Blue | 825 comments Hi,
I have been trying to find a specific edition of The Wizard of Oz for several years now.

I had it as a child. It was the full story but with gorgeous illustrations. I think it was published in the 70s or 80s as I had it in the early 90s.

The cover was an orange brown and Dorothy and the others were on the cover. And I believe Dorothy's dress was grey checks.

I have had no luck searching on Google or even here myself as some editions don't have covers.

It was a hard back book probably 12 inches wide by say 13 inches high if that helps any.

Thanks in advance.

Ann | 530 comments When you said gorgeous illustrations, I immediately thought of the illustrations by Greg Hildebrandt. There are multiple editions done by him, so I can't comment on the color of the book cover.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

Can you confirm if Greg Hildebrandt is the illustrator?

Amanda (misterfive) | 215 comments The DelRay paperback version published in 79 is illustrated by W W Denslow. The cover has a very orange feel to it. I don't know if it was ever printed in hardback, though.

Del Ray is North American. This was most likely printed in England sorry forgot to mention that.

Blue | 825 comments If it helps I remember one of the illustrations was the Witch of the South I think. She was in a red room and everything was ruby and there were giant spiders.

Amanda (misterfive) | 215 comments There's a version published in the 1960s by J.M. Dent & Sons in London that is illustrated by B. Biro. The cover of the hardback is mostly red.

Aerulan | 1316 comments Maybe check out editions illustrated by Charles Santore?
Here's a link to a scan of a page I pulled up from an image search

Does that art style look right?

message 18: by Blue (new)

Blue | 825 comments That looks somewhat familiar.

Not sure if he did the book I am thinking of or if I saw another edition with it in.

that was suggested before. It looks sort of similar but it is not the correct book. I managed to get a copy of that and looked through it.
