Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments How does Goodreads decide when a book is officially released? Does a book need an ISBN # to be an official release? Does it need to be on a vendor site for sale with a given release date?

Emily | 17503 comments Publishers and authors generally announce release dates. They can and do change. It does not have to be announced on a website or be for sale to put it on a record. Records do not have to have ISBNs first.
Sometimes if the future date is not known, people will put just the year or the approximate month and year.

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments How does Goodreads define release date? What if I want to challenge the official release date?

On a book you wrote? We would probably take your word for it, absent strong evidence to the contrary. On anyone else's book? We would ask for more details, like why you believed the author/publisher to be incorrect.

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments Yes on my book. The release date was put on Goodreads since an advanced reader gave it a rating. My book will officially release June 29th on Saturday. An early version was placed on Inkitt for some feedback. It is not there now. The story has evolved much since then. Therefore, it is not the same story. And should I be punished for wanting some advance reader or 'beta' reader feedback?

That would meet Goodreads standards for a published edition that is now out pf print. Certainly we can add a new edition with release date of July 29, 2019 (which I have done: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...), but it will be combined in a single work with the older edition (https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...).

As the author, you have the ability to change which edition of the book is the default, which will come up in searches by title and show on your author profile. Here's how: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/3...

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments It was never in print and no one warns you of these consequences. Now there will only be confusion. What am I supposed to do with this? And if you have a digital copy on Amazon and one on Kobo and one on Apple, does this mean all these digital editions are different? Or do they stand simply as the digital edition?

Combining it is fine I guess, but you can see how major negative issues will result for the crime of wanting feedback. Funny how other authors put up a 100 advance reader giveaway copies months prior to official release and that is okay.

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments Your link does not work. It says connection is not private and I can't see what you wanted me to see. And if I combine editions, what are the consequences? It won't even let me change the crappy generic cover to my cover. It threatens to once again force a new edition on me.

I'm sorry. Which one?

The editions are already combined. No need to create a new one or create anything.

message 10: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments And what about the second one with the generic cover? So asking this question ends up causing me more harm than good.

message 11: by Emily (last edited Jun 27, 2019 08:34AM) (new)

Emily | 17503 comments When the new cover is added to the final edition, people will realize that is their edition, instead of the other one, and they will shelve the correct one. You can add it now or we can add it for you if you like.

message 12: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments I tried doing that. It warned me if I changed from the generic to my cover, it would change editions. No one warns you of consequences. They leave out little important details that screw you later. And if they are really combined why do I see two? And no, people will be confused.

message 13: by Emily (last edited Jun 27, 2019 08:44AM) (new)

Emily | 17503 comments I meant you can add it to the blank one. That's what I meant when people will see the cover of the book they own.

Emily | 17503 comments Since that link wasn't working for you about setting the default edition, here are the instructions:
Navigate to the book's page. Be sure you have selected the edition you wish to become the default, or primary edition.
Click edit details below the book's description.
On the right side of the page, click Set this book as the primary edition for this work. It's about midway down the page.

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments What I don't want is the ugly generic cover.

message 16: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (nocturnal777) | 17 comments It will not let me add my cover. The ugly generic cover remains.

If you need help adding the cover to the edition just added, you can post it in your profile pictures and we can get it from there.
