L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 22 comments Unfortunately, I was not nearly as enthralled with this book as many others have been. I felt the story overall was much "sadder" than I had expected it to be. The only thing that saved it for me in that aspect was the ending. Though the ending also didn't feel possible to me. I found it almost impossible to "suspend my disbelief" at the end as I followed the action. Not sure I will read more of Semple's writing... I realize I am in the minority, but that's okay! :) I'm always glad others appreciate and love books that I don't feel the same about. I like authors to succeed in pleasing readers and no one author or book will ever please every single reader! :)

Margitte | 4 comments I just loved this novel. Here is my review from way back.

The author did a great send-up of our hang-ups. The absurdity of the different scenarios just had me in fits of giggles throughout the book, but I realize it is not for everyone. I love humor and satire. Stand-up comedy floats my boat. This kind of book is a second favorite past time. Sometimes we just have to get over ourselves and be reminded to get on with it. 🤓🤓💐💐

Bella Dean | 1 comments I had a very love hate relationship with this book. I loved Bernadette I could relate to her so much. But I ended up hating some of the choices she made but I think it’s a very realistic very On life. We aren’t always going to make the best choices in tough or pressuring situations. I hated how her husband that seemed like a good person turned out to be just horrid. How could he just move on from Bernadette so quickly ? He just decided he was done with her and bam got someone pregnant ... didn’t even love her. Wasn’t thinking that his actions could have consequences. I think this book was very coming of age book not just for Bernadette but for her daughter, for the neighbor. Bernadette never moved on from what had happened to her and through out this book she was able to move on grow and become the person she knew she was. Her daughter was able to grow able to learn from Bernadette mistakes but also how to love more and support more. The neighbor becoming Bernadette alliance in the end I thought was just perfect. Would recommend this book to a friend.

Kashisha (kashisha_) | 3 comments I liked this book. Loved the satire. I definitely didn't like the way Bernadette's husband turned out. I was mentally screaming at him to stop his dalliance with Soo-Lin. Breathed a sigh of relief when it turned out to be just a one night stand gone wrong!
Bernadette made some wrong choices but considering how closed up she was cause by not following her passion, it was expected.
All in all, it was a nice read and I thoroughly enjoyed it

Elia | 1 comments I loved this book immensely. I very seldom write reviews or comments but this book was well written, held my attention and accomplished what good fiction is supposed to do which is to suspend reality and let you go to other worlds. You can dislike some characters, like others, even like and dislike the same character as the story progresses which is how I felt about Bernadette.

All in all it was a different story from the usual plots I read and I was enthralled. I’m very discriminating about the books I recommend to my brother and this was one of them. He loved it. I also recommended it to my daughter who then wanted to book a trip to Antarctica, lol.
I don’t intend to see the movie.
