Kelsey | 1 comments SO:

I'm starting to write my first novel. (I know, I know, aren't we all?) Based on the themes/plot, I think it will fit best in the NA sector, maybe under paranormal/romance/adventure. Admitting that label scares me, because even I cringe when I type it out despite the fact that I tend to enjoy that genre. The last thing I want is for my story to fail to connect with people by inadvertently using cheesy, over-done scenarios and descriptions.

Please help me avoid falling victim to these errors by telling me: What tropes, cliches, characterizations, descriptions etc. do you HATE in your YA/NA books? What do you come across that completely undermines an otherwise good book?

I'll start: Infuriating love triangles that make no sense.

What bothers you?

Vicky | 2 comments Love triangles are the worst, but reverse harem is acceptable for me.
Cheating and sex with other partners is a huge no for all my friends. Again reverse harem might be the exception but I need the harem to be totally in love with the heroine, they shouldn't even turn to look at other women.
Slutshaming and girl on girl hate is overdone
Virgin heroines paired to Manwhores are so cliche. I like that trope sometimes others I hate it. I think Alexa Riley's books work because it's always a virgin hero and a virgin heroine.
I hate when there's no sex. I need the sex to be at least in the first 60% of the book. I hate separations for stupid reasons. A well-done separation works for me, but if the separation is because someone did something stupid like cheating I hate it.
I love enemies to lovers, dark men, alpha heroes, sex, insta atraction. Many people hate insta-love but not me.
