Our runner-up for August is Adam Nevill's Last Days!
Please use spoiler tags so everyone can read and comment at their own pace!

Enjoy!

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments Excited about this one, since I actually have it.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) Yes, me too, so I'm going to try and find time to fit it in!

Rachel Bea (gekrepten) | 1761 comments Really excited to read this. I loved everything I've read by him so far, so I hope this will be no exception. I put the ebook on hold at the library, hopefully I can start it soon.

I think--besides his short stories--that this is my favorite book by Nevill, to date!!

Harpies in the Trees (harpies_in_the_trees) | 5 comments Excited to read this. Waiting on book depository !

i loved this one! Hope everyone enjoys it.

Kari | 70 comments About a hundred pages in and it's very readable so far although I'm weirdly thrown off by all of the descriptions of characters' physical appearances being kind of mean-spirited? Lol. I haven't quite gotten to a lot of horror yet but I'm liking the mystery of what might actually be going on in this cult.

Ryan Bassette | 9 comments 50 pages in and I'm certainly intrigued; well-written up to this point. Not sure how I feel about the first few pages dispelling any possibility that this is NOT going to be of a paranormal nature (however, having stated that, I realize I may not have read those introductory pages as closely as I might/should have).

We shall see.

Renata Riva | 7 comments I'm one-third through and, so far, I like it very much.

I'm getting fond of most of the characters: I hope this is not one of those horror books where everyone (or nearly everyone) dies in the end.

I liked the book a bunch, but I felt the second half just drew out the drama/suspense too much like it was done just for the sake of drawing it out.

D Dyer | 88 comments I really enjoyed this and actually appreciated the somewhat slower but not too slow pacing though I do tend to agree that we could have sped up the pacing in the second half of the book without losing any of the impact. And I really like how the idea of possession was handled in this book.

Renata Riva | 7 comments I agree with the general feeling that the first half of the book is better than the second.

There were some truly scary moments, though, and I really enjoyed this novel.

Suki St Charles (goodreadscomsuki_stcharles) | 40 comments I read this last year and I've forgotten some of the details, but I remember being seriously creeped out. I enjoyed the slower pace. I liked the book a lot, and I've saved my copy because I want to reread it in a year or two, once I've forgotten more of it and can enjoy the creep-out all over again. :-)

Chandler | 254 comments Just finished it. The ending was over-the-top but I enjoyed. I agree that the first half was better than the second half. I still give it a gold star for creativity and creepiness. This was the first novel I've read of Levine's and I definitely would like to read more :)

Harpies in the Trees (harpies_in_the_trees) | 5 comments 300 pages in and I really enjoy the storytelling and the interview passages, that may be tedious to some but I felt like it worked here. I really enjoy the relationship between and Kyle and Dan, it adds some lightness. I feel that I'm on this tour of terror with them so it's pretty fun...so far =)

message 19: by Ryan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ryan Bassette | 9 comments I (barring the few pages of prelude that essentially give away a large chunk of what could have been left to be revealed later) found the first third to be fairly creepy and holding a great deal of promise; things unraveled by midway, and it became clear that this was going to be more of an action/hollywood adventure type of ride, rather than a truly frightening simmer to a boil (which is my personal bias, full disclosure).

I have a a couple pet peeves that some will argue are nitpicking, but on at least two occasions the author has the Arizona sheriff using British slang (references his 'torch' and a 'power cut') which simply doesn't ring true, and likely just an oversight by the author. An additional irritation was the author's banging away, ad nauseum, on the description of the odor associated with the creatures. I get what he was trying to convey, but it got tedious at some point (fairly early). I guess you could say he did this throughout more generally as well...almost an exercise in description.

So, to sum up: promising premise, execution and development disappointing. An entertaining read that kept me interested, but not a classic of the genre; feel a bit like he gave in to the public's obsession right now with the 'in your face' ism a la Walking Dead etc, rather than playing it more subtle.
