country.

10. Drive 14 Miles from Jackson to the Ross Barnett Reservoir Overlook
Reservoir Overlook offers spectacular views of the Ross Barnett Reservoir. The lake features 105 miles of shoreline by a 3.5 mile dam and spillway. The western shore is bounded by the NTP and it is a popular place for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. Nearby is the renowned Mississippi Craft Center which features treasures from over 400 artisans from 19 different states. It’s an awesome place that often allows you to see several artists in action.

11. Drive 21 Miles from Reservoir Overlook to Cypress Swamp
Mississippi is full of natural wonders, and among those wonders is Cypress Swamp which is filled with trees dating back
more than 1,000 years. The boardwalk trail is a great opportunity to see these unique trees. The swamps also provide the perfect habitat for a variety of wildlife so allow plenty of time for an alligator sighting.

12. Drive 39 Miles from Cypress Swamp to the Kosciusko
The charming little town of Kosciusko is the birthplace of Oprah Winfrey and a great place to spend the night while on the Trace. Stop first at the Visitor’s Center where you can learn about the town’s history and the Revolutionary War-era Polish freedom fighter it was named for. The town offer’s a picturesque downtown square, restaurants and the well-reviewed Maple Terrace Inn, a historic bed and breakfast filled with antiques and atmosphere.

13. Drive 20 Miles from Kosciusko to French Camp
The quaint log cabin village of French Camp helps you discover how early American life used to be. The village includes the restored 1840 Drake Log Cabin which was built using a water powered saw, the LeFlore Carriage house, a black smith shop, pottery shop and bakery. You can also inspect an old sorghum mill where a favorite Southern treat, molasses is made.

14. Drive 13 Miles from French Camp to the Jeff Busby Overlook
The NTP soon arrives at one of its highest points - Little Mountain Overlook at Jeff Busby Site. Named for the congressman who played a key role in the preservation of the trace, this recreational area offers camping, picnicking and a very nice nature trail which identifies the various native plants. At milepost 203 you will find a roadside exhibit called The Pigeon Roost, marking the spot where millions of the now extinct migrating passenger pigeons once rested.

15. Drive 42 Miles from Jeff Busby Overlook to the Tombigbee National Forest
Tombigbee National Forest is home to Davis Lake a popular place to camp and enjoy the gorgeous countryside. It also has a couple mound sites worth visiting. The Bynum Mounds includes a display portraying the daily life and history of the Chickasaw Village that once stood there. Be sure to check out the Witch Dance stop, legendary for its paranormal activity. Legend has it that the bare, scorched patches in the grasses here were caused by the dances of witches.

16. Drive 30 Miles from Tombigbee National Forest to Tupelo
Home to the King, we stop in Tupelo to visit the
two-room birthplace of Elvis Presley. Then we head to the nearby Tupelo Automobile Museum with its impressive collection of cars that track the history of automobile design. Those interested in the Civil War may enjoy Tupelo National Battlefield and Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield located just outside of town.

17. Drive 9 Miles from Tupelo to the Confederate Gravesites
During the battles of the Civil War, deceased soldiers were often buried where they fell. The silent monuments of these 13 unknown soldiers who lie beneath the shady woods of the trace are a mystery. There were no battles that took place in the immediate vicinity so no one knows who they are, how they died, why they are buried here, or who buried them. Perhaps this is why these graves are so sad.

18. Drive 18 Miles from Confederate Gravesites to Pharr Mounds
Here you will find the largest and most important archaeological site in northern Mississippi. It consists of eight large domed shaped burial mounds dating to before 200 AD, scattered over an area of 90 acres. Together, they make up one of the largest Middle Woodland ceremonial sites in the southeast. Interpretive waysides are available to explain the findings from the area.

19. Drive 17 Miles from Pharr Mounds to Tishomingo State Park
The parkway runs right through Tishomingo State Park which is actually the westernmost extension of the Appalachian Mountains. The park includes 13 miles of trails with waterfalls, scenic views of sandstone cliffs, towering rocky ridges and a swinging bridge built in the 1930s. It is also known for its 8 mile canoe trip they offer along Bear Creek.

