Matthew Kitson | 19 comments I found myself really intrigued by Cal's arc, from being indifferent or annoyed by him to quickly becoming invested in him, and actually being able to see a lot of myself in him.

That had me thinking, has there ever been a character that you were initially down on but then quickly became interested in them?

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments This will be obvious to anyone who read certain threads re. The Calculating Stars and The Fated Sky but Parker, 100%. At first I just thought 'oh, he's a jerk, shrug' and then I thought 'I really hate him', and then I called him unrepeatable bad things and then I realised I was pretty much obsessed! It's not the same as you describe with Cal because I never saw anything of myself in Parker - I don't even really like him - but I respected him by the end of the second book and I found his character so interesting, which I didn't expect when he first showed up.

Totally! She was in City of Dragons too. I just finished it today. Anne Flosnick’s voice is so annoying. Ha!

Ruth | 1779 comments Yes. Malta. Parker. Both of these.

And, kind of a cliche at this point, but Sansa Stark.

See, her I liked from the beginning. She was dreaming she was a beautiful princess and that a handsome prince would carry her off to bright new lands. I never really understood the hatred towards her. Sure, she could be bratty and did stupid things, but she was a naive girl acting the way she thought she was supposed to. Easily forgivable.

Iain Bertram (iain_bertram) | 1740 comments Cal was only unlikeable because we saw him through the protagonists eyes. Okay, he is an anal retentive perfectionist, just the person you want organising a detailed space mission.. whatever it takes to look after his crew.. admirable
