I propose we read A Farewell to Arms, one of Ernest Hemingway's finest novels published when the author was at the height of his powers in 1929
It draws his own experiences serving the Italians in WWI. This is a vivid portrait of men at war and their deeper responses to cruelty & the heroism of battle.

A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield - the weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote his ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right.

“There is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly; sometimes it's like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges.” Ernest Hemingway, born on this day in 1899

Catherine Habbie | 1912 comments An excellent description of the war.
One experiences the world war first hand through the series of 5 books. The pangs of separation between the lovers is described very succinctly too. He starts with 'This was like a game of bridge,in which you said things, intead of playing cards.'
Although it's not an autobiography, it seems reminiscent of Hemingways own experiences at war, except that he got the girl this time. (view spoiler)

Paullett Golden (paullettgolden) | 43 comments I haven't read Farewell since my early college days. I'm a little late to the convo, but I'm about to dig in for a late-August read! I'm excited to re-read it and see how it compares to my memory of it.

Paullett Golden (paullettgolden) | 43 comments That satisfying moment when you assign your class to read the book so that you have your own personal book club to discuss the piece. Bahahaha.
