What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this in some sort of short story collection in the early 1990s, although it's likely the book was much older than that. The story is about a child that discovers some of their toys can move on their own, which is revealed to be because of a controlling alien intelligence that can "possess" objects and move them around. Child and alien become friends, some incidents occur, and at the end of the book the alien takes control of a runaway car to stop it running over the protagonist. However the alien concludes that because it saved the child's life, that life now belongs to it, so it takes over their body. The story ends with the protagonist's realisation that they are now trapped inside their own puppeteered body, able to witness what is going on but not act.
