There were a few children that were at a facility/institution of a sort as the world was sliding into a dystopia. These several children were seperated from others (I think). The began to figure out what their own powers were. Each of the children was different both ethnically and age. The narrator was a teenage girl (if I remember correctly). There was a little black boy who didn't speak until the very end.
I have a very specific memory that they were able to tap into the consciousness of an ant colony and they all stopped eating meat after they could tap into the feelings of animals. The climax came when they could find other children around the world who had similar powers. This is much less a super powers book and much more mutanty and about "special" kids.
I read it around late 90s/early 200s