20. Drive 26 Miles from Tishomingo State Park to Colbert Ferry
We cross the state line into Alabama for just 33 miles. Crossing the John Coffee Memorial Bridge over the Tennessee River we arrive at Colbert’s Ferry where an inn and ferry operated in the early 1800’s long before the bridge was built. The owner is said to have charged $75,000 to transport Andrew Jackson and his army across the river! Today you can enjoy the picnic area overlooking the river without being charged a dime.

21. Drive 12 Miles from Colbert Ferry to the Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall
Our next stop is commonly referred to as “TeLahNay’s Wall”. It is the largest unmortared wall in the US and has cemented its place in local history for both its stature and sentimental meaning. Tom Hendrix spent over three decades building the wall in honor of his Yuchi ancestor who was kicked off her northern Alabama homeland and relocated to Oklahoma. The mile-long wall winds through the woods, rising and falling to reflect the ups and downs of TeLayNay’s journey home.

22. Drive 48 Miles from Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall to Meriwether Lewis Monument
Leaving Alabama, our first stop in Tennessee is the Meriwether Lewis Monument commemorating the life of the famous explorer. A monument was erected over the grave site featuring an unadorned column with a broken top, signifying the adventurer’s sudden death at the young age of 35. The base displays a quote from Thomas Jefferson celebrating Lewis’ courage. You can learn more about his life through interpretive displays in a log cabin that sits near the site of the stand Lewis was staying the night before his death.

23. Drive 5 Miles from Meriwether Lewis Monument to Fall Hollow Trail
Our next two stops are for all those interested in waterfalls. At the Fall Hollow Trail, a path and a set of wooden bridges take you across several small creeks before they begin their tumbling descent. The easy part of the path ends at an observation deck where you can look down at the largest waterfall. The path continues, becoming a little more difficult, but those who persevere will be rewarded with more small but lovely cascades.

24. Drive 13 Miles from Fall Hollow Trail to Jackson Falls
The short trail at this stop takes you to views of Jackson Falls. It is one of the most popular walks along the parkway. After dropping 900 feet in elevation on a paved trail, you will find yourself at a clear pool in a small gorge at the foot of the beautiful falls. Unfortunately, your return trip is a bit more strenuous, but definitely worth the effort.

25. Drive 1 Mile from Jackson Falls to Baker Bluff Overlook
Baker Bluff Overlook offers one of the best scenic views along the entire Natchez Trace Parkway. The gorgeous valley below is filled with farmland, cattle and barns and changes color with each new season. Don't be surprised to see photographers setting up tripods to get the best shots. The view is to the east so try to hit it in the afternoon and early evening for the best viewing time as the sun will be at your back.

26. Drive 2 Miles from Baker Bluff Overlook to Gordon House Historic Site
The brick home of Captain John Gordon was built in 1818 and is one of the more impressive homes in the area. It was a landmark for travelers of the Old Trace, letting them know that they would soon be in Nashville where simple human comforts could be found after weeks of walking the rustic trail. Gordon's ferry business was a welcome way to safely cross the Duck River. Today, you can walk the grounds and see where his ferry would have taken them across the river.

27. Drive 31 Miles from Gordon House Historic Site to Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge
This often-photographed double arch bridge is an iconic image of the parkway. In 1995 it received the Presidential Award for Design Excellence and offers a 155-foot-tall view of a lush, green valley with rolling hills. There are two opportunities to stop and view the bridge and both are well worth the stop.

28. Drive 22 Miles from Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge to Nashville
We have completed our NTP road trip and have arrived in Nashville, the state’s capital known as America’s Music City and home to country music. Celebrate the end of your trip by having fun listening to live music and eating great food. Learn about the city's music history by visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the historic Ryman and Grand Ole Opry House.
