On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.
As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.
25%(view spoiler)[ I'm not sure if I have ever read a true crime novel before. However, if they are similar to this then it might not be the genre for me. I'm finding it difficult to pay attention during the large paragraphs that are mainly just filled with descriptions. The crime itself is interesting, but there's a lot of stuff that I am not sure was necessary to add in. (hide spoiler)]
50%(view spoiler)[ This book keeps going back and forth between being interesting and being boring for me. There are parts where I have such trouble keeping focus, and other parts that I am really interested in the new developments in the case. I wish all of the book could hold my attention instead of just every other chapter. (hide spoiler)]
75%(view spoiler)[ I am glad that Perry and Dick finally got caught and arrested. I am preventing myself from Googling this case because I don't want to spoil what happens. I really hope that it is as easy as being Perry and Dick. They aren't good people and it would be nice to see this case close. So quickly after it happened too. (hide spoiler)]
100%(view spoiler)[ My opinion is on the line for this book. There were definitely parts that really caught my attention, but other times it felt like there was unnecessary detail added to elongate the story. Those parts were difficult to get through because it felt like they dragged on. Overall, it was an interesting read even though the case was rather cut and dry (that's a good thing in real life). It is kind of scary to think about how this family got murdered by complete strangers just because they were fed some misinformation. 3/5 stars. (hide spoiler)]
