46. Do you dog-ear your books?

message 152: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 381 comments No I don’t. I can usually find something laying around to use as a bookmark (and not a taco).

message 153: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Absolutely not.

message 154: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments No! I use a bookmark or any scrap of paper...grocery receipt, envelope. I have even used kleenex. No tacos here either.

48. Do you annotate your books? (Write notes in the margins, highlight your favorite quotes/passages/parts)

message 157: by Debra Diggs (last edited Sep 26, 2019 09:01AM) (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments I have annotated books before. But not anymore. If I decide to sell on Amazon the marks decrease the value. Also, most of my books are library books now. I do keep a notebook that I make notes in for different books.

For books that you are going to keep, I agree with writing in books. It is a good way to interact with a book. ....Also interesting to go back years later and see what you marked.

message 158: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 381 comments When I was younger, I never would have written in a book, but now if it’s a book I’m keeping it passing along to friends, I most certainly would annotate.

49. What makes you love a book?

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Krystyna wrote: "47. Do you break/crack the spine of your books?"

The goal is to keep the spine in pristine condition. Sometimes it just doesn't work.

If it's not a library book I will annotate. Sometimes I just put sticky notes and other times I will write/highlight in them.

The book needs to be interesting! It needs to have decent writing, and the ending has to satisfy me. I think it all differs depending on the genre.

50. What will inspire you to recommend a book?

message 164: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Great writing and unique story/well thought out story. Usually if a book has bad writing I won't recommend it, even if it is a good story.

55. What was the last book you read that was out of your comfort zone?

message 180: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Animal Farm by George Orwell. I never read it in school, and I didn't have any expectations going into it. It was weird but good.

message 181: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski. It was a collection of short stories, which I never read. It turned out to be just okay.

60. What book have you read in which the hype ruined your reading experience?

message 192: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

It's still being hyped and I don't understand why. It was good fiction writing but nothing blew me away.

61. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews on a book you’ve read?

message 194: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I try not to write terrible reviews because the book ultimately works for someone. I will be honest though. It doesn't happen often, thankfully.

message 195: by Debra Diggs (last edited Oct 16, 2019 10:44AM) (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments No problem giving bad reviews. I treat reviews as my opinion and whether I recommend a book or not. Potential readers should know if the book is awful.

Another part of bad reviews is if the book has animal or child abuse or bad/gratuitous language, potential readers should know this.

I appreciate reviews that point out serious flaws in a book.

Note: Many people treat book reviews differently. Some do more of a book summary then a review. Some do not give their opinion. I do not know the correct way. I just do my way - opinion.

message 196: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 381 comments If a book is really terrible I would not have a problem leaving an honest review. I feel it’s important to be honest even if it’s an opinion. One thing that irks me is bad grammar or no punctuation.

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 381 comments Krystyna wrote: "58. Favorite book-to-movie adaptation (or TV show)?"
