Liz (liz_the_librarian) It's nearly time for me to start planning for next year's challenge, and I need your help!

This year I chose a variety of different genres for the mini-challenges, but would like to mix it up next year.

Leave your suggestions here for how I can make this program even better next year!

Pattie Babbitt I really enjoyed the genre challenges. I think it is really good to get people to step out of their normal reading habits and explore new things. Here are a few suggestions for topics for the challenges other than genres.
*Pick a current New York Times Best Seller
*Pulitzer Prize winner
*Oprah book club selection
*The longest book you can find that still sounds good (followed by a challenge for best book under 200 pages!)
*Banned Books
*You could be silly and just say something like "pick a purple book."
*Dewey ranges in NF
*Make someone else in your life choose your book

I'm sure I could come up with more, but my kiddos are currently whining! :)

Liz (liz_the_librarian) Thanks, Pattie! These are all really great suggestions. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them make it into next year's challenge...

Everyone else, feel free to leave your suggestions here.

Amanda Inkenbrandt (amandagayle726) | 4 comments Virginia Beach Public Library had "summer reading bingo" this year. Some of their bingo squares would be really great mini-challenges, I think. There were a lot of good ones, but I think my favorite was "revisit a childhood favorite."

I have to agree with Pattie. I really enjoy the genre challenges - even though I try to combine them with a mystery ;-).

Some of my suggestions are:
Read a YA book
Read a book from a series
Read a popular nonfiction book

Liz (liz_the_librarian) Thanks to everyone who provided suggestions. Here is the list I am working with now:

-Read a book with a purple cover.
-Have someone you are close to choose your next book.
-Read a book that has won a notable award.
-Read Fahrenheit 451 in March for 7 Cities: 1 Book.
-Revisit a childhood favorite.
-Read a book that takes place in the distant future.
-Read a book about Native Americans.
-Read a mystery.
-Read a romance.
-Read a book featuring a LBGTQ character.
-Choose a book based solely on the cover art.
-Read a book that takes place on a continent other than North America.
-Read a humor book.
-Read a book by an author you've never heard of.
-Read a book featuring zombies.
-Read a book that involves a long journey.
-Read a book with a one-word title.

Feel free to make more suggestions or vote on the ones above that you like. Thanks!
